INTERACTION WITH YOUR HOSTS -- WE LOVE HOSTING PEOPLE!!!! Your hosts are three, exceptionally friendly men, originally from New York (upstate and Manhattan), Washington, D.C. and Lancaster, PA. All three of us like to have fun, go out, and – most importantly – host guests. We welcome EVERYONE.
Harv, now retired, worked in mergers and acquisitions in NYC and in retirement held several positions running non-profits and created Lancaster's only visual and performing arts center: The Ware Center. Out-going & knows how to be an exceptional host.
His partner, Bill, still works as a WIFI specialist for an internationally known printing company. Bill lived in D.C. for seven years before moving to Lancaster, PA. Bill loves to fish. Plays tennis, pool, baseball & golf and poker.
Michael, the third member of the household, is also retired. But formerly worked alongside a former White House Chef as a caterer and had his own very successful catering and special event business and a hugely popular restaurant and bar. He originally hailed from upstate New York, lived in New York City and most recently Lancaster, PA. Excellent cook, good conversationalist, tends to the gardens daily.
"Over-the-top hospitality" is our thing. We will bend over backwards to make sure your stay with us in Wilton Manors and Ft. Lauderdale is a memorable one. Don't hesitate to ask us for recommendations on where to eat, what to see, and which bars are hot and for whom. We also will respect your privacy, if you prefer that. The important thing is: you get what you want. It is your visit -- our goal is to make it special."
We live in beautiful West Wilton Manors. It is a lively, upscale residential neighborhood -- about 60% gay -- only a few blocks from all the action on the famous Wilton Drive. The streets often have people walking their dogs, jogging or biking. There are hundreds of things to do and see, gay and straight.
Mikel Park -- which recently underwent a $1.6 million renovation and re-opened just this summer -- anchors the neighborhood and you are free to use it during your stay. It is a few steps from our home. The beautifully lighted and landscaped park features estate fencing, outside workout stations, a running/walking path, a sand-volley ball court and an amphitheatre for musical performances. The park is locked at dusk. There is also a police sub-station in the park and is kept lit all night.
We are located five miles from all the Ft. Lauderdale beaches, including Sebastian (the gay) Beach and Lauderdale-by-the-Sea (straight/family friendly), and less than five minutes from the bars/restaurants of Wilton Drive. And a short drive from the shops of Las Olas and Haulover Beach (the nude beach). 15 minutes from the Ft. Lauderdale airport. About thirty minutes (depending on traffic) from South Beach/Miami.
We are a two minute drive from Publix (a grocery store), Dunkin' Donuts, 24-hour 7-11, liquor stores, Home Depot & Lowes, Walmart Drug Store and many other retail stores, restaurants & bars.
We will be happy to recommend bars, gyms, restaurants, site-seeing spots, shopping areas -- depending on your preferences. Let us know what you want to do ahead of time and we'll prepare a customized list of suggested places to go and try. Suggestion: Check out Groupon.com for local deals on restaurants, massage services, attractions, theatre, etc. Also, upon your acceptance of your reservation, we will send you a specially-created-for-The-Cottage-Guests- only, 31-page manual that not only describes the house rules, but also places to go and see, recommended restaurants, location of nearest beaches and casinos, etc.
Although we are only a block or two from public transportation and taxi cabs are fairly easy to reach and inexpensive to use, we strongly recommend you rent a car so you can easily visit the attractions on Wilton Drive (about seven blocks away), all the beaches, restaurants, upscale shopping on Las Olas, and the nearby bars. Florida car rentals are inexpensive and parking incredibly cheap. (We'll show you where & how to pay, depending on where you want to go.) The cottage also comes with one FREE off-street parking space.
Given the nature of the city and its party-atmosphere, UBER is very popular and easy-to-use here. It will take you anywhere in the city (or drop you off anywhere in the City of Wilton Manors). UBER from the FLL airport is less than $20. A cab may be double that. We can also offer you two new bikes, if you prefer to get around that way.
OTHER THINGS TO NOTE
- All the major airlines fly into Fort Lauderdale International Airport (FLL). We highly recommend SouthWest Air, as they have less add-on “surprises” (like paying for luggage), when you book. Other good rates can be found with Spirit, Silver, Frontier, Allegiant, JetBlue and WestJet.
Note: You can pre-send a package (with clothes, for example). We’ll hold the package for you until you arrive. Although a little further and not nearly as accommodating as FLL, you may also want to check airfares into Miami (MIA) or Palm Beach International (PBI). Both are about forty minutes away.
