Overview

About the property

Stunning 3BR, 21/2 bath lakefront home with to-die-for view of lake & mountains

A fabulous vacation retreat on Loon Lake north of Saranac Lake. Enter and pass through a modern fully equipped kitchen and half bath into an Adirondack Room with a cathedral ceiling and large picture windows looking out over spectacular Loon Lake and the mountains beyond -- the best view on the lake.

Explore the ground floor master bedroom with its private bath and the two upstairs bedrooms and their bath and then venture outside and down the path to the dock and marvel at the clarity of the water. At the dock a canoe and single person kayak are waiting to take you on boating adventures.

Meanwhile the rest of the family will have made its own discovery, a fabulous treehouse located a hundred feet up the hill from the front door. The treehouse, built in Adirondack style three years ago by Master Craftsman, Nate Parsons, is an architectural masterpiece.. Access is by a not-too-difficult climbing wall. Here the kids, or the whole family, can spend hours in the trees or pitch a tent and spend the night.

After you have settled in you can make your plans for the rest of your stay --hiking on family friendly Crusher Mountain or more difficult Loon Lake Mountain. There are dozens of hikes to choose from. Or you can go out on the lake, canoeing or kayaking. You can fish the lake or the Saranac River. And if you are so inclined you can do a little shopping in Saranac Lake or Lake Placid. Whiteface Mountain, the Wild Center in Tupper Lake and the Adirondack Carousel in Saranac Lake are reasonable car rides away.

But maybe you would prefer to curl up in the Adirondack room in front of the fireplace and just relax and enjoy.

About Craig Johnstone

The owners are Craig and Silke Johnstone and their nine year old daughter. Craig is a retired US Ambassador currently sitting on three non-profit humanitarian boards. Silke is an executive at the Boeing Company. They live in Seattle but spend a good portion of every summer and most winters at Loon Lake. The large Adirondack style tree house belongs, of course, to our daughter. Entry to the treehouse iss by a not-too-hard climbing wall.

Craig Johnstone purchased this house in 2011

Why Craig Johnstone chose New York

You can't not love this property once you see the view of the lake and the mountains or walk the hiking trails. It is well worth our many commutes from far-away Seattle.

What makes this house unique

Whether you are looking for solitude, outdoor sports or a walk in the wilds of the Adirondacks this is your perfect base.

Notes:
Hiking: There is a short hike suitable for supervised children age 5 and above at Crusher Mountain overlooking Loon Lake. The trail begins in a little clearing on the side of Route 26. If features a ledge with a very nice view of Loon Lake. Parents must supervise children on the trail and, in particular on the ledge which has a steep dropoff. To get to Crusher mountain take a left out of the driveway and drive or walk about a mile to a clearing on the left. The trail is marked with ribbons. The clearing is just before getting to Mensick Road (Kushaqua Pond Road) A longer and more difficult hike is up Loon Mountain. Again just take a left out of the driveway on Route 26 and keep going until you get to the Loon Mountain Trail pullover. It is a fairly long hike. Allow three hours round trip. There is an abandoned fire tower at the summit. This can be managed by children age 10 and above but expect some complaints as this is a tougher hike.

Great location on a pristine lake

  • 5 of 5

We had a fabulous time at Loon Lake in this beautiful well provisioned home! The home is on a very private lot situated on a bluff above the lake. There are great views of the lake from the large deck. There is a new Weber grill on the deck. A short walk (about a minute) down a trail brings you to a dock with a kayak and a canoe. There is good swimming off of the dock. We enjoyed two hikes during our week stay. One hike up Loon Lake Mountain and another up Debar mountain. Both hikes were medium difficulty with spectacular summit views. Our two reccomendations are to fix the sliding door from the dining room onto the deck. It is very difficult to open and close. Also it is difficult to launch the canoe into the lake due to its weight and location. Other then these minor issues, this is a terrific home and a great value.

Beautiful house on a quiet lake

  • 4 of 5

We stayed in this house for the first week of July, for a family vacation. This was our first time in the Adirondacks. We enjoyed hiking, exploring the area, and then returning to this peaceful retreat. The house itself is beautiful, and Loon Lake is quiet, about 3 miles in length, with few houses on its shores -- perfect for paddling. The house comes with a kayak and a canoe. My only complaint is that the walk down to the shore is rather steep, and the kayak and canoe are kept on a platform a good distance from the water, so getting them down to the dock and into the water isn't easy. It took a couple of strong people to get them down the path, down the steps to the dock, into the water, and then back again after each trip. Otherwise, everything about this house is perfect.

Outstanding View and So Relaxing

  • 5 of 5

This first time trip to Loon Lake was a treat. The view from the wrap around deck is simply spectacular. We stayed during the fall and the colors from the adjacent mountains were wonderful. We were able to carry our kayaks down the well maintained trail from the home to the lake. Loon Lake is very nice for kayaking. It was both peaceful and beautiful. We enjoyed trips to both Saranac Lake and Lake Placid, which are an easy drive. The home was clean, roomy, and spacious. We enjoyed the outdoors, the deck, playing games, and making memories with family. We are thankful for the owners sharing their beautiful place.

Well appointed, great views, spacious, good swimming and boating

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time. The house has great views indoors and out, a big deck, and a very nice path down to the lake, where there is good swimming and boating access.

The living space is spacious, with two large comfortable couches, a dining table that is comfortable for 8, and a well-appointed kitchen.

The caretaker is easily reached and super nice and competent.

There is good fishing and excellent hiking in walking and paddling distance, and lots more hiking and fishing if you are willing to drive to it. There essentially no urban amenities (including cell phone access) within a half-hour's drive. This is fine with us, but may not be to everyone's taste.
