New, beautiful small house, however.....

  • 4 of 5

The house was very nice and brand new, but small. There was very little furniture--only a bed and night stand in each bedroom (which meant there was no place to put suitcases except the floor or the window sill, and we had to live out of the suitcases); a small sofa, coffee table and kitchen table & 4 chairs in the main room (since there were 4 of us, we had to bring in chairs from the porch so we could all sit down somewhere other than on the kitchen table chairs). There were very few dishes & cookware. We really needed a mixing bowl or 2 and could have used a few more dishes and cooking utinsels. Also, the house was located about a 15-20 minute drive out of Homer and the closest restaurant was closed. The street number sign really needed to be displayed better--even with good directions, we drove right past it.

The 4 of us didn't really love the place, but liked it. The view was as spectacular as in the photos and there were a lot of little birds around. We were also very grateful to find a place this nice on very short notice--our VRBO rental in Homer was cancelled by the owner less than 2 weeks before our arrival.

House has water issues!

  • 2 of 5

We worried we would run out of water. We have lived on a well before and this property has signs warning you that they have to hall in water! The kitchen was not very well stocked for cooking! I.E (no bowls) for making pancakes. No wine bottle opener. Without a smart phone or GPS this property is very difficult to find. The view is pretty from the back deck.

There is no cable or satellite!

Owner's Response: With regards to water issues, signs are posted to ask guests to be conservative because we do haul water. There is always more than sufficient water for any of our guests. We have tried to keep the kitchen well stocked. Additional kitchen items will be added for the upcoming season. All guests have been and will be provided with a detailed map on the location of the Gingerbread House.

Attractive new house in an incredible location

  • 5 of 5

Don't let the name fool you. The Gingerbread House is not an older Victorian house. It is a new structure with large windows, lots of natural light, high ceilings, open space living , new appliances and furniture -- and an unbelievable view. (Just as the photo depicts.) The house was both clean and comfortable. (Great beds.) Although the house is eight miles from Homer, the drive is both easy and beautiful. There are houses in the area, but they are not close. As a result, we felt secluded but not isolated -- perfect! (One day a moose and her calf browsed right in front of the house.) We would spend time in Homer, but were always happy to be back at the Gingerbread House. Stock up on groceries on your way to the house from Homer, but if you forget something, just stop by the Fritz Creek Store. Even if you don't forget something, stop by the Fritz Creek Store. Not only is it authentic, it carries a small but decent collection of wines and the deli serves great sandwiches, pizzas and, above all, baked goods. Miscellaneous thoughts: 1. Secure a discount card from the SavWay (I think) grocery. You'll find them throughout the state, so if you're driving and Home-awaying, get a card early. You'll save on groceries and liquor. 2. Enjoy eating out, but also buy fresh seafood and fix it at the house. You'll save a little and you can savor your meal while savoring the view. 3. Do not miss Anchor Point for eagle watching. . We were there when the tide was out and counted 14 bald eagles on the sand at one time. We really enjoyed our time in Homer, and the Gingerbread House contributed greatly to our experience.

Perfect home away from home.

  • 5 of 5

While in town for family events with our children a hotel wasn't going to work. This was perfect! We could cook, get cleaned up, our kids could play without bothering anyone. It was very quiet and private with a beautiful view! Perfect place to come back to after a busy day and relax.

Brand new clean house with Kachemak bay views

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the Gingerbread house for five nights in July 2016. The house is brand new and very clean. The bathroom was spotless. Each room has high ceilings and its own heater. The main room is expansive with abundant natural light. We had our meals on the back deck enjoying the bay view. The house is very private and very quiet. We had no problem driving to the Homer spit and also to the Russian village at the terminus of East End road. The views from East End road and also from nearby Skyline road are incredible. We took Mako water taxi to Glacier spit for a hike to Grewingk Glacier Lake at the base of Grewingk glacier. The scenery was heavenly. We saw humpback whales and sea otters en route. The Gingerbread house is within a mile of Homestead restaurant which had an excellent sablefish (also known as black cod or butterfish) entree. Fritz Creek grocery had delicious hummus as well as duck noodles with the most tender duck that I have ever had.
