Gulf Dreams on-the beach has been completely renovated, inside and out, beginning in June 2011 and completed in June of 2014. A recent renovation added a bathroom on second floor and a totally renovated first floor poolside bedroom and bath. Guests will find it to be extremely well-equipped and furnished with high-end finishes and fixtures. The comfort of the house, coupled with the best location on the island, and the convenience of having a private dock, set the scene for a memorable vacation.
We are retired in the Texas Hill Country. In the 15 years that we've owned Gulf Dreams on-the-beach, our family has had many memorable times with family and friends enjoying all that the house and the island have to offer. In June 2015, we decided to offer Gulf Dreams on-the-beach for vacation rentals for the first time.
Stewart & Lucy purchased this house in 2000
Having spent winters in Florida in the late 1940's with my family to escape Michigan's severe weather, I have fond memories of the sparsley-populated Florida beaches we enjoyed. North Captiva Island rekindled these memories with its 2 miles of wildlife refuge and pristine beach just south of Gulf Dreams on-the-beach's private beach. We were living in Denver when we first rented a house on North Captiva and fell in love with the 1940's Florida atmosphere there. After 7 years of renting on the island, we decided to buy our house, and have never regretted our decision. Over the 15 years that we've owned Gulf Dreams on-the-beach, the house has hosted many of our family and friends for a unique island vacation experience.
Views of the Gulf of Mexico from the 3rd floor lanai, where we eat all our meals, weather permitting, and from the 4th floor master bedroom are awesome. The lush tropical landscaping, especially around the heated pool and remotely controlled waterfall, helps create the quiet serenity and privacy that make Gulf Dreams on-the-beach special. The ability to launch kayaks (6 are provided) into the Gulf of Mexico from Gulf Dreams' private beach and go out and shelling at the offshore island and in the state park and observe the abundant sea life these waters offer. Some of our best memories are riding bicycles (6 are provided) through the wildlife preserve onto the deserted beaches of the south two-thirds of the island for premier shelling, as well as observation of wildlife. Our motto is: "We will do everything possible to see that our guests have a quality experience", and we take this seriously, from the moment our guests set foot on the island to the moment they depart. Our house manager (who live on the island) ensure that all our guests needs are met, and they go above and beyond what is required.
We just spent a wonderful Thanksgiving week with family at Gulf Dreams. The house is absolutely amazing and everything you could ask for in a rental house and much more. It really feels like a home and is also the most well-equipped house you’ll ever rent. We were 6 adults and 6 kids (ages 1-8) and there was plenty of room for everyone. We ate most meals at the house, the kitchen was so well equipped, it made cooking for a large group so much easier. The house was great for kids, equipped with cribs, high chairs, and baby gates and lots of space for exploring. The location is amazing, just a short walk down the wooden walkway and you’re at a beautiful sandy beach. The pool was perfect for lounging in the afternoons. Everyone used the kayaks, there’s a sandbar right off the beach in front of the house that was fun to paddle out to and look for shells. The views from the main floor and the master bedroom are beautiful and the sunsets are not to be missed. The island is really beautiful and peaceful. I’ve never seen so many dolphins so close to shore, such a cool sight! Having the golf carts to get around was an adventure in itself and made getting around with the kids easy and fun. We picked up groceries for the week in Cape Coral before hopping on the ferry, others ordered them ahead and had them delivered to the ferry. There is not much available on the island and what they do have is pricey, so plan ahead. We had Thanksgiving catered by Leslie Adams at Sanibel/Captiva Catering. She was a pleasure to work with and the food was delicious. She brought the food to the ferry and we picked it up on the other end, worked out great for such a large group of us. The first floor bedroom is pretty separate from the rest of the house. Although nicely redone and with a full bath and small fridge, you do have to use the outside stairs to access the main part of the house. Overall we had an amazing week at Gulf Dreams and highly recommend it to anyone with a large group looking for a fun, relaxing getaway. We look forward to staying there again someday!
