About the property

Private suite with one Bedroom with optional 2nd Bedroom, can sleep up to 4

The Casa Rio Rancho, is located on site at Rio Rancho Verde, an eco-ranch that is committed to a supporting a sustainable environment in the midst of the Sonoran Desert. We offer a secluded and serene getaway, surrounded by the most amazing scenery, yet we're only 20 minutes away from fine dining and shopping in North Scottsdale. This relaxing alternative to the fast pace of city life is a welcome retreat in a rural, Western setting.

We offer a private two bedroom suite, (attached to the house, but separated by an insulated wall so there is no access to the main house) with it's own bathroom and desk area. The master suite has a queen bed and there is an option for a 2nd bedroom with twin beds, if you need more space, or are traveling with family or friends. There is a separate private entrance and the suite opens to the pool and patio which includes an outdoor kitchen and bar area with frig, microwave, sink and outdoor BBQ island with cooktop, fireplace, dining room table and seating for 45 people, overlooking the pool and the beautiful Sonoran desert. Please contact owner for rates for the entire suite with both bedrooms.

Continental breakfast, served poolside, is available upon request and at an additional cost. Come out and hike, bike or ride a horse (yours are welcome, rentals available down the road) or just relax and watch the spectacular sunsets on the ridge overlooking the mountains and desert vistas. You can walk right out our gate into the Tonto National Forest, or the Scottsdale McDowell Preserve where you'll find miles and miles of trails filled with Saguaro cactus and perhaps a coyote or two! Or, just relax and enjoy a glass of wine on the deck overlooking the pool as the sun goes down, or sip your morning coffee in the barn as the horses wait for their breakfast.Suite is available with either one or two bedrooms, one bathroom total. Please note that the pool is not heated. This is truly a unique and very special place, we hope to share it with you!

Also, if the private suite is booked or for additional information about the ranch, please check out our other luxury listing, VRBO # 762576 or VRBO 766813.

About Carmela Lizzo

My husband and I love living in the desert and enjoy sharing this incredible space with our guests. We've made some incredible friends who return year after year and who love to ride their horses with us to discover new trails and places. We're both avid horseback riders, Joe's a roper, and also like mountain biking and hiking on the trails outside our gates. We have an organic garden on site, we compost and are big on reduce, reuse, recycle and re-purpose! We like being sustainable, we're on a well so we're always mindful of water consumption, and the veggies in our garden could feed an army!

Carmela Lizzo purchased this house in 1990

Why Carmela Lizzo chose Scottsdale

Why do we own this property? We wanted to live as far out in the desert as we possibly could, but still have the conveniences of town. We specifically looked in the Rio Verde Foothills area because we wanted to live on the National Forest and have neighbors who were close enough to become friends but far enough away to give us our space. (we have awesome neighbors!!). I was born and raised in Chicago and on every vacation we ever took, I would be the little girl in the car looking out the window at the wide open spaces and the cowboy riding the range and wish that was me. Rio Rancho Verde is our dream come true.

Why should you select Rio Rancho Verde for your next trip? There's truly nothing else like it! When you see how beautiful our land is you'll know immediately that it's a very special place. We're incredibly blessed and grateful to call this home and we love to share it with guests who love the outdoors and appreciate the beauty that surrounds us. It's an amazing place with 360 degree views that feature mountain vistas, spectacular sunrises and sunsets, skies full of stars and a peaceful serenity that gets right down in your soul. It's the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of city/corporate/daily life - we have a annual visitor who told us "I may reside in MO, but I LIVE here on the ranch".

What makes this house unique

Enjoy country living 20 minutes from the city of Scottsdale. You'll feel like you're in the middle of nowhere (and you kind of are!) but fine dining, shopping, nightlife and Western adventures are a short drive away. Rio Rancho Verde offers the best of both worlds. It's serene and peaceful, the views are incredible, we get visited by the local wildlife, the scenery is spectacular - it's amazing! My daughter, when she comes to visit, says: "this is what quiet sounds like", and it's so true.