- We offer a continental breakfast each weekday morning of your stay, plus you’ll find a Welcome Basket on your arrival, full of snacks, some libations and tips on what to do and how to get around.
- The cottage is attached to our home, though there is NO direct, inside access from the main house to the cottage. Your privacy is assured: there are no direct visual lines between the two buildings & sound does not carry between the cottage & the main house.
- The pool is surrounded by a high, cannot-see-over-it privacy fence. So you can consider the pool a clothing optional area. If you prefer to not sunbath nude, that's fine too. Since we only rent out this one space, you pretty much have these areas to yourself. They are shared with the hosts -- but rarely used by them.
- The hot tub is for your exclusive use. It only operates seasonally, though.
You get three hosts for the price of one. The hosts have received FIVE STAR ratings from every guest who has stayed here. Harv is a retired mergers and acquisitions specialist. Michael is a retired chef who used to work with a former White House chef and owned and operated a popular Irish restaurant and bar. Bill currently works as a Business Analyst for a large printing firm.
Harv & Michael lived in NYC. Bill lived in Washington, D.C. All three most recently hailed from Lancaster, PA, before moving permanently to Fort Lauderdale.
All three of us have extensive hospitality experience and will make sure your stay with us is an unforgettable one. We can guide you to the best places (based on your preferences) or give you complete privacy and let you discover our wonderful city yourselves.
We are available on a 24 hour basis, seven days a week. And, we will do our best to accommodate all your needs. Consider us your personal concierge service. Our goal is to not only meet your expectations, but exceed them.
Harvey Owen purchased this bungalow in 2014
The Cottage is a beautifully appointed, private 3-room unit, attached to the main house. However, there is no access from the main house. It has its own private entrance. It has been designed for maximum comfort and allows you to come and go as you please. It is one of the few BnB type places with its own entrance. It features a private patio with your own hot tub, plus a double doored gate to the shared with the hosts (but rarely used) pool, sunbathing patio, grill and outdoor eating area, set in a gorgeously landscaped lawn and tropical garden. We consider ourselves to be the best, most friendly and most accommodating hosts you'll that's what we did for a living: Cheers-like restaurant and bar owner, professional bartender, event specialist and former creative director of a visual performing arts center. We are very outgoing and friendly. We have received FIVE STAR ratings from every guest who has stayed with us from this and other booking sites.

Joe & Norm stayed at The Cottage for a week. What wonderful guests they were: polite, neat, friendly, respectful and incredibly interesting. I would recommend them to any VRBO host.
When I started thinking about my review I wasn't sure where to start or if I could do the stay justice with words because I was more impressed in person myself.
I'll start with the first contact with Harvey before I even booked my stay. Harvey was so helpful with information about the area and neighborhood. Just this conversation was the reason I booked with him.
When we landed I called Harvey and he seemed truly happy we were on our way and looking forward to meeting us.
When we arrived he greeted us with a smile and a drink . After our tour of the immaculate property and cottage we settled in only to find the pictures did the cottage justice just not enough because it was even more beautiful inside and out then we could have imagined . The cottage was so clean comfortable and smelled amazing inside. As for the the pool area and hot tub the grounds were surrounded by beautiful plants , trees with colorful flowers and decorations the just had us saying wow multiple time as we walked around. It just had that I'm at home feeling not awkward at all.
Harvey have us directions the beach and perfect place to park so we were close to the beach and all the shopping and nightlife we needed.
The list they provide you with of attractions and restaurants is extremely helpful.
During our stay Micheal, Harvey and William all took time out to talk to us about the area , life and themselves . They were interested in talking like old friends catching up rather then then just guests.
This backdrop of the beautiful cottage and fort Lauderdale beach were the perfect back drop for me to purpose to my girlfriend on our last night there. Of course she said yes and we headed home to the cottage afterwards Harvey was turning out the lights on the pool and was kind enough to congratulate us with a huge smile and hugs like a family member. He sat and had a glass of wine in celebration giving us some good advice and kind words . Which was extremely appreciated.
This stay the cottage and becoming friends with such amazing guys will just add to the memories we created on our stay. I will definitely return soon and hopefully many times to visit and it will be at the cottage forsure. If you on the fence about where to stay please let my review away you and I'm 100% confident you'll be happy and just as impressed with property ,cottage and hospitality. It's above 5 stars but I can't give more unfortunately. Thank you again for our stay. Jason and Kelly 2016
I was fortunate to spend a restful, quiet week at the Cottage in Wilton Manors. The hosts were welcoming, friendly and helpful. The Cottage is very comfortable and beautifully decorated. I woke each morning and shared coffee by the pool with Harv as we talked about my planned itinerary for the day. He provided brochures and personal recommendations about restaurants, beaches, museums, garden tours and any other activities I had planned; a wealth of information, a great resource and a pleasant way to start the day! The pool and the grounds at the Cottage are lovely and there is a nice public park at the end of the street. Harv, Bill and Michael are wonderful and made my stay a great vacation and I look forward to seeing them again sometime!
