RENTERS BEWARE: ONLY about 100 of these 330+ properties are actually ON Balboa Island!

Either method above tells the story of this exceptional 4 bedroom / 3.5 bath custom home with water views, just 50 yards from the waterfront in three directions, on the southeast corner of "Little" Balboa Island. Designed by noted local architect Ian Harrison and built in 2004, our Cape Cod home offers the best of Balboa Island. Located less than a quarter mile (3 blocks) from Marine Avenue where blocks of lovely shops and restaurants have been providing retail amenities to the area for more than 100 years.

Our home is NOT your basic worn & torn "beach rental" and may not be the best house for families with lots of young children. The property includes high-end design, construction, appliances, finishes and furnishings. We offer wide plank hardwood flooring on the ground level, nine foot ceilings or more throughout the house, a "state-of-the-art" 7.1 surround sound system with a 55" high definition TV in living room, as well as a three zone Nest-controlled air conditioning system (air conditioning is rare among vacation rentals on Balboa Island). An ELEVATOR is available for senior citizens (upon request) and there is a fully equipped laundry room with granite counters and a sink INSIDE the house. We also provide a large parking space in our attached garage that comfortably accommodates a full size car (opposite our own car that we usually leave covered in a very tidy two-car garage); AND there is abundant free parking on the streets of Little Balboa Island. As well, our home has a fully furnished rooftop deck on the third floor with an array of views of the water and Fashion Island on the mainland.

We call our home "Casa la Pina", or in English, “The Pineapple House”, and you will note the theme in our decorating. If curious, Google “pineapple meaning”, as the pineapple has been a sign of hospitality dating back to the days of the tall sailing ships when sea captains brought the tropical delicacy back to their northern homes and left them on their porch as a sign of their return and an open invitation for friends to visit. Pineapples were discovered by Christopher Columbus in the Caribbean on his first trip to the "New World" and they remain a symbol of welcome throughout Western Civilization today.

NOTE: The living and dining rooms of our home were refurnished and some pictures displayed on this listing do not depict current furnishings. We've not had a chance to have new professional photos taken yet, but rest assured, the new furnishings are of comparable, if not better, quality and taste to the ones you see!

AERIAL TOUR: We have added a link to an aerial video (from YouTube) that was shot by a drone for a home recently completed a few doors down our street from us. We are NOT the subject of the video, but we ARE located nearby on the same street and the video gives a great overview of our location on "Little Balboa Island". We are the grey/white Cape Cod home with the round deck on the second floor, across from the house with the bright red awning. The red awning is a good marker for our home as you fly over our street.

There WAS also another link in our listing to a general video about Balboa Island, but VRBO has deleted it for some unexplained reason. It's less than two minutes long and gives you a quick overview of why Balboa Island is one of the best and most unique vacation spots in the world! I’m sure it, and many others like it, can still be found with a quick search on Google.

About Mark & Cindy

We both grew up back East, but have now lived in California for almost 30 years and both our children are natives. We always dreamt of living on Balboa Island, but only recently could figure out how to finance a home here. We've not been disappointed! The only difficult thing is leaving the Island from time to time...

Why Mark & Cindy chose Newport Center

You can decide for yourself, but "Little" Balboa is truly special. While part of what is commonly called Balboa Island, it is its own separate island across the "Grand Canal" and a second bridge. Originally planned to be a small island with casinos and hotels similar to Monaco; that concept did not prove feasible and more housing was added to Little Balboa Island in the 1920's instead. In fact, one of those charming houses, built in 1926, remains today just three doors down from us. Somewhere along the line, the residents of Little Balboa got together and agreed to bury utility lines and add miniature light houses, making the well-located island all the more beautiful. The main island can't seem to agree on how to do similarly, but we're rooting for them!

What makes this house unique

I spent my career as an institutional real estate investment advisor and know quality construction when I see it. Ours is a custom home built with the finest of materials and craftsmanship in 2004. This house was not built to be a "vacation rental"; it was built to be a primary residence. We have respected that philosophy by furnishing the home with the same orientation to quality and good taste.

This is not your basic "beach house" rental; we like to think it is casual coastal living with a designer's approach. If you are looking for a beach house to trash for a week with an owner that won't mind, please look elsewhere. We were young once, and raised two great kids, so we completely understand the process. However, are now at a stage of life where we take care of and enjoy quality finishes that are well maintained, and we hope you do too!

