Situated in the Flint Hills just 2 miles from the west side of Manhattan, Kansas, Prairiewood's HomePlace offers exquisite guest lodging in a luxurious bed and bathroom suite, abundant amenities, and over 400 acres of Prairiewood's private tallgrass prairie preserve to explore. Tucked into the hillside along the wooded Wildcat Creek Valley, time spent here will awaken the senses, renew perspective, and inspire imagination.
With construction finishing Fall 2015, Prairiewood's newest lodging accommodations, HomePlace, allows for single bedroom rental. Nestled into the lower, north-facing side of an authentic timber-frame home, it exudes romance and abundance. Attached to the the personal home of the proprietors of Prairiewood Retreat & Preserve, these "casita style" rooms have completely separate entrances, with no interior door connection to the larger home making them comfortably private. The HomePlace offers spacious living quarters with spa-like features including oversized soaker tub, gas fireplace, and homey amenities including hospitality counter with mini fridge & microwave - and a patio with outdoor seating. And, HomePlace has direct access to Prairiewood's miles of hiking trails through the tall grass prairie and to our very own Walnut Pond picnic area where fishing and canoeing await. We fell in love with the Flint Hills tall grass Prairie when we each came to Manhattan to attend K-State. Now, some 20 years later after graduating from KSU, we have made the Flint Hills our home - and Prairiewood our labor of love. Together with our 3 children, we enjoy the charm of Manhattan living, KSU sports, and the great outdoors of this special place.

The dream and vision for Prairiewood began over 10 years ago. It all started with a simple vision for saving some of the native tallgrass prairie landscape in and around Manhattan, Kansas. Along the way, we became more and more compelled by the idea of using the prairie to provide a place where the values of the land can find their way into the hearts and souls of its visitors–a place where the senses are awakened, perspective is renewed, and imagination is inspired. We have worked diligently over the past 10 years to bring together all the pieces for such a place. We have acquired land surrounded by native prairie ecology, created exquisite accommodations and meeting space, blazed miles of walking trails, and assembled a staff of tremendous individuals. Now, after officially opening in January of 2010, the next chapter of our story is just beginning... Prairiewood is now a unique property set aside specifically as a prairie preserve to be offered for special events and uncommon lodging accommodations. Whether an individual seeking a place to rest and renew, a couple celebrating a special anniversary, a small friends group looking for a unique and inspiring place to meet/stay, or a board-of-directors requiring a state-of-the-art meeting room, Prairiewood won't disappoint. From our first-class, carefully appointed accommodations to our world class guest service, everything at Prairiewood has been thoughtfully assembled to create a truly one-of-a-kind experience.
Praireiwood is very versatile. It is intentionally intimate, unusually private, and thoroughly welcoming. While just next to town, there is feeling of being a million miles away. The prairie has a subtle yet profound beauty that tends to calm our nerves and inspire our dreams. We always feel refreshed after spending time there, whether waking the trails or sipping coffee on the patio. We take great pleasure in sharing this very special place which we so love.
Jim and I were lucky enough to stay in the Cottonwood Suite on the first leg of our trip out west, what a find!! The suite is absolutely beautiful, the decor/furnishings top-notch. We enjoyed a great drive to the National Tallgrass Prairie and a nice, long hike there. Manhattan is a fun town with great food! We had a truly marvelous dinner at Harry's, wonderful breakfast at The Chef Cafe and Jim was able to enjoy great donuts at Varsity. We are already planning the next time we will be able to come back to Prairiewood, what a wonderful, unique, happy place. Thank you so much for sharing your home and property with us.
We really enjoyed our time there. My husband and I visited to celebrate his birthday, our sixth wedding anniversary, and have some time together before I have surgery this week. We stayed in the Cottonwood Suite (the one with a King bed and tub in the room) and were BLOWN away at how romantic and cozy it was. The prairie grounds are just beautiful, and we enjoyed walking around them and discovering the pond. The only critique I would say is that the wireless is not very strong, and neither is the reception for cell phone service. We had to venture out to the lawn in order to really use either effectively, but that gave us a reason to be more private anyways. :) I would absolutely recommend this to anyone looking for a getaway in the Manhattan area. Just a few minutes from town, straight down Anderson to campus and Aggieville, and yet so secluded and quiet. The small details really made the stay for us-cookies on a plate inside the door, a handwritten note welcoming us, snacks and beverages for us to enjoy, the heated tile floors in the bathroom, etc. What a wonderful experience! We will be back the next time we get to get away just the two of us again! Thank you!
What a peaceful and absolutely beautiful spot to find myself tucked away for the weekend! As a "Blue Ridge mountain girl" at heart, I was able to experience the beauty of the prairie here and the sincere warmth and kindness of the people who reside in it! The room itself, was extremely comfortable. A cozy fire, hot coffee, whirlpool tub (surrounded by natural stone I might add!) and the heated floors of the bathroom were ideal to make me feel both pampered and refreshed! This visit, I experienced it as a place for some much needed down time/alone time, but it is ideal for a couple as well. I definitely recommend you visit and see for yourself---I know I will be returning!