Not as expected

  • 2 of 5

The property is in a beautiful, remote location. There is not a kitchen, there is an outdoor bbq, small microwave and a mini frig. There were no games or tv, and lighting was so bad reading was not possible, unless you sat in the closet (good light in the closet). When it rains, these are not covered and essentially useless. The trip out to the property takes a good 1/2 hour and if you are prone to motion sickness, you will want to stay put once you arrive. The beds, linens, and bathroom situation were as anticipated and very nice. The pool however was too chilly to use and is not private, there are multiple places to stay on the property and the pool is communal. Another issue is the fact that you enter the room through a slider which only locks from the inside. When you leave for the day your room is open. This didn't turn out to be a problem but it certainly could have been. Frankly, it was a disappointment.

Owner's Response: I'm sorry you were disappointed with your stay. In our listing, we try our best to include an accurate description, so we not only meet, but exceed your expectations. The pool is NOT communal, it's private and exclusive for the occupants of the bedroom suite only. There were 2 other guests here during your stay, one's a repeat visitor who has a 2 year old and under no circumstance would she venture anywhere near the pool with her little one. The other guest stayed on the opposite side of the property and was gone most of the day hiking and exploring the desert. We did have someone bring in the patio furniture when it started to rain, and they also clean the pool, but that was the only person who was in the backyard area during your stay. The kitchen is outdoors, which is clearly stated in the description - our definition of a kitchen is clearly spelled out in the listing. It includes a refrigerator, microwave, kitchen sink, ice/food storage area, a 10' kitchen counter, breakfast bar, BBQ grill with cooktop, firepit and heater. The cabinets are fully stocked with plates, utensils, pots, pans, glasses, silverware, bowls, cups, cutlery, paper towels, dish soap, spices, teas, blender, coffee pot and press, placemats, napkins, etc. There's also a dining room table that seats 8, (under cover) along with additional seating for 45 people, all overlooking the pool and the Sonoran desert. The pool is not heated, and can be chilly when the weather drops - I apologize that it wasn't 80 degrees and sunny while you were here. We do appreciate the feedback on the lighting, games and TV - we've added Scrabble, cards and a few other games, along with lighting but we're holding out on the TV as we hope that our guests use our ranch as a place to unwind, connect with nature and take a break from the oversaturating CNN/Fox news madness. We find that most of our guests select our property to get away from their daily routine and entertain themselves by reconnecting with each other and hiking or exploring the natural beauty that surrounds us. We're certainly not for everyone, and if a 30 minute drive is not in your comfort zone, then you might be happier in a hotel in the city with a TV and a heated pool. However if you love the outdoors and appreciate the beauty of the spectacular desert scenery in which we live, along with the remote and beautiful location that you described, we'd love to have you visit!

If you want a true Arizona ranch retreat this is it!

62 acres of prime Az desert

Breathtaking views, complete silence at night and maybe a coyote serenade if you are lucky.

Carmella is most gracious and very helpful in all aspects of the property and surroundings.

We stayed in the guest house and were very comfortable.

Gr8 comfortable bed.

You may also stay int the bunkhouse or spacious 5th wheel trailer.

Will definitely return.

Favorite Spring Getaway

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I have vacationed twice at the Ranch and plan to this year as well for an enjoyable, relaxing getaway in an absolutely friendly atmosphere. We can take an easy hike or more challenging one as desired, with excellent recommendations from Carmela and Joe without even getting in a car!

From the beautiful sunrise to amazing sunset your day can be filled with multiple places to travel to for a fun filled day of excitement or relaxation.

Accommodations are very clean, comfortable and reasonably priced whether you stay in theirs or bring in your own RV.

Sunshine and Quiet!

