About the property

Charming cabin on water's edge surrounded by majestic pines on quiet lake.

This part of Minnesota is a very well kept secret. If you are interested in a peaceful setting with unbelievable natural beauty, then your search has ended.

A stunning private property in the middle of the Chippewa National Forest, surrounded by 80-100 foot pines on 340 feet of lake shore on beautiful Caribou Lake. The lake is crystal clear with 45 foot clarity and 160 feet deep. Famous Caribou Lake boasts great fishing for Lake Trout, Bass and pan fish with trails for hiking. A row boat (with electric trolling motor), a sunfish sailboat, and kayak are all included with your rental. There are 2 private docks, one you can dock your boat at should you choose to bring one and another even more private swimming dock. The lake is typically glassy in the evening and is big enough to ski and tube on. Pass your playground love for tether ball on to your kids/grandkids or set up a family olympics of sorts with events such as bean bags, kuub (Swedish lawn game), croquet, ping pong, pool, and foos ball (all available on site).

What originally was an old lodge has recently undergone major updates and improvements including a new bathroom, kitchen, roof, furnace and windows. The walkout basement offers a super fun game room (pool, ping pong & foos ball) for rainy day fun or evening activities. Washer and dryer are also in the basement. Fresh linens and towels are provided for your stay. This cabin sleeps 8 comfortably with room for up to 10+ October-May. June through September rent the old lodge plus the seasonal guest cabin which is just steps away. The guest cabin boasts a new kitchen, new bathroom, 2 bedrooms, lake facing living room and a wonderful screened in porch. This is a perfect option for grandparents vacationing with their kids and families or larger groups. This cabin sleeps 6 comfortably.

Ample cross country skiing in the surrounding nature reserves or on the lake, snowmobile trails accessible from the driveway, fall color trails down the road and excellent ice fishing opportunities abound. Nearby Suomi Hills offers miles of groomed cross country ski trails suited for all levels. For a beautiful hike, simply head out the door.

Experience a part of Minnesota history that has all but disappeared. The state used to have ma & pa resorts at every turn. As new owners we are trying to hold on to a little bit of that history and share it with others who share a love and respect for the charm of a simpler time by restoring and preserving what used to be the center of one such place. So far we have restored what used to be the old lodge where guests would come for meals, games, and socializing. Now stay in the lodge with your family. We also have restored one of 2 seasonal guest cabins (cabin 2)..

They do not make cabins like this anymore and they couldn't if they tried. The old lodge and guest cabin are situated on close to 4 acres of land on 340 feet of private lake shore on pristine Caribou Lake. Quiet and relaxing for those seeking a real up north experience. This is the land of sky blue waters. There is wireless (but you don't have to tell the kids if you don't want to), but no t.v.. Playing board games, building forts, swimming, boating, roaming, card games, making s'mores fireside, napping, puzzles, catching frogs & minnows all become the new norm. We have updated the cabin and made this the perfect balance of comfort, history, charm and enjoyment. Once you visit you will be coming back often. We have absolutely fallen in love with Caribou Lake and the old Buckhorn property, we would love to share it with those that have a similar passion for the outdoors, appreciation of history, and love for charming old cottages and all that they encompass.

About Katie Archbold

We are a married couple with 3 school aged children living in the Twin Cities. Like the original owners of Buckhorn (this property), I grew up in Chicago. My husband is from southwestern Minnesota and we attended the University of St. John's and the College of St. Benedict. The original guest books are filled with visitors from all over, but Chicagoland and St. Paul more than anywhere else. If our lives weren't "rich" with hockey and volleyball we wouldn't miss a weekend up at the lake, regardless what time of year! We are passionate about the outdoors and about preserving a part of Minnesota's past.

Katie Archbold purchased this cabin in 2014

Why Katie Archbold chose Marcell

We rented this place and liked it so much we bought the place. The lodge reminds you of a different time in history when kids didn't sit on video games and television and enjoyed the beauty of nature. The original guest book from the 40's is still in the lodge and you can imagine the great times guests from the 40's and 50's had in this place. We hope you enjoy this place as much as we do, it is a hard place to leave when it comes time to go back to the real world. Our family has created some of the best memories ever at the Lodge, we hope you also enjoy.

What makes this cabin unique

You can't find this anywhere else. You will feel like you have been transported back in time but with the benefits of a new bathroom, new beds and new kitchen. Unlike some of the other beautiful more well known lakes in Minnesota, Caribou has only a handful of cabins on the lake. If 3 boats are on the lake at one time it is considered crazy busy. There is a dock to tie up a boat to should you bring one. Caribou is a quiet lake, we do not allow jet skis.

Guestbook comments from the owner

I could hardly tell that Tim and his group were in the cabin. The easiest guests ever.

Perfect escape

  • 5 of 5

I planned this vacation/reunion to celebrate my father's 70th birthday and we could not have been happier with our decision to rent this little slice of paradise from Katie and Pat. We were arriving from Dallas and Washington D.C. (by air to Minneapolis/St. Paul) and Chicago (by car). Buckhorn Lodge is about 3 ½ hours north of the Twin Cities but, a very easy drive.

