You can walk right out our gate into the Tonto National Forest, or the Scottsdale McDowell Preserve where you'll find miles and miles of trails filled with Saguaro cactus and perhaps a coyote or two! Or, just relax and enjoy a glass of wine on the deck overlooking the pool as the sun goes down, or sip your morning coffee in the barn as the horses wait for their breakfast.Suite is available with either one or two bedrooms, one bathroom total. Please note that the pool is not heated. This is truly a unique and very special place, we hope to share it with you!

About Carmela Lizzo

My husband and I love living in the desert and enjoy sharing this incredible space with our guests. We've made some incredible friends who return year after year and who love to ride their horses with us to discover new trails and places. We're both avid horseback riders, Joe's a roper, and also like mountain biking and hiking on the trails outside our gates. We have an organic garden on site, we compost and are big on reduce, reuse, recycle and re-purpose! We like being sustainable, we're on a well so we're always mindful of water consumption, and the veggies in our garden could feed an army!

Carmela Lizzo purchased this house in 1990

Why Carmela Lizzo chose Rio Verde Foothills

Why do we own this property? We wanted to live as far out in the desert as we possibly could, but still have the conveniences of town. We specifically looked in the Rio Verde Foothills area because we wanted to live on the National Forest and have neighbors who were close enough to become friends but far enough away to give us our space. (we have awesome neighbors!!). I was born and raised in Chicago and on every vacation we ever took, I would be the little girl in the car looking out the window at the wide open spaces and the cowboy riding the range and wish that was me. Rio Rancho Verde is our dream come true.

Why should you select Rio Rancho Verde for your next trip? There's truly nothing else like it! When you see how beautiful our land is you'll know immediately that it's a very special place. We're incredibly blessed and grateful to call this home and we love to share it with guests who love the outdoors and appreciate the beauty that surrounds us. It's an amazing place with 360 degree views that feature mountain vistas, spectacular sunrises and sunsets, skies full of stars and a peaceful serenity that gets right down in your soul. It's the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of city/corporate/daily life - we have a annual visitor who told us "I may reside in MO, but I LIVE here on the ranch".

What makes this house unique

Enjoy country living 20 minutes from the city of Scottsdale. You'll feel like you're in the middle of nowhere (and you kind of are!) but fine dining, shopping, nightlife and Western adventures are a short drive away. Rio Rancho Verde offers the best of both worlds. It's serene and peaceful, the views are incredible, we get visited by the local wildlife, the scenery is spectacular - it's amazing! My daughter, when she comes to visit, says: "this is what quiet sounds like", and it's so true.

Pictures don't do it justice

  • 5 of 5

This is the first place I've ever stayed where the actual place looks better than the beautiful photos. It is very quiet and located close to a lot of great trails and hiking. The whole entire place is very well kept up and accommodations are above par in my opinion. "Downtown" Scottsdale where the restaurants and shopping are located is a decent 30 minute drive - but well worth it to stay out of the city. I would highly recommend this place!

Desert Paradise

  • 5 of 5

I had a fantastic time. Carmela and Joe were incredible hosts. There were very welcoming and easy to talk to when I had questions. The suite and patio areas were beautifully maintained and exceptionally clean. I would agree with a previous reviewer that the pictures can't completely capture the full feel of how beautiful it is. As a working ranch, you have the ability to wander around the barns, garden, and horses while work is being done.

You are within 30 minutes of many courses that offer some of the best golf you'll find. Groceries, gas, and some shopping are about 20 minutes away. Any cooking you do will be outdoors in a beautiful setup but refrigerator space is limited and you will want to account for the temps during your stay so you want to plan accordingly.

Downtown Scottsdale and Phoenix are 30-60 minute drives so, hopefully, you agenda will allow you to find you way there and stay because running back to town is a trip. I keep referencing distances in relation to minutes (as opposed to miles) because the last 7-8 miles (if coming from Phoenix) will be a lower speeds (25-35). The roads are fine but you will probably appreciate some reasonable ground clearance on whatever vehicle you drive. I had a small crossover and it worked great.

Anyway, I will look forward to a future visit. Hope this helps!

Sonoran Desert Views

  • 5 of 5

Wow. Peace and tranquility. This home is situated between the McDowell Sonoran Preserve and Tonto National Forest. The patio is spacious and luxurious with amazing 180 degree mountain and desert views! A variety of comfortable seating areas for lounging or reading. The infinity edge pool is lovely to look at and listen to. The gas fire pit and patio heaters allowed us to enjoy the beautiful outdoor space even though lows were in the 40’s during our stay. We sipped coffee while watching the sun rise over the desert and wine in the evening watching it set. Star gazing is incredible!

Horseback riding is down the road and there are miles of hiking and mountain bike trails. Golf nearby too.

There is a well equipped outdoor kitchen but we only used the mini fridge, microwave and coffee maker, choosing instead to head into Cave Creek, North Scottsdale or Rio Verde for dinners.

The 2 bedrooms and full bathroom are high quality, beautifully decorated and were carefully separated from the rest of the house. We rarely saw the owners and when we did they put us completely at ease. Very helpful with information about local hikes, riding and restaurants.

We had a great stay and would definitely choose the desert vacation experience again!

Beautiful property and welcoming hosts!

  • 5 of 5

First off the car ride to the property is a hoot; the land follows the terrain so it's like being on a roller coaster. You may think you have driven too far after 2.5 miles of paved road but keep going another 2.5 miles on the dirt road and you are at you’re in for a secluded treat! Although, you are not alone your company are Carmela and Joe, as well as a few more permanent snowbirds that bring their horses everyone is so friendly. The scenery is awesome, the landscape around you is all perfectly groomed, the horses and barns are amazing and you can hike for miles or just sit and enjoy the view, as we did.

This is our 2nd time staying at Rio Rancho Verde. Four years ago we stayed in the Casita and absolutely loved the charm and how very authentic it is. This year we stayed in the bedroom suite which is poolside. We choose this option anticipating a few warm days around the pool to catch some rays before heading back to cold Minnesota. However, Mother Nature decided otherwise, it was very cool so instead we enjoyed the fire pit and patio heaters.

You will not be sorry for booking this beautiful property your hosts Carmela and Joe are the best! They are so accommodating and friendliest people you will ever meet. Rooms are beautifully decorated and are maliciously clean, as is the entire property.

We loved it and will be back!

Only suggestion I would make is for a TV in the room, just in case of rain. (Smiley face)

We're delighted you enjoyed your stay and wished you could of had warmer weather, but hopefully next time. Joe and I have a stand-off on that TV, stay tuned (haha!).

A remembrance of a lifetime!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I spent four nights on this beautiful property, From the time we arrived to the time we left, we felt like were truly welcomed guests. The bedroom, living space, and the bathroom were very comfortable. The outdoor kitchen with a view of the mountains and the pool was wonderful. We met other great guests on the ranch that were welcoming and friendly. The entire experience, staying on the ranch in the middle of the desert, was a memorable one! Hiking and mountain bike riding the abundant trails, horse back riding at a nearby ranch were just some of the fun activities. Carmella and Joe were excellent hosts with many great tips.
