About the property

If your family and friends are looking for a unique Glacier Park experience , check out this over 2500 sq. ft. Walton House in Essex, Montana. This three Bedroom, two bath, true Ski-In/Ski-Out house is located just a minute away from the Izaak Walton Inn in Essex, Montana. The Izaak Walton Inn, which is a must see for rail fans and others interested in the history of the Great Northern Railway's Empire Builder. The scenic Inn, which is on the National List of Historic Places, is a well known stop for lunch and a delightful destination for lodging both summer and winter. Guests of the Walton House are invited to enjoy all the Inn's amenities as if they were a guest of the Inn.

Bordering both Glacier National Park and the Bob Marshall Wilderness, this house makes a for a great base camp for your family or group vacation. The house features three bedrooms, with a master bedroom on the second floor with full bathroom. Guest room on the second floor has a trundle bed with two twin size mattresses and another guest room on the main level has a queen size bed, as well a full kitchen, living room, deck, & bbq. The deck looks out over two mountain ranges, and a huge yard allows for fun family activities. Slap your steaks on the grill and grab a cocktail from the Flagstop Bar at the Inn, or skip cooking altogether and head to the Dining Car Restaurant with patio seating to take in the majestic views and wait for the sun to set.

We are situated equal distance between both East & West entrances to Glacier National Park. A scenic drive along beautiful HWY 2 following the Clark-Fork & Empire Builder line will put you there, or arrive via Amtrak along the Empire Builder Line and the Inn will pick you up on the start of your vacation.

A popular wildlife attraction near the Walton House is the nearby (within a few miles) Walton Goat Lick Overlook. A sign directs you to a paved road ending in an ample parking lot where a paved, short and gentle trail leads to a view spot overlooking the deep canyon of Sheep Creek. Exposed rocks along the creek seep salts and minerals attractive to the local mountain goats. Best months of the year to see the goats are said to be June and July where as many as 75 at a time might appear.

Would not go back. Upkeep has not been a priority.

Layout: 4/5. Overall, this place is quite well laid out, with three quirky exceptions. The 1st quirk is that access to the downstairs bedroom is under the stairs and anyone taller than 5-1/2 feet will have to duck their head to avoid hitting it. The 2nd quirk is that the bonus bedroom is long and narrow with 15 empty feet between the door and day bed. Finally, the master bedroom has no dressers, but an abundance of shelves.

Kitchen: 1/5. The kitchen was poorly stocked. Hardly any useful pots and pans. the frying pan was barely big enough for two eggs. We found a griddle hidden in a closet but it needed a good scrub before we dared use it. Cutlery was ridiculous. Various spoons and forks but only four knives. Very few items such as spatulas. The ones they had were pretty flimsy. There's were not any baking pans. We had to go ask at the hotel and they finally found ONE at some other unit.

Maintenance: 1/5. When we arrived, one of the shades in the master bedroom was completely busted. It had obviously been that way for quite a while. There were also old cable wires still hanging from the wall outlet which were trip hazards. There were no hangers in any of the closets. Many other maintenance issues had clearly not been addressed and the place had a feel of emerging dilapidation. Clearly, maintenance is not a priority.

Beds: 2/5. Oh my goodness, what a disappointment. The downstairs bed was of reasonable quality, but the mattresses in the master bedroom upstairs were horrific. You'd find better beds at a cheap roadside hotel. We ended up using the day bed mattresses from the bonus room. These mattresses should have been replaced long ago. We let the staff know and they said they would put it "on the list." Should have been remedied quickly!

Issue Resolution: 4/5. The staff at the Inn were very responsive to the deficiencies noted upon our arrival and quickly repaired what they could.

Housekeeping: 1/5. Daily housekeeping included in the rental was horrific. Upon arrival, we discovered dirty old dishes with moldy food in the kitchen and a bedroom closet. Yuck! The carpets were not vacuumed before or during our entire stay. Our coffee supplies were never restocked. A 4-year old could have done a better job making the beds.

Other Issues: We were quite disappointed that the house has a wood stove in the living area, but you are not allowed to use it. Why? There was a fire pit outside with some damp wood, but it's not the same (or satisfactory).