Simply amazing vacation. North Captiva is great location to simply relax and enjoy the island. Gulf Dreams was beautiful home that gave you the seclusion and privacy. The ability to enjoy the beach, kayaking, shell hunting, snorkeling, and watching dolphins, manatee and the tortoise was so enjoyable for all ages. The grounds of the Gulf Dreams was planned out so well, the trees, plants and landscape lighting was magical. The home was very well equipped to meet all our needs throughout our stay. The service that property managers, Laurie and Duncan was provided was great, they went far beyond the basic service to assist us. Want to thank Stewart and Lucy for sharing your home, it was excellent location for our small intimate wedding for our daughter. I would highly recommend Gulf Dreams.
great week at beautiful house . large family this house has no problem handling. great staff handling house
was quite fabulous! None of us wanted to return home, back to the harsh reality of traffic and chaos of living in a big city like Dallas. Your home on the island is perfect for our family of five plus a few friends. GD’s location was the best on the island with the dock right down the road...the lush vegetation, the beach and pool area, is so very well thought out. All of it feeling very secluded and privately tropical, as if we were in another country. Our family fell in love with North Captiva...it reminded us a lot of our favorite place on earth, Costa Rica. Laurie, Duncan and their team took very good care of us all, going above and beyond. Thank you so much for everything. We wish you and your’s all the best!
Gulf Dreams on the Beach was an absolute paradise, and North Captiva was a dream. The house was perfect for our group...11 travelers ranging in age from 5 to 85!! There were plenty of beds and plenty of places to spread out and have some space. The house is beautifully decorated, but in a comfortable way that doesn't make you afraid to touch everything. The landscaping is lush and tropical. Everything is beautifully maintained and any problems that do arise are taken care of in short order by Duncan and Laurie. The beach is pristine. The water is clear. The sunsets are amazing. There are shells everywhere...especially around the small sandbar that is easily accessible by kayak. The house is well equipped with beach toys, chairs and umbrellas...and everything was in great condition and of high quality! Not what I've come to expect from the beach supplies generally provided by rental houses.
We ate out a couple of times while we were there...the restaurants aren't exactly top star, but are certainly adequate. It took our kids a couple of days to adjust to the fact that there was "nothing to do" on the island, but they soon fell into the island rhythm and we all enjoyed a slower paced, more unplugged vacation. Reading, swimming, playing games together...it was a truly special time of relaxation and reconnecting.
If I had one suggestion for the owners and management company, it would be to take a look at the timers on the irrigation system. They seemed to always go off in the early evening while we were trying to enjoy a swim in the beautiful pool after dinner. Because the irrigation water is of course not filtered, it really smelled pretty bad while we were out there. Less than pleasant for sure. We spoke to Duncan about it and he attempted to adjust it, but it never really got any better. A very small complaint in the overall scheme of things.
I would absolutely recommend Gulf Dreams on the Beach to anyone looking for a completely relaxing, low key, beach vacation.
Gulf Dreams on the Beach is a beautiful home on a beautiful island. It is wonderful to not have to travel far to be detached from the chaos of normal everyday life. The home has everything you need to relax and unwind. If you find yourself needing anything, you can reach out to the house managers and they are able to help you with just about anything.
The kitchen is very well equipped and there is plenty of refrigerator space. The house has filtered water so drinking from the tap is safe and good. Both refrigerators have filtered water as well so there is no need to bring cases of bottled water just a refillable water bottle.
There is a sand bar only about a quarter mile away from the beach right in front of the house so kayaks will be put to good use. Be sure to pack your mask and snorkel so you can get some really beautiful shells. There are many manatees and dolphins that will swim by while you are relaxing on the beach, very peaceful environment. Of course there is nothing that can compare to the view when the sun sets every evening, very breathtaking views from the porches of the house or right on the beach.
The people who live and work on the island are very friendly and welcoming. Our experience was great from start (communication with the owners prior to booking) to finish and we would recommend this vacation to everyone.
North Captiva Island is a bridgeless barrier island, about 3 miles long, accessed only by boat or private plane. Two-thirds of the island is a natural wildlife preserve with hiking and biking trails and remote beaches, while the remaining one-third consists of houses and sand roads. Transportation on these roads is by golf carts only; no automobiles are allowed. Uncrowded, pristine white sand beaches are unrivaled for sunbathing, swimming, launching kayaks, biking, shelling, hiking and fishing. It's reminiscent of Florida in the 1940's before it became a crowded tourist mecca.
