About Michelle Dodd

The owners, Michelle and Barbara, visited a friend in Los Zacatitos in February of 2015 and instantly fell in love with the area. As busy, working residents of the San Francisco Bay Area, it was the first vacation we'd taken in a long time that was truly relaxing. We loved that the commercial element of vacationing is absent in Zacatitos, yet you can easily get to San Jose or Cabo by car if desired. The beauty of the area spoke to us, and we knew we wanted our own place there. We envisioned it being the perfect place to create memories and spend quality time with friends and family for years to come. After owning the house for nearly three years we couldn't be happier with our choice, and we're delighted that our rental guests consistently enjoy all of the things we love about the property as well.

Michelle Dodd purchased this house in 2015

Why Michelle Dodd chose Los Zacatitos

When we went back to Zacatitos to shop for property, our intent was to buy a vacant lot and build a house. While that would have been a good plan, we're thankful that our realtor had the good instinct to show us what soon became our Hacienda by the Sea. The property had everything we wanted; a beautifully situated lot over an acre in size, panoramic ocean views, mountain views, easy access to the beach, a main home thoughtfully designed in the southwestern architecture that we love, and a private casita for guests.

What makes this house unique

What makes this property special is that it has breathtaking views of the Sea of Cortez, as well as the surrounding desert mountains. The house is ideally located on large 1.4 acre lot, sensitively landscaped with native plants, and offers privacy and tranquility. It's just a short walk to a beautiful swimming beach, so we have the benefit of being near the water while also having peace and quiet when we're at the house.

This property was built for indoor/outdoor living. The main house has a sweeping front porch, shaded from the sun but with a direct view to the water. It was designed to be a place for friends and family to gather, lounge, dine outdoors, or get in a good workout swimming in the spacious 20yd lap pool. Grab a book and lie in the hammock or on one of the built in lounge platforms while you read, siesta, or enjoy the view.

The roof of the main house offers an additional gathering area, with a built in dining table as well as a 300 square foot lounging area shaded by a newly constructed palapa. The views from the rooftop couldn't be any better, whether you're enjoying a sunrise or sunset, whale watching, or just lounging in the cool afternoon breeze.

Fantastic House

  • 5 of 5

We stayed 2 weeks at this lovely property! We had a party of 5 and there was plenty of space for everyone (sleeping or just hanging out around the house). The covered outdoor living space was expansive and so relaxing. You can see the ocean and the mountains from the roof top seating area. We had many breakfast meals up top. The sunrises and sunsets are amazing there, and it was great to have such a comfortable space to watch both. I think it's unusual to have a property that catches both the sunset and sunrise in this area!! We loved this space!! I would highly recommend this house to anyone. The home owners were really easy to get a hold of and replied to emails quicker than I would even check my inbox! Thank you for making our family Christmas so memorable!

Simply perfect

  • 5 of 5

This is exactly what we were looking for! Something off the grid, and safe. This place couldn't have been any better, as far as views, perfect location. All the neighbors take care of each other, and super friendly! The only thing I might suggest, though people I'm sure rent this for a reason. However maybe a smart TV, so those can watch a Netflix or Hulu off their own account. There are a few nights we were so relaxed we wanted to end the night with a good movie, other than that we plan on coming back again next year!, with a couple of friends we think will enjoy this escape

Heaven for Whale Watchers

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved our week-long stay at Los Zacatitos. It's a world apart from the madness of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo, and yet we could get to a big grocery store within half an hour if we needed to. The house is small--perfect for a couple--and both tastefully decorated and well-equipped--but the outside spaces are twice as large and we spent most of our time there. The rooftop palapa with its cushioned seating is the perfect place to sit every morning and watch whales--which we saw every day, multiple times--and the outdoor daybeds were our favorite place to lie in the shade and read. You have to be careful about water and electricity use, but we quickly adapted and were grateful for the good wi-fi connection. Although we didn't use the adjoining casita, it seemed like the perfect place for kids to stay (or for anyone who doesn't need to get up in the middle of the night to use the second bathroom, which is a distance away). We went to a different section of beach every day and were almost always the only ones there. Having Zac's Bar & Grille right in the neighborhood was a godsend, and we ate dinner there several times. The lap pool is gorgeous and we thought we'd use it more, but the chilly evenings meant cold water and we never got beyond the shallow end. We were visited daily by the wild burros, who kept us amused with their braying, and the bird life was varied and plentiful. We would love to return to this place some day.

Excellent! We will return!

