Overview

About the property

4 Bedroom / 3.5 Bath Home that sleeps 10, with high-end finishes & furnishings.

Please read ANY of the more than 50 unanimous Five-Star reviews that we have received in just 2.5 years on VRBO; or sort by "Guest Rating" that ranks Casa la Pina #1 out of over 330 rentals that VRBO erroneously aggregates into a search for “Balboa Island” that includes property from Costa Mesa to Corona Del Mar and the Balboa Peninsula (NOT the island). RENTERS BEWARE: ONLY about 100 of these 330+ properties are actually ON Balboa Island!

Either method above tells the story of this exceptional 4 bedroom / 3.5 bath custom home with water views, just 50 yards from the waterfront in three directions, on the southeast corner of "Little" Balboa Island. Designed by noted local architect Ian Harrison and built in 2004, our Cape Cod home offers the best of Balboa Island. Located less than a quarter mile (3 blocks) from Marine Avenue where blocks of lovely shops and restaurants have been providing retail amenities to the area for more than 100 years.

Our home is NOT your basic worn & torn "beach rental" and may not be the best house for families with lots of young children. The property includes high-end design, construction, appliances, finishes and furnishings. We offer wide plank hardwood flooring on the ground level, nine foot ceilings or more throughout the house, a "state-of-the-art" 7.1 surround sound system with a 55" high definition TV in living room, as well as a three zone Nest-controlled air conditioning system (air conditioning is rare among vacation rentals on Balboa Island). An ELEVATOR is available for senior citizens (upon request) and there is a fully equipped laundry room with granite counters and a sink INSIDE the house. We also provide a large parking space in our attached garage that comfortably accommodates a full size car (opposite our own car that we usually leave covered in a very tidy two-car garage); AND there is abundant free parking on the streets of Little Balboa Island. As well, our home has a fully furnished rooftop deck on the third floor with an array of views of the water and Fashion Island on the mainland.

We call our home "Casa la Pina", or in English, “The Pineapple House”, and you will note the theme in our decorating. If curious, Google “pineapple meaning”, as the pineapple has been a sign of hospitality dating back to the days of the tall sailing ships when sea captains brought the tropical delicacy back to their northern homes and left them on their porch as a sign of their return and an open invitation for friends to visit. Pineapples were discovered by Christopher Columbus in the Caribbean on his first trip to the "New World" and they remain a symbol of welcome throughout Western Civilization today.

NOTE: The living and dining rooms of our home were refurnished and some pictures displayed on this listing do not depict current furnishings. We've not had a chance to have new professional photos taken yet, but rest assured, the new furnishings are of comparable, if not better, quality and taste to the ones you see!

LINENS & TOWELS: High quality sheets, bath towels, pillows, comforters and duvets, and beach towels, all professionally laundered, ARE provided.

FIRST-TIME RENTERS: Now that VRBO requires us to allow online booking, we only have 24 hours to review and approve prospective tenants that choose to book online and use a credit card. If you prefer this method, please provide background information with your online inquiry (where from, purpose of visit to Balboa Island, age of each person in your group, acknowledgement that you have NO smokers or pets in your group, etc...).

Please understand that we take great pride in, and care of, our property. Please review our listing in detail. Read ANY of our reviews. We promise you an exceptional rental experience, but want to know a bit about our first time clients, in advance, while hoping to build long-term relationships that are mutually beneficial.

AERIAL TOUR: We have added a link to an aerial video (from YouTube) that was shot by a drone for a home recently completed a few doors down our street from us. We are NOT the subject of the video, but we ARE located nearby on the same street and the video gives a great overview of our location on "Little Balboa Island". We are the grey/white Cape Cod home with the round deck on the second floor, across from the house with the bright red awning. The red awning is a good marker for our home as you fly over our street.

There WAS also another link in our listing to a general video about Balboa Island, but VRBO has deleted it for some unexplained reason. It's less than two minutes long and gives you a quick overview of why Balboa Island is one of the best and most unique vacation spots in the world! I’m sure it, and many others like it, can still be found with a quick search on Google.

