About the property

Historic Cabin Oozing W/ Charm, Perfectly Situated Between Lutsen & Grand Marais

Painted Rock sits perched on a quaint spit of Lake Superior ledge rock, halfway between Lutsen and Grand Marais, on the edge of Cascade State Park. This historic log cabin has been fully restored to retain all its original charm and history of bygone days, while updated with all the modern amenities. An unusually large Main Gathering Room is home to a wood-burning fireplace, dining table, game table, and picture windows that bring the Big Lake indoors in all seasons. The master bedroom has a Queen Bed and its private entrance directly onto the deck allows guests to fall asleep to the soothing sound of gentle lapping of waves. The bathroom is outfitted in spa-like fashion, with an oversized deep-soaker tub and heated floors. With a 2nd bedroom also outfitted with a queen bed - and a deluxe queen sleeper-sofa in the Main Room - Painted Rock can comfortably sleep 4-6 adults.

Outside, an oversized deck sits just a few steps off the ledge rock shore line. A pro-style gas grill makes for easy outdoor cooking and gathering. As idyllic as the Painted Rock Cabin is, the cabin itself is only the beginning...

Painted Rock is situated in the heart of the most legendary and spectacular section of the entire North Shore. Except for a few private parcels of land right along the Superior Shore, Painted Rock essentially sits in the middle of pristine Cascade State Park. Hundreds of miles of Sawtooth Mountains trails (hiking in the summer, cross-country and snow mobile in the winter), are accessible right out the front door of the cabin. Cascade Lodge & Restaurant is an easy 1/2 mile walk and features great food, drinks, and frequent live music. A trail leading to Cascade Falls is within 100 yards of Painted Rock's from door! And within a 30 minute drive, everything for which the North Shore is known is accessible... world-class hiking, fishing, kayaking, biking trails, skiing, galleries, restaurants, NorthHouse Folk School, and a vibrant live music scene. After all, Painted Rock sits in the heart of Cook County and Grand Marais - which was recently named the "Coolest Small Town in America"!

About Becky Katzenmeier

With both of us native to Kansas, we made our first foray to the Northwoods in 1994, shortly after being newly married. Little did we know that initial 5 night paddling trip, launched from the end of the Gunflint Trail outside of Grand Marais, would lead to a lifetime of pursuing the Northwoods and everything it represents. We now own and operate a Tallgrass Prairie retreat & preserve in the Flint Hills of Kansas, and we love the gentle beauty of the prairie - a sublime beauty the soaks slowly into your soul rather than a dramatic beauty that hits you upside the head!

We find the Northwoods to be similar in that regard. Whether the quiet lapping of waves again a rock shore, the distant haunting call of a loon, the silent rise of a full moon over Lake Superior, or the crackle of a wood fire on a frigid snowy night, we find the essence of the Northwoods to invigorate our hearts and spirits like nowhere else. We can't think of anything more fulfilling than sharing our little piece of the North with guests in hope that it will be as life-giving to them as it is to us. Welcome to Painted Rock!

Upscale Cabin Along Rugged Coast

  • 5 of 5

I retreat to the North Shore year after year to write. When I discovered Painted Rock, it was like something out of a movie set. A quintessential Northwoods cabin that hugs a rocky shoreline buffeted by waves. Halfway between Lutsen and Grand Marais and right on the edge of picturesque Cascade State Park, the cabin is perfectly situated for hiking, skiing or shopping, or enjoying one of the many restaurants in the area. The owners have a careful eye for high-end details -- tufted leather sofa that looks right out of a Pottery Barn catalog, a Miele refrigerator/freezer in the kitchen, a giant soaker tub in the bathroom, and Edison bulbs in interesting light fixtures throughout. Beyond the surprisingly luxurious interior in an otherwise unassuming log cabin, Becky has been terrific to work with on reservations and when the gas ran out in the heater, Patrick, who helps to maintain it, came right over and got a fire going just in time for the first snowfall of the season. Gas arrived a few hours later and I never had to worry about a thing. THEY put Painted Rock in a class all its own and have made me stay and return three times in just over a year. Can't wait to return!

Great Winter Getaway

Wonderful log cabin. Rustic but with all the comforts of home. Only negative is the early check out time of 10am. I'm not a morning person!

Painted Rock was what we hoped and then some!

  • 5 of 5

Painted Rock is cozy, comfy and absolutely charming. It looks rustic but feels anything but! And it's situated at the water's edge - we could hear the waves right outside while we slept. It is the perfect getaway -- my family and I loved staying here. We will definitely be back.

MEMORABLE!!!!

  • 5 of 5

This was my first trip to the North Shore. It was much more than what I expected. The area is absolutely breathtaking. I call it a combination of the rugged, rocky coast of Maine with the feel of being in the mountains of Colorado. The cabin at Painted Rock was the perfect setting in every way from the quaint feel to the amazing views. This cabin is so cool and comfortable that you can't help but open a good bottle of wine. Thanks for an amazing and memorable experience.

Rustic elegance

  • 5 of 5

This rustic, completely updated log cabin was the perfect place to stay on our fall trip to the North Shore. Every detail has been carefully planned, from the cabin restoration to the modern fixtures and appliances, everything was perfect. It's not too often you even see high quality matching silverware in a rental cabin. The only thing we needed to bring was food. The best meal of the stay was the steak and baked potato made on the equally nice Weber grill one night. The cabin sits right on Lake Superior and is just minutes from Lutsen, Grand Marais and all kinds of recreational activities. This trip was devoted primarily to hiking and fall color excursions. The chilly nights were welcome as we used the fireplace and lakeside fire pit most nights. Becky was great to work with from beginning to end. We will definitely be back in the future for another stay.

Superior Charm

  • 5 of 5

Driving out of 100 degree Kansas heat to Painted Rock Cabin in Lutsen, Minnesota, was quite a treat. Not only was the weather a huge improvement, Painted Rock turned out to be the nicest cabin we have ever stayed in. I remember in times past that cabins we would rent would be filled with mismatched kitchen equipment to linens to furniture. Not so at Painted Rock where every detail seems to have been carefully thought out from the small but lovely kitchen not only well equipped but beautifully appointed to the rustic native stone fireplace and comfortable and tasteful furnishings throughout. What we enjoyed most was sitting on the deck or in the anarondack chairs with a good book listening to the lapping water on the shoreline rocks of Lake Superior only a few feet away. Our few days of retreat there were treasured time thanks not only to the beauty of the surroundings but also to the comfort and charm of Painted Rock. We do so look forward to going again.
