About Kris Shellabarger
We love our log cabin on the lake so much that we built another one to share with others. We spend much of the summer boating, fishing and swimming during the day and sitting around the fire at night. We also love to check out the local farmer's markets and wineries and sometimes hit the antique stores. In the winter, it is so cozy and we love to hike and catch up on a good book.
Kris Shellabarger purchased this Cabin in 2013
Why Kris Shellabarger chose Goreville
Lake living is what we love and after we built our log cabin, we wanted to build another smaller version to share with others. We built this across the street from the lake, but still with a dock and lake access.
What makes this Cabin unique
Peaceful, charming, warm and a great place to relax after a day of hiking, biking, boating, fishing or antiquing! Cozy fireplace for cooler evenings and winter retreats! We have a tiny cabin across the street if you need more room. It is located right on the lake with an outdoor shower!

Beautiful cabin. There is many different things to do and enjoy in the area. Our hosts were amazing.
It was so wonderful to be able to bring our four legged family members with us. We all enjoyed long walks. It is definitely some place to return to again and again.
Wished we would have found this place sooner!
The cabin exceeded all of our expectations. Kris and Matt were so welcoming and available at all times. The walk down to the lake was steep but close enough where it didn’t even matter. We had such a blast and will definitely be coming back. The cabin was absolutely perfect and we would highly recommend it to anyone!
Beautiful cabin, convenient quiet location, amazing owners! Loved everything.
Our family of four + pug enjoyed staying at the Red Roof Retreat! We had originally wanted to camp in the Shawnee Natl Forest, but decided to get a cabin at the last minute. I’m so glad this one was available! Our girls enjoyed the dock access to the lake and the paddle boat. We went day hiking, swimming & kayaking at nearby attractions—Garden of the Gods, Pounds Lake, Ferne Clyffe State Park and Crab Orchard Wildlife Refuge. The heat wave made us so thankful to have a cozy, air conditioned cabin to return to! So many nice little touches in and around the cabin, too many to name.
One day we noticed the AC unit in the loft was leaking water down the wall. I texted Kris and she immediately came over. While we were gone that day she replaced the AC unit and left S’Mores fixings for us to have that night by the campfire ring right outside the cabin. I’ve never had a host be so communicative and attentive— she’s the best! We would come back again for sure. Thank you!
The Red Roof Retreat was absolutely fabulous! It was charming, comfortable, cozy and fun.
There were so many thoughtful little touches too, like lights coming on the stairs down from the deck at night as soon as you step on them. It was wonderful! Perfect kitchen and lovely dining room and every bed was comfy. The lake and boats were loads of fun. We couldn’t have asked for a better cabin!
Clean and comfortable. Very cute house. Owners very easy to reach with any questions.
Plenty of room for the four of us. My kids are 19 and 14 and we all slept comfortably. The house is very cute and clean and had everything we needed. The area is quiet. Neighbors around but not too close and not noisy. We enjoyed a bonfire and s’mores one night. My kids used the paddle boat. My one advice is bring your own camp chairs. There are no seats by the pier with the paddle boat, and it rained and so the outdoor chairs were wet when we wanted to sit by the fire.
The owner checked in with us and was easily reachable. We would definitely come back.
It is a beautiful home with everything you need
We rented the cabin for a SIU graduation. The location worked well.
If you are a lake person, there is fishing, boating and swimming. We include a dock with the rental where you can fish off of or park your boat. If you are a walker or hiker or climber, there is beautiful hiking all over southern IL from flat beautiful paths through the woods to rugged rock climbing the bluffs and everything in between. If you are a biker... wow, the bike paths are amazing. If you are a hunter, we have just the cabin for you to make your home base. If you are a stargazer... wow, you won't see stars like this! If you love the wineries, there are 2 wine trails in Southern IL and lots of beautiful wineries with the most gorgeous drives to each of them. Festivals, fairs and antiquing are more reason to stay at the Red Roof Retreat. It is quiet and lovely and near everything you need but far enough away that you will feel secluded. We welcome you!
