About Kris Shellabarger

We love our log cabin on the lake so much that we built another one to share with others. We spend much of the summer boating, fishing and swimming during the day and sitting around the fire at night. We also love to check out the local farmer's markets and wineries and sometimes hit the antique stores. In the winter, it is so cozy and we love to hike and catch up on a good book.

Kris Shellabarger purchased this cabin in 2013

Why Kris Shellabarger chose Goreville

Lake living is what we love and after we built our log cabin, we wanted to build another smaller version to share with others. We built this across the street from the lake, but still with a dock and lake access.

What makes this cabin unique

Peaceful, charming, warm and a great place to relax after a day of hiking, biking, boating, fishing or antiquing! Cozy fireplace for cooler evenings and winter retreats! We have a tiny cabin across the street if you need more room. It is located right on the lake with an outdoor shower!

Quaint and cozy, but with enough space for the whole family!

  • 5 of 5

I planned a birthday trip for my husband and we invited our 2 brothers and my friend, not to mention our great pyrenees Duke. I was 6 months pregnant and was able to get up into the loft with the stairs, I didn't try the other one but the non-pregnant people fit well and the fold out couch was cozy. Our dog only managed to make it up the stairs 2 times before he decided it wasn't worth the risk, his paw slipped through since there's no backing so it kinda freaked him out. The additional dining room is perfect and it has everything you need for a quick weekend, we cooked from there most of the nights. Be sure to check out the Ferne Clyffe waterfall if your vehicle can handle driving through some water!

Convienant Location for State parks, small things added up to less than average stay

  • 3 of 5

I arrived at night. Given the remote location, it’s very very dark outside, but the deck lights were not lit, making it difficult to navigate the steps up to the house and access code to get into the property. But the owners were very responsive when I reached out saying I had issues getting in.

The heat was not on upon entering and it was 30 degrees out, so it was very cold for the first few hours. While there is a gas fireplace, it requires you to lay on your stomach and work controls under the fireplace, and in the end was too difficult to figure out.

But, while it may have been really cold downstairs, the lofts upstairs are very hot, making it an uncomfortable night sleep. While keep the fan on helps alleviate the problem slightly, it still makes for an unpleasant nights sleep (over 80 degrees.) Overall, very cold downstairs and very hot upstairs made for some sleepless nights.

Also, while I appreciate unexpired condiments from previous guests are kept in the kitchen, finding the prior guests’ perishable food, such as cheese, in the fridge was a little gross. And the provided pan in the kitchen is unusuable as the Teflon from the nonstick is noticabllly chipping away and contaminated my food. Please note if you cook, you need to bring your own Tupperware as there is no storage for food.

Overall, location was good. And if I only experienced one or two of the items above, I would have been perfectly comfortable with the place. But the culmination of all the small things encountered during the stay just made it difficult to fully enjoy the lodging.

Owner's Response: Samuel, I’m so sorry you had a hard time getting in and had a less than average stay. Unfortunately, you happened to stay when our normal cleaning person had the flu (I believe I mentioned that to you) and the person that filled in for her was not aware of all the extras normally done. I am sorry about the crazy weather in April and that the heat wasn’t on. In the book on the counter we give a description of how to keep the heaters and turn on fan to pull the hot air out of the loft. We don’t like to leave the fireplace on when we aren’t there but we should have turned on the wall heater for you. The pan is unacceptable and will be replaced immediately. We do much better when informed about the things that are needed so we can fix them right away rather than reading about them later. We always want your stay to go well while you are at the Red Roof Retreat and we pride ourselves on good reviews.

Perfect, quaint family getaway

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 5 and a big pawed furry friend, enjoyed our stay IMMENSELY!! We came at Christmas time to just get away and bond as a family. We look forward to coming back in warmer weather to explore and enjoy all outdoor and water activities.

This cabin and so cute, comfortable and although small, spacious and comfortable enough for our family of 5. Hosts were wonderful to communicate with. We enjoyed cooking all of our own meals and eating too much!! Kitchen is well stocked, although I might recommend a few more cooking utensils(spoons, ladel) and maybe a crockpot? However, not a big deal and I can always plan ahead next time! We stopped at Aldi in Marion for groceries as well as went into Goreville for s few extra items. Very easy to get to!

See you soon!

Relaxing and peaceful!

  • 5 of 5

What a great little cabin! My husband and our 3 kids (ages 10, 12 and 14) rented this for a weekend in October. It was exactly what we were looking for. The cabin was beautifully decorated and fully stocked with everything we needed. We cooked our dinners at the cabin and the cookware was high quality. I was pleasantly surprised with all the cabin extras. The kitchen had spices and condiments and the bathroom had plenty of toiletries. The weather was cold, but it didn't take long at all to heat up the cabin. I loved coming back from a long day of hiking and sitting next to the fireplace! We went down to the dock on our last day and got to try out the paddle boat. I imagine it's a lot of fun in the summer down at the lake, but we at least got to enjoy some beautiful views.

I'm not sure that this cabin would fit an older couple with mobility concerns as the stairs were narrow and we had to make sure to take them slow and steady. Also, the ladder to the loft area would make me nervous if I had younger children that needed to sleep up there. My kids were old enough that we didn't have any problems.

All in all, I would definitely suggest this property!

Location

If you are a lake person, there is fishing, boating and swimming. We include a dock with the rental where you can fish off of or park your boat. If you are a walker or hiker or climber, there is beautiful hiking all over southern IL from flat beautiful paths through the woods to rugged rock climbing the bluffs and everything in between. If you are a biker... wow, the bike paths are amazing. If you are a hunter, we have just the cabin for you to make your home base. If you are a stargazer... wow, you won't see stars like this! If you love the wineries, there are 2 wine trails in Southern IL and lots of beautiful wineries with the most gorgeous drives to each of them. Festivals, fairs and antiquing are more reason to stay at the Red Roof Retreat. It is quiet and lovely and near everything you need but far enough away that you will feel secluded. We welcome you!
