Beautifully renovated duplex in Old Town. 2 bed/1.5 bath. Sleeps 4-6.

There is a private stairway to apartment/loft upstairs. Upstairs unit is a massive 1100 sq ft with cathedral ceilings and loft (2nd bdrm). There is a king bed in the master, full bed in the loft and a pull-out sofa. Fully furnished, high speed Internet, washer/dryer in unit, private entrance, garden and pool access. The unit has a large living area for entertaining as well as relaxing. There are air conditioners as well as fans to keep the space cool. Features new kitchen, original Dade pine, and two private porches. The front balcony offers wonderful views of the sunset colors in the sky. Pink plumeria trees cover the yard and provide shade over the pool.

The unit is in a central location within walking distance to most destinations. The neighborhood consists of mostly residential, vacation rentals and small businesses. Walking distance to Duval St. (7 blocks), grocery store (1 block), Higgs Beach (6 blocks), Smathers Beach (1.5 miles) and more. There's also a place to rent bicycles 1 block away.

The best way to see the island is by walking or riding a bike.

About Property Manager/Owner

We are an adventurous couple that loves to travel and meet new friends. We moved to Key West in October of 2013 and less than one year later we purchased this duplex where we live downstairs. The pool and garden area are new and of our own creation and imagination. Nothing is better than relaxing by the pool and watching the clouds through the many plumeria and palm trees.

Higgs Beach is 6 blocks away, Duval Street is 7 blocks away, and the famous Mallory Square is only 1.5 miles away. If you don't care to walk or bike, taxi's are readily available and inexpensive.

Bugs, Bugs and more Bugs.

On our first day in the rental we experienced bugs (termites) crawling on us while we were watching TV at about 7:00-8:00pm. On further inspection the apartment was swarming with termites coming in through the walls and windows faster than we could kill them. We packed up all our belongings and called the owner. The owner acted like we were making things up and when I told him that we were leaving and wanted a full refund, he said no and he would get a Pest Control person over tomorrow and we should go to a hotel for the night. The owner said he would pay for our night stay in the motel. We had to drive 50 miles up to Marathon Key to find a motel that would accept our dogs. The next day after driving back to Key West we found the Terminex man hadn't been there and the dead bugs we had killed were all over the place. The Terminex man said the owner had called for a Pest Control spray but not for Termite removal which was what was needed. Terminex man said what he was contracted to do would help some but until the entire house was tented and fogged for termites we would still see termites. I again contacted the owner and said we wanted our money back and wouldn't stay in a bug infested house. The owned said he contacted VRBO and that he was meeting his contract with us and he would not refund our money. I contacted the Key West Chamber of Commerce and complained and filed a complaint . Because the owner refused to refund our money, we stayed the full month of the contract and I contacted the owned multiple times about additional termite problems. The owner stated we would just have to live with it. He didn't offer any compensation except to pay for our motel stay on March1, 2017. I believe we should have been given at least a partial refund for all of out troubles and vacation days lost driving to get away from the termites. We lost two full days of vacation due to the termites. We had asked the people at the Key West Chamber of Commerce if we should have expected to live with bugs (termites) since we wanted to spend time in Key West. The stated "Absolutely not, our houses and apartments here in Key West should not have bugs in them if they are properly cared for."

The plexiglass in the windows of the home were held in with little plastic clips and had gaps of 1/8 to 1/4 inch gaps around the windows that contributed to the inability to keep bugs out. We would never recommend this property to anyone. VRBO please help us.

Owner's Response: We want every guest to have a wonderful visit to Key West and our home. We take great pride in our property and spend countless hours maintaining the space so that it is comfortable and enjoyable. On the day of arrival, you stated that you moved your luggage into the home and were extremely pleased with the accommodations. You contacted us hours later and you left Key West to stay in a hotel because we did not warn you of the natural occurrence of termite mating (swarming) which occurs for 2 days at a time without warning. We offered to pay for a hotel that evening and immediately contacted Terminix to inspect and treat the property. The previous renters that departed the same day did not see any bugs/termites in the apartment nor did the cleaning crew that came between the hours it was not occupied. The next day, you said you were not going back to the apartment for your monthly rental. You requested that all your money be returned or you were going to get our license revoked by the BBB and the Chamber of Commerce if we don’t refund you. We informed you we were doing everything we could to make your stay comfortable. We advised that we are being accommodating but you insisted you wanted a full refund and were driving home. Terminix went to the apartment and determined that can treat for termites but there is nothing you can do to prevent the swarming termites from coming in except for keeping the doors and windows closed, during dusk and dawn. They told you there’s no way to treat the swarms and they are not harmful to your dogs. VRBO reviewed our rental contract and they informed us that renters are not entitled to a refund given that this is a temporary natural occurrence (like rain or allergies). You decided not to stay in the house and filed a complaint with the Chamber of Commerce yet you returned to the property the same afternoon for the remainder of the month. We wanted you to enjoy your stay so we paid for the hotel the first night, hired Terminix to treat the property, and house cleaning service after Terminix was done. We have statements from both Terminix and the cleaning company that the few wings that were found were the only signs of termites on both the day of arrival and the following day. There have been no previous or current guests that have complained about the property. We encourage guests to research where they want to travel. Florida is not for everyone.

Great accommodations at a great price

We cannot say enough about the accommodations and the great response we received from the property owners regarding our needs. The second bedroom and bath upstairs were more than adequate. The main living area was spacious and beautiful and the view from the front porch was fantastic. The pool area was well maintained and the pool was refreshing. All this at a cost that was much more reasonable than other places we have stayed at in Key West. Terrific location too. Can't beat it.

Great Place

This place was a great find and I would recommend it to anyone that is interested in staying in KW. The host's were extremely accommodating and friendly. Clean and fresh.