  • 5 of 5

We would rate it 5 Stars. The setting was perfect. The Casita and Main Home were well

provisioned and the setting was very private. Walks on the beach and swimming in the ocean was great. Two of us utilized the lap pool and it was clean and provided an excellent work out.

Zac's, & restaurants down at La Marina were tasty. The road to Zacatitos is much improved. Asphalt almost all the way.

Don't forget to go to Flora's for breakfast brunch or

lunch. It is all organic and the gardens are amazing.

Great house, great location

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at this little house! It was myself, husband and our 14 month old daughter for one week. The house itself was comfortable and well equipped. We ate 90% of our meals there and were grateful for the stocked kitchen and grill. The outdoor areas of the home are just great. We spent a lot of time lounging by the pool, looking at the ocean. We saw lots of whales breathing, which was pretty magical. We could see returning with another couple and taking advantage of the casita.

The beach is just a five minute walk away. It was a great beach and most days we saw nobody there! Practically a private beach, so we never drove to spend time at any other beaches. We went to the Organic Market on Wednesday morning, which was quite small, but worth it because the bakery was open. We had one meal at Zacs, which was pretty good, but also recommend the short drive to Buzzards, which was very tasty.

Michelle was a fabulous host. We appreciated her guidance on grocery shopping before arrival and getting a 4wd car. She helped us with sone other driving directions too. She even found someone who will cook meals and bring them to the house for us (highly recommended!). We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would return.

'Neath the Mexican Sky

  • 5 of 5

This was our first time visiting the Baja Peninsula. We were so glad we decided to stay at Zacatitos to escape the crowds in San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas. The house is beautifully situated, just a 5 minute walk to the beach. The interior is tastefully decorated with rustic Mexican decor and the bed extremely comfortable. The kitchen was well equipped and had a nice supply of oils/spices and even a bit of tequila. We loved all the outdoor sitting areas but especially enjoyed the palapa (roof-top deck) for our meals and beverages. The view is magnificent with the ocean to one direction and the peaceful desert valley to the other direction. Our two teenage sons slept in the adorable casita which was a perfect setup for us. Our family enjoyed running along the dirt road that runs along the unspoiled ocean coast for miles in either direction. One day for lunch we took this road to a cute family-owned restaurant called Buzzards. In the desert we saw numerous burros and from the palapa we saw whales spouting. The last evening we enjoyed beverages on the beach while watching the sun set over the peninsula. We got exactly what we wanted on this vacation - a peaceful, beautiful escape! We hope to go back!

If you're looking for an "off the grid' vacation where you'll experience the authentic beauty and culture of the southern Baja peninsula, then Zacatitos is the place. Nestled less than 30 minutes by car from San Jose del Cabo, the area allows travelers to truly get away, relax, and enjoy nature. On your way into Zacatitos from the airport, you'll stop at the local supermarket, La Comer, and stock up on groceries and supplies for your stay, so that once you get to Zacatitos you can unplug and enjoy the beauty of the area.

Zacatitos is a beautiful, tranquil community where residents and guests enjoy a minimally invasive, 'off the grid' lifestyle. The community is solar powered, water is trucked in and stored in an underground 'pila', and we recycle and compost as much of our waste as possible. We ask that our guests respect our neighbors and the environment, and be mindful of resource usage. That said, this solar powered house has all the conveniences you will need to make your stay convenient and enjoyable.

The local beach is just a 5-10 minute walk out the front door, and many days you'll have it all to yourselves. More than 5 beachgoers is a crowded beach day in Zacatitos! The area offers great hiking/trail running, mountain biking, kayaking, SUP boarding, fishing, and more.

For surfers, Shipwrecks is less than a 15 minute drive up the road and Nine Palms is just a short drive beyond that.

For dining out, there is one restaurant in Los Zacatitos, open from 1 to 8 every day during the October to July season. It's a local gathering place serving mexican food with a full bar. Another option without going as far as San Jose or Cabo is Buzzards, which is a 3 mile drive away in La Laguna.

There is plenty of wildlife in the area, including cows passing through, wild horses, foxes, as well as a few families of wild donkeys that roam the area and might poke their heads in your car looking for snacks if you stop to say hello.

Easy day trips from Zacatitos: Todos Santos, a quaint artists town. Be sure to stop in at Hotel California. Cabo Pulmo is a marine preserve with arguably the best snorkeling in Baja. San Jose del Cabo is the nearest town, just a 20 minute drive from Zacatitos. Check out the 'mercado' where you'll find a fish market with the catch of the day, and great authentic food stalls for the best huevos rancheros or posole in the area. You won't find many tourists at the mercado, but the locals are welcoming and the food is the real deal.