About Mark & Cindy

We both grew up back East, but have now lived in California for almost 30 years and both our children are natives. We always dreamt of living on Balboa Island, but only recently could figure out how to finance a home here. We've not been disappointed! The only difficult thing is leaving the Island from time to time...

Mark & Cindy purchased this house in 2015

Why Mark & Cindy chose Newport Center

You can decide for yourself, but "Little" Balboa is truly special. While part of what is commonly called Balboa Island, it is its own separate island across the "Grand Canal" and a second bridge. Originally planned to be a small island with casinos and hotels similar to Monaco; that concept did not prove feasible and more housing was added to Little Balboa Island in the 1920's instead. In fact, one of those charming houses, built in 1926, remains today just three doors down from us. Somewhere along the line, the residents of Little Balboa got together and agreed to bury utility lines and add miniature light houses, making the well-located island all the more beautiful. The main island can't seem to agree on how to do similarly, but we're rooting for them!

What makes this house unique

I spent my career as an institutional real estate investment advisor and know quality construction when I see it. Ours is a custom home built with the finest of materials and craftsmanship in 2004. This house was not built to be a "vacation rental"; it was built to be a primary residence. We have respected that philosophy by furnishing the home with the same orientation to quality and good taste.

This is not your basic "beach house" rental; we like to think it is casual coastal living with a designer's approach. If you are looking for a beach house to trash for a week with an owner that won't mind, please look elsewhere. We were young once, and raised two great kids, so we completely understand the process. However, are now at a stage of life where we take care of and enjoy quality finishes that are well maintained, and we hope you do too!

With all that said, if you like the finer things in life and respect other's belongings, you will LOVE our home and its location. Short of being ON the water, it does not get any better anywhere on the island. We are close to everything with water views, while on the nicest corner of the island, equi-distant and just steps to the water in three directions. One of those directions yields a public dock for fishing and/or boating.

Stunning place. Wonderful stay as always!

  • 5 of 5

Little Island is our favorite place in Newport! Casa la Pina is such a beautiful home. It is appointed so nicely with top of the line amenities. It is situated on a lovely street very near the bay front and close to all that Newport has to offer. We had a wonderful time celebrating Mother's Day with our family and extended family. This home is so comfortable - a great place to relax and enjoy Balboa. The owners are so welcoming, friendly and kind. Can't wait for our next stay!

Want to feel spoiled? Rent this spectacular home!

  • 5 of 5

Casa la Pina is a beautiful, comfortable, gorgeously decorated house. We rented it for the weekend to celebrate my 50th birthday. Friends were able to stop by for a drink and a visit on the large patio. The house was very clean and well-equipped with everything we needed. We barbequed, used the outdoor shower to wash off the sand from the beach. Had a lovely dinner at the large dining table, etc. The beds are very comfortable. Mark and Cindy were lovely to work with as well. I cannot say enough wonderful things about this fabuous home!

Nothing short of amazing!

  • 5 of 5

Our stay last week at this incredible home was fantastic! My husband and I and our adult children came down for a visit for my husbands birthday!

When we first arrived, what stood out to me was the beautiful, safe and well kept neighborhood. It is an easy walk to the downtown area (it took me 5 minutes to walk there - yes, I timed it). The downtown is as cute as a button with loads of charming shops, good restaurants and people watching. Of course, you are surrounded by boats if you head the other direction Walks are a must!

But back to the amazing house....when I walked in, I literally let out a gasp. "It is a model home!" I exclaimed. The decor is subtle and classy. The house is named Casa La Pina, which means the house of the pineapple. The clever way Cindy and Mark incorporated pineapple's throughout the decor was wonderful (including pineapples on my bedsheets).

The kitchen, is massive and well stocked. We were so pleased that there were a variety of spices, functional and high quality equipment (like blenders and even a Kitchen Aid mixer!), there were nice touches like baggies and foil along with lighters for the outdoor fire pit, those things all came in handy. The plates and bowls were all high quality and it made our evening dinner party run so smoothly. We had some friends over and sat outside, drank wine, BBQ'd steaks on the very nice and clean outdoor gas grill and lavished in the moonlight while enjoying family.