My husband and I enjoyed a three night stay at The Cottage in mid-March prior to sailing from Ft. Lauderdale to the Panama Canal. We got lost on the way from the airport but Harvey waited patiently and greeted us in the driveway. Since we host our own guest lodging in SW Washington, "The Cabin at Willapa Bay", we have high standards for cleanliness, privacy, and friendliness. Harvey and friends provided a five star experience. The Cottage is charming, the hosts most gracious, and the surroundings clean and comfortable. I especially enjoyed the lovely, warm pool. Thanks, guys.
As a mature couple and not staying for our usual month-long winter visit to Ft. Lauderdale, we looked for a property that rented for a week. The Cottage caught my eye, as we wanted something smaller than a rental home. It was the perfect choice!
It was clean, comfortable, well designed and nicely decorated...with a living room, small kitchen area, bath with shower and bedroom with a queen sized bed.. The private outdoor patio was a welcomed retreat, with its double chaise, umbrella, outdoor table and chairs and hot tub. Through the gate was the magnificent and lush backyard of the hosts...Harvey, Bill and Michael. The heated pool and patio were available for use at any time of day or night. The "guys" were very respectful of our privacy, yet were around whenever you needed assistance or just to chat.
The property is situated in the western part of Wilton Manors, in a quiet residential neighborhood, with off-street parking. It's a beautiful home, with luxurious plantings and very well maintained. The cottage sits behind the home, with its own private entrance walkway, through a locked gate. It's just minutes to downtown Fort Lauderdale, the beaches, as well as the shops and restaurants of Wilton Manors.
As for the hosts, you couldn't ask for better. What great guys!!! They were attentive to our every need, always available and fun to be with. And Harvey's breakfasts, whether served by the pool or in the kitchen of the main house, were the perfect start to the day,
All in all, we would highly recommend a stay at The Cottage, when you visit the Wilton Manors/Ft. Lauderdale area. You won't be disappointed.
We are very glad that we chose The Cottage for our week in the Fort Lauderdale area. From the cold beverage on arrival--so welcome after a 6 hour flight!--to the final goodbyes, Harve, Bill, and Michael demonstrated that they truly are consummate hosts. Their care and attention to detail was impressive. We felt very welcome and at home in their cozy cottage. The cottage, patios, pool, and grounds were even nicer than described and pictured. The cottage itself was spotlessly clean, cozy, and comfortable, and attractively furnished. The patios, pool, and grounds are wonderfully tropical and resort-like. As gardeners, we can appreciate the hard work that goes into maintaining that much landscaping!
The location in Wilton Manors is peaceful and quiet, yet near the many dining and nightlife options on Wilton Drive. It's also
only a 15-20 minute drive to the Fort Lauderdale beaches and restaurants. Harve advised us as to where to go, when to go, and where to park--very helpful info for a snag-free day at the beach! The cottage is also conveniently located to access I-95 for day trips to other parts of South Florida.
The weather was a bit too cool (dang polar vortex!) to eat outside on the patio so Harve served a continental breakfast in his kitchen. We thoroughly enjoyed chatting with him and discussing our plans for the day. We really appreciated his good advice
as well as the extensive guide book to the cottage which answered many practical and tourist questions.
Would we return to The Cottage? Absolutely! And we will heartily recommend it to any of our friends or family who might contemplating a trip to South Florida or a Caribbean cruise out of Fort Lauderdale.
Often you rent places with great hesitation not knowing what you are really to expect. The cottage, which is conveniently located in the heart of Wilton Manors, exceeded all expectations. The residence is meticulously decorated, spotless and comfortable. Our hosts make you feel part of a family. Beyond hosting, they anticipate every need in an extensive book on the cottage, the local sights, restaurants and entertainment. They provide a continental breakfast and use of the pool and hot tub. We rarely recommend anything to our friends, but the cottage will be highly recommended to anyone interested in visiting Fort Lauderdale and Wilton Manors.
Wilton Manors is an "Island City" within the city of Fort Lauderdale. It is a huge tourist area, mainly with gay men and women. There are literally hundreds of things to do and see, great restaurants and bars of all types. When you check in, we'll provide you with a personalized list of things to do in our area during your stay, recommended bars/restaurants, and suggestions on where to shop, etc.