Here you will find two beautiful, welcoming and cozy cabins. We were a group of eight – two children and eight adults. Later in the week we were joined by four more family members so there were twelve of us! There was plenty of space to relax with others or get away on a morning kayak excursion, swim at the newly completed beach, play cards, croquet or Kubb, take a hike or a nap! In our case, we rented a pontoon boat (in Grand Rapids) and the kids – and some adults! - had fun tubing on the lake. Our nine and seven year- olds fished from the pier where the water is so pristine the fish are visible darting here and there close to shore. Both children caught fish (released) and were thrilled.

I especially enjoyed being the first up in the morning and with coffee in hand sitting on the pier seeing the mist rising over the lake. On the first morning, a beaver swam not more than ten feet from the pier! Next morning, I observed a bald eagle swoop low over the water grasping a fish in its talons. The heron sat each day on the “rock” and we all loved hearing the calls of the loons! Enchanting!

In the evening we gathered in the main cabin for a family dinner – nothing elaborate – we were on vacation! Then s’mores around a campfire and perhaps a story or two. In the lower level of the main cabin are a pool table, ping pong table, darts and other games available. We played euchre and enjoyed a beer or two.

Our week ended too soon and we all agreed that a return visit is a must! Thank you to Katie and Pat for making this a beautiful and memorable trip for all of us.

There are no adequate words....

  • 5 of 5

But I'll try! First, you need to know that Katie is incredible to work with; she and her family made ours feel like we've known one another for years. I cannot say enough about the amenities, comfort, and beauty that is Buckhorn.

Our family of nine had a week of (mostly) disconnected bliss that ended much too soon. The lodge and cabin are inspiring, cozy, and large enough for nine people to spread out and read, snooze, or play an intense game of ping pong--while still feeling like the family is spending quality time together. I don't think anyone even noticed there wasn't a TV until our fifth night there...and there were no complaints about it, even then. The lake is beautiful, kayaks and canoe super fun, and the fire pit absolutely perfect for roasting marshmallows and hanging out at night.

The game room in the basement was pure heaven for three teenagers and a five-year-old. Okay, and the adults. We made great memories organizing both ping pong and bean bag tournaments.

Again, my words don't do justice. Buckhorn is incredible--unlike anything you'll find out there. We were so lucky to find this location on Homeaway and are looking forward to returning. Thank you so much for your careful renovation of such a wonderful place!

Fabulous adorable vintage perfection.

  • 5 of 5

This place is amazing and harkens back to days long past when mom and pop lodges and resorts dotted the landscape all over Minnesota. Coming to Buckhorn Lodge is like walking back in time only to find it blissfully more luxurious.

Katie and Pat are preserving something precious here and you can feel it. From the giddy inducing down comforters to the Scandinavian hand towels Buckhorn is the perfect homecoming for cozy, joy-inspired, love drenched goodness.

You should probably stay here.

Owner's Response: Sara, It was our absolute pleasure to host you and your family and friends at Buckhorn! It is super gratifying to hear from guests that appreciate and "get" what we are trying to accomplish by attempting to bring this old place back to life. We hope you will continue to be a part of our journey and return to see the improvements and restoration that is planned for the future. Without people like you it would/will not be possible. We are so grateful for your kind review! Thank you!!!!!!! Best, Katie & Pat

Perfect nostalgic lake cabin experience

  • 5 of 5

The Old Buckhorn Lodge on Caribou Lake is alive and well, brimming with charm, class and remembrance of bygone days. The 5 sisters in my family enjoyed our weeklong stay interspersed with visits from nieces and grand nieces. The lodge and extra guest cabin provided a perfect venue for multiple guests with many rooms and spaces and activities to keep everyone happy ,active , and relaxed. The beds and linens and towels made us all feel a little pampered and the master suite was amazing, we called it the queen for a day room. The kitchen was well equipped for everything we cooked and it was large and friendly. The long table provided a perfect spot for stories and laughter. It rained one afternoon and the main room sparkled in the firelight while we played cards and worked puzzles. Caribou lake was magnificent. Deep and cool, clear and refreshing. It came complete with a small island, fantastic sunsets, and two pairs of Loons to make the music. We spent the week messing with boats and swimming, playing games in the rec room and making memories of a lifetime. Would highly recommend this spot for anyone who loves the Northwoods and wants to recall how beautiful it is. Wonderful hosts, the Archibolds went the extra mile to ensure our perfect vacation.

A Slice of Heaven!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I just spent three days at Katie and Pat's cabin and cannot say enough how much we loved it. The cabin itself was perfect, there wasn't one thing that we "needed" and didn't have. They have thought of everything when it comes to making sure their guests are comfortable. Both Katie and Pat were very helpful and prompt in communicating prior to our stay. When we arrived the light was on, the cabin was warm and we immediately felt like we were at home.

We highly recommend this property to anyone who is looking for a place to get away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. The lake and surrounding area is beautiful and very peaceful, it felt like we had the whole lake to ourselves.

Thanks to both of you for making this treasure of yours available to share with others, we WILL be back!