With all that said, if you like the finer things in life and respect other's belongings, you will LOVE our home and its location. Short of being ON the water, it does not get any better anywhere on the island. We are close to everything with water views, while on the nicest corner of the island, equi-distant and just steps to the water in three directions. One of those directions yields a public dock for fishing and/or boating.

Stunning place. Wonderful stay as always!

Little Island is our favorite place in Newport! Casa la Pina is such a beautiful home. It is appointed so nicely with top of the line amenities. It is situated on a lovely street very near the bay front and close to all that Newport has to offer. We had a wonderful time celebrating Mother's Day with our family and extended family. This home is so comfortable - a great place to relax and enjoy Balboa. The owners are so welcoming, friendly and kind. Can't wait for our next stay!

Wonderful - third consecutive year.

As always, the property was immaculate, fully equipped and easily accommodated our group of parents, grandparents, kids and grand kids.

Grandmother is wheelchair bound but this was not a problem here. Weather was great and enjoyed many hours on front patio, relaxing, utilizing the firepit on the cooler evenings. Owners, Mark and Cindy, work hard to make certain every need is anticipated.

Beautiful home in a great location

This home is well cared for and very clean. We had a family get together and parking on the street was not a problem. We could walk to town, to the ferry, and were just a few houses from the harbor. The owner was easy to communicate with and available if we had a question or a problem.

Our housekeeper, who has been with us for years, brings along her sister in the busy summer months and they do a tremendous job in just five hours between summer rentals when we are always sold out. You in turn left our house in great condition after your visit and that is much appreciated. We hope you and your family will return again in the future.

Incredible home and location on Balboa Island

Everything is right with this home: the location, the views, the home itself, the furnishings, the linens, the patios (there are three), the kitchen, the fireplaces, and the nearby amenities. Everything you could possibly want is at, in or near this wonderful home. It’s clear the owners’ take special care of this property.

For those that don’t know, this house is located near the southern bay front (the best waterfront views on the island) on “Little” Balboa Island. The “Little” Island is a separate island, attached by a bridge to the main part of Balboa Island, but is its own small island with the waterfront not much more than 100 yards away in any direction no matter where you are. On top of that, you’re close to Marine Avenue where all the shops and restaurants are located. It’s perfect!

We highly recommend this house and will be back for another visit soon...

Bliss on Little Balboa

What an amazing experience. This home was everything as described and so much more. The attention to detail, the lush linens, the coffee service, outdoor grill area, gourmet kitchen and the overall welcoming effect of the home were unsurpassed. Any child would have an amazing experience exploring the many rooms, rooftop deck and bunk room, the perfect home for a family, couple or friends. Location, location, location, the home is located on a quiet dead end street and walking distance to Balboa Island's shops and restaurants, just perfect! Our hosts/owners Mark and Cindy were an absolute delight helping us plan our stay, they treated us like family. 10 stars, they know how to do it right!!!

Perfect Weekend!

We rented this home on the Little Island for Memorial Day weekend, it could not have been better. The house is beautiful and equipped with everything you could want for a stay on the island. The location is perfect, easy access to the beach and so quiet. We had a fantastic time and will definitely return to this home.

Little Balboa, with its buried utilities and wider concrete streets, is the most desirable part of the well known 100+ year old Balboa Island. Our home is located just three blocks from the Island's "main street" where blocks of charming shops and restaurants are open year round. The southeast corner of the island means wide water views where all boats must pass to access the ocean. Take a short walk around Little Balboa's waterfront, or take the longer 2.7 mile walk around both Islands to enjoy fabulous views of the water, exclusive real estate, impressive yachts and interesting people.

Balboa Island is not far from the many other famous beachfront communities that surround it such as Corona Del Mar, Newport Beach's Balboa Peninsula, Huntington Beach and Laguna Beach. An abundance of shopping and dining is available in this cosmopolitan area that offers two major regional malls, an international airport, multiple village-type shopping areas and many famous beaches. As well, Disneyland is just 18 miles away! Oh, and Angels Stadium is slightly closer than that...

NOTE: We have recently added a YouTube video to our listing that was shot for a home being built just down the street from us. We are NOT the subject of the aerial video, but our street and home are seen frequently by the drone.
