Danny and Maria Mankin enjoy hiking, biking, going to movies and the arts. They own Begin Pilates, a Pilates and yoga business in Portland where they both teach. They love Portland and have many suggestions for great places to eat, hike and enjoy while visiting the City of Roses.
owner/property manager purchased this apartment in 1982
The power went out during our stay due to a winter storm so it was great that this place is largely heated by a gas fireplace which stayed on!
The location is great. It is close to many walkable places to visit and eat. It's on a quiet street and easy to get to major things like the airport, downtown and nearby areas. My wife and I could tell that the owners care well for the place as there were nice amenities and the place was in great shape.
When we first walked in, it smelled like the place probably had a cat at some point. Not sure how recently that was, but I could smell it. The water heater might be a small one. Fortunately, my wife and I showered together and noticed the hot water running out after a short while. Lastly, the wifi was spotty. I was working online from about 5a-7a and the internet would go in and out from time to time, bumping off the work I was trying to do. The thermostat in the bedroom was confusing. We didn't know what was supposed to be warm or hot and just ended up guessing.
With the "smoking" laws in Oregon recently being passed, it would be nice to know whether we are able to smoke inside the place or not.
Pretty much just saying what others have said as well. The apartment in a lovely neighborhood with lot's of restaurants in walking distance.
Danny and Maria had everything ready for us. Very clean and comfortable. Bathroom was stocked with everything we needed other than personal items (razor, contact lens holder etc). Same for the kitchen; dark roast coffee & half & half, even a chocolate bar! We didn't do much food prep but did order in a pizza one night when we were too lazy to run out to another restaurant.
Bed was very comfortable, the place is kept warm with a gas fireplace in the living are and electric heat in the bedroom.
We did have a power outage from a somewhat exciting afternoon/evening storm when a tree took out some power lines a block away. Danny had a candle and flashlight waiting for us on the front porch when we came in. Obviously out of the owner's control but they were very accommodating to make sure we were covered for the outage.
In summary highly recommended and we're looking forward to another visit!
We enjoyed our stay tremendously. Best king-bed ever! Kitchen well equipped to make breakfast or a meal.
Spacious, quiet and comfortable. We loved it! The neighborhood, with its beautiful houses is gorgeous. Portland's convenient public transport, that makes it easy to get around, is in walking distance. The provided food recommendations were spot on for us. All dealings with the owners were clear and pleasant. We can only recommend it.
Located in a lovely and quiet residential neighborhood, this guesthouse suited our needs perfectly. Danny gave us privacy while also responding quickly to us when we had questions. Well maintained property with amenities --the kitchen, washer/dryer, and off-street parking were a plus, and all the thoughtful little considerations -- band-aids, magazines about the Portland scene, notes about where to dine and walk in the neighborhood, coffee and coffee maker, and more. The bed was very comfortable. And there's a private sitting area on the back patio. We felt totally at home. It is close to Broadway street where we dined at Cadillac Cafe and Milo's City Cafe for breakfast. We have relatives now living in the Portland area and will visit again. This will be our No. 1 choice for overnight stays.