  • 5 of 5

I stayed at Casa Rio Rancho for a week with my three 20 something daughters. Rio Rancho is a beautiful desert location. We enjoyed local hiking - some challenging hikes and some enjoyable walks. We were also able to visit some Scottsdale landmarks in the evenings. Rio Rancho is a bit secluded, but we enjoyed the quiet and private pool area very much. Carmela and Joe were great hosts!

A True Arizona Experience!

  • 5 of 5

My two girlfriends and I stayed for three nights with Carmela & Joe and they were fantastic hosts! It was like staying at a beautiful B&B where we were the only guests! We opted to purchase the Continental Breakfast our first morning and it was wonderfully laid out for us when we got up in the morning to watch the sun rise over the mountains.

It is out of the way, but you get gorgeous views with sunrises and sunsets. horses that you can visit and feed carrots, an organic vegetable garden and great people. It's a great place for hikers as well.

We ate out a few times, but the small, outdoor kitchen right outside our doors was just fine for dinners by the pool.

Beautiful views, lacking privacy

  • 3 of 5

The location is beautiful, just like the pictures except better. The owner is a nice, helpful lady. The two bedrooms we rented were well appointed, nice sheets, clean. I only wish there were an inner kitchen type area or sitting area for when the weather is inclement. It's just two bedrooms and a bathroom. We had a rain storm(rare)while we stayed in Jan. The barrier between the main house and the rented section we stayed in was ineffectual. We heard every word from the main house. Also ,the outdoor kitchen pool area was supposed to be exclusive to us, however we found other guests on it repeatedly saying the owner said we could come up here and see, while we were having dinner with our family . Every square inch of this property appears rented. There were 6 trailers on the property when we were here, and a cabin with many people milling about. So, while it was a beautiful spot, we would not return for those reasons.

Owner's Response: We appreciate your feedback - it is a beautiful place, and there can be lot going on at the ranch! I'm sorry that you were unhappy that we wouldn't let your brother sleep on the floor during your stay (while we do have several rental options available, each unique and private in their own way, the floor just isn't one of them) Since we're located on 62 acres there's plenty of space for everyone to enjoy the different experiences that we offer. There are actually only 3 different areas for rent, as we like to maintain a private, upscale, exclusive and unique experience for all of our guests, in whichever space they choose to reserve. Horses and their owners are a part of the ranch and we have many repeat visitors who stay in their trailers down by the barn in their own private area. The bunkhouse, (not a cabin) also enjoys it's own private space and courtyard away from the bedroom suite in which you were staying. Many of our guests are repeat visitors who have become good friends and several were in the bunkhouse courtyard enjoying a glass of wine, watching the sunset while you were here one evening. I apologize if you were offended by them "milling about". The pool and backyard are exclusive for those guests in the bedroom and are not available for other guests to use. During your stay my brother was here from Chicago and while you were gone one afternoon he sat outside to soak up the sun. He left immediately upon your return. The other guests who took a look at the pool were visiting and considering the bedroom for next year, they were in the backyard for approximately 5 minutes, so I apologize that you were inconvenienced for 10 minutes during your 3 day stay. As we are always striving to improve we have recently taken steps to further address the dividing wall between the house and the suite by adding additional insulation. While we certainly could rent "every square inch" of our property, that's just not what we're all about, thus the decision to not let your brother crash on our floor. We pride ourselves on the experience we offer our guests, and strive to maintain a standard that enables our visitors to enjoy a very special, very unique and very exclusive piece of our little piece of paradise!

There is a refundable $100 deposit, if no damages occur.
The $129 rate is for one room only per night. If you reserve the 2nd bedroom there is an additional $89 fee per night. So, if you reserve both bedrooms, the cost per night is $218.00 for both bedrooms. We only rent to one party at a time so if you're just reserving one bedroom for 2 people, you actually get both bedrooms to yourselves at a rate of $129. VRBO has difficulty computing the math, so if you want both bedrooms, please contact me for the correct quote, as the amount that they configure will be incorrect and we will not honor the rate that they offer you.
