About the property

The Casa Rio Rancho, is located on site at Rio Rancho Verde, an eco-ranch that is committed to a supporting a sustainable environment in the midst of the Sonoran Desert. We offer a secluded and serene getaway, surrounded by the most amazing scenery, yet we're only 20 minutes away from fine dining and shopping in North Scottsdale. This relaxing alternative to the fast pace of city life is a welcome retreat in a rural, Western setting.

We offer a private two bedroom suite, (attached to the house, but separated by an insulated wall so there is no access to the main house) with it's own bathroom and desk area. The master suite has a queen bed and there is an option for a 2nd bedroom with twin beds, if you need more space, or are traveling with family or friends. There is a separate private entrance and the suite opens to the pool and patio which includes an outdoor kitchen and bar area with frig, microwave, sink and outdoor BBQ island with cooktop, fireplace, dining room table and seating for 45 people, overlooking the pool and the beautiful Sonoran desert. Please contact owner for rates for the entire suite with both bedrooms.

Continental breakfast, served poolside, is available upon request and at an additional cost. Come out and hike, bike or ride a horse (yours are welcome, rentals available down the road) or just relax and watch the spectacular sunsets on the ridge overlooking the mountains and desert vistas. You can walk right out our gate into the Tonto National Forest, or the Scottsdale McDowell Preserve where you'll find miles and miles of trails filled with Saguaro cactus and perhaps a coyote or two! Or, just relax and enjoy a glass of wine on the deck overlooking the pool as the sun goes down, or sip your morning coffee in the barn as the horses wait for their breakfast.Suite is available with either one or two bedrooms, one bathroom total. Please note that the pool is not heated. This is truly a unique and very special place, we hope to share it with you!

Also, if the private suite is booked or for additional information about the ranch, please check out our other luxury listing, VRBO # 762576 or VRBO 766813.

About Carmela Lizzo

My husband and I love living in the desert and enjoy sharing this incredible space with our guests. We've made some incredible friends who return year after year and who love to ride their horses with us to discover new trails and places. We're both avid horseback riders, Joe's a roper, and also like mountain biking and hiking on the trails outside our gates. We have an organic garden on site, we compost and are big on reduce, reuse, recycle and re-purpose! We like being sustainable, we're on a well so we're always mindful of water consumption, and the veggies in our garden could feed an army!

Carmela Lizzo purchased this house in 1990

Why Carmela Lizzo chose Scottsdale

Why do we own this property? We wanted to live as far out in the desert as we possibly could, but still have the conveniences of town. We specifically looked in the Rio Verde Foothills area because we wanted to live on the National Forest and have neighbors who were close enough to become friends but far enough away to give us our space. (we have awesome neighbors!!). I was born and raised in Chicago and on every vacation we ever took, I would be the little girl in the car looking out the window at the wide open spaces and the cowboy riding the range and wish that was me. Rio Rancho Verde is our dream come true.

Why should you select Rio Rancho Verde for your next trip? There's truly nothing else like it! When you see how beautiful our land is you'll know immediately that it's a very special place. We're incredibly blessed and grateful to call this home and we love to share it with guests who love the outdoors and appreciate the beauty that surrounds us. It's an amazing place with 360 degree views that feature mountain vistas, spectacular sunrises and sunsets, skies full of stars and a peaceful serenity that gets right down in your soul. It's the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of city/corporate/daily life - we have a annual visitor who told us "I may reside in MO, but I LIVE here on the ranch".

What makes this house unique

Enjoy country living 20 minutes from the city of Scottsdale. You'll feel like you're in the middle of nowhere (and you kind of are!) but fine dining, shopping, nightlife and Western adventures are a short drive away. Rio Rancho Verde offers the best of both worlds. It's serene and peaceful, the views are incredible, we get visited by the local wildlife, the scenery is spectacular - it's amazing! My daughter, when she comes to visit, says: "this is what quiet sounds like", and it's so true.

Come and unplug

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I used this amazing suite for a quick five day getaway from the hustle and bustle of life. We flew in from Washington State and drove about an hour north from the Phoenix airport (Sky Harbor). On the drive to the property we quickly learned that this was going to be different than any other time we have stayed in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area. During the final 15 minutes of the drive we were unable to see any commercial buildings only desert landscape as far as you could see. We were met by the property owners, first by Joe then Carmela. Their beautiful estate was better in person and immaculately kept. The suite had no TV which made it very easy to sit outside and enjoy the peaceful sounds of the desert and relax in the Arizona weather we had come for. We are an active couple and were able to trail run and hike from the property. Carmela is very outgoing and had recommendations on just about everything for us. She also treated us to a great breakfast that awaited for us on the outdoor patio as soon as we got up. I can say we did not have a single negative experience while staying here and if time and scheduling allow, we will come again soon. Thank you Carmela and Joe...

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for the wonderful feedback. We're always so happy to have guests stay with us who "get it" - who truly appreciate the natural beauty of this amazing place in which we live. The solitude and the silence of the surrounding desert aren't for everyone and it's a treat for us when those who visit are able to "unplug" and truly enjoy the opportunity to soak up the sun and the spectacular scenery of the Sonoran Desert. And, being 20 minutes from Scottsdale gives us the best of both. Please come see us again!

An Oasis in the Scottsdale Sonoran Desert

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I enjoyed a 4-night stay at Casa Rio Rancho, located on a horse ranch near Tonto National Forest. The property is accessed via fun, dirt roads (very well maintained) where you will see more saguaro cactus, desert birds and rabbits than neighbors. The accommodations were very comfortable with a large resort style bathroom and guest suite. The outdoor kitchen reminded us of “glam camping” as we cooked and prepared meals from our beautifully landscaped patio surrounded by mesmerizing desert mountain scenery as far as the eye could see. The pool was a bit too chilly for us to get in but offered a tranquil water oasis that definitely added to our experience.

Our hosts were readily available but did not make an appearance unless asked, allowing us to have the entire pool/patio area to ourselves. They are very knowledgable and offered detailed information about hiking, shopping, restaurants and other activities. Tip: Rent a large pick up truck (instead of a car) and enjoy access to even more outdoor recreation nearby.

I would highly recommend this rental to anyone who is active, loves the outdoors and is looking for much more from their vacation than the crowded, mind-numbing resort/condo experience.

Breathtaking

  • 5 of 5

Carmela and Joe were fantastic hosts - very friendly and accommodating. The patio area was so relaxing with 360 degree views of the surrounding desert and mountains. The outdoor kitchen was a blast! Cooking and enjoying meals on the patio-with the desert all around you, while enjoying the beautiful amenities of the suite made for a memorable experience. With the fire pit and patio heater at night, it was hard to drag ourselves inside. We will be back!! Thanks Carmela and Joe.

Amazing beauty!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I truly enjoyed our 3 night stay at this property! The scenery is breathtaking and so peaceful. We enjoyed all our walks around the area, especially enjoyed spending time at the barn visiting the horses. Everyone was so friendly and willing to answer our horse questions! The garden was a great addition and we loved the tomatos. Thank you! Sunrises and sunsets were beautiful and we enjoyed sitting outside by the pool during the day and fire pit at night. This is definitely a property we would visit again! Carmella and Joe are most gracious hosts! Thank you for sharing your home with us!