We loved the large luxurious bedrooms with really nice soft 100% cotton Southern Tide sheets. The bathrooms were incredible with marble and granite, good water pressure along with fancy shower gel and warm fluffy towels. Did I mention the fireplace in the Master bedroom, OMG - yes, please!

We also took advantage of the two bicycles in the garage and rode to the ferry and had a glorious outing. The ferry was only $1.25 per person each way and was actually really fun to take.

For me, there is something about quality and value that make the things I do worthwhile. Everything that is included with the wonderful home made my stay really relaxing. I really appreciated not having to worry about the small details as they were already taken care of. To be honest, I didn't want to leave as I wanted to sit in the chair in the round turret balcony off the master bedroom and read. I can't wait to come back and stay again!

Thank you Mark and Cindy! Every detail was perfect!

Owner's Response: Wow Julia, how nice of you to spend so much time with such a thorough and complimentary review of Casa la Pina. I think you hit on just about every aspect of our home that we believe makes it a special place. Cindy and I DO sweat the “small things” that we hope differentiate our home from the rest of the lovely properties on Balboa Island. We’re glad you noticed! Thanks again for your business and impressive review. We hope you and Burd will visit again soon...

Perfect Beach Vacation Retreat

  • 5 of 5

We just loved our stay at Casa La Piña. All the previous reviews attracted us to this property and we were not disappointed. It does not feel like a rental property, it feels like a home, but it could be anyone's as there are no signs of who lives there beyond the "pineapple" theme in the decor. We got a kick out of discovering pineapple decorating items throughout the home - a nice touch and so much fun.

We are not the first to say it, but this home is the best there is on Balboa Island. It is a beautiful home in a great location near the village where all the shops and restaurants are located, but not too close. It's also very near the water on the southern bay front and the walkway that circles the island. The house itself is extremely nice and well maintained with everything you can think of in a luxury property. It is perfect & we intend to make this an annual family beach vacation retreat!

Owner's Response: Cindy and I are glad you enjoyed your stay at Casa la Pina on “Little” Balboa Island and appreciate your favorable review. You might be amused to know that we picked up the pineapple theme when we lived in New England many years ago. We thought its application to a Cape Cod home near the ocean was an appropriate use of the historic emblem of welcome and hospitality. We’ve enjoyed finding new, and frequently small ways, to use pineapple decor items throughout our home. We’re glad you got a kick out of it....

Excellent place to stay

  • 5 of 5

Absolutely perfect home. Very clean. Not a place for young kids because you are on a small island and close to neighbors. Also this house has recently been remodeled and has all new things. The owners got back with us right away with our questions. Beds r so comfortable, love the shower pressure and temperature. Kitchen is stocked with spices and great cookware. Great magazines to read while on the balcony. New bikes and backpack beach chairs we perfect for spending the day at the beach. Very organized. Love the fact the door locks with a code, so you do not have to worry about a key. Nice to have garage to park in.

Little Balboa, with its buried utilities and wider concrete streets, is the most desirable part of the well known 100+ year old Balboa Island. Our home is located just three blocks from the Island's "main street" where blocks of charming shops and restaurants are open year round. The southeast corner of the island means wide water views where all boats must pass to access the ocean. Take a short walk around Little Balboa's waterfront, or take the longer 2.7 mile walk around both Islands to enjoy fabulous views of the water, exclusive real estate, impressive yachts and interesting people.

Balboa Island is not far from the many other famous beachfront communities that surround it such as Corona Del Mar, Newport Beach's Balboa Peninsula, Huntington Beach and Laguna Beach. An abundance of shopping and dining is available in this cosmopolitan area that offers two major regional malls, an international airport, multiple village-type shopping areas and many famous beaches. As well, Disneyland is just 18 miles away! Oh, and Angels Stadium is slightly closer than that...

NOTE: We have recently added a YouTube video to our listing that was shot for a home being built just down the street from us. We are NOT the subject of the aerial video, but our street and home are seen frequently by the drone. Our home is the grey/white Cape Cod with the round deck on the second floor directly across the street from the house with the big bright red awning. The red awning serves as a good marker for our house as you fly around our corner of Little Balboa Island!
