A cozy 2 bedroom home located at 9200 ft., in a small, historical mining town.

Experience being on the edge of pristine wilderness in this unique mining era town at 9200 ft. Just minutes from Brainard Lake Recreation Area, the most popular destination park on the Colorado Front range. Hike, bike, ski, snowshoe or enjoy the amazing Colorado sun on the front porch of this cozy Mountain home. Just 45 minutes from Rocky Mountain National Park, 20 minutes from the services that Nederland has to offer or drive 45 minutes to Boulder and take advantage of all this world class city has to offer. And if you’re a Cannabis Tourist, this is a great location to enjoy your experience without the fear of disapproval.

Our home features 2 bedrooms, that can accommodate up to 4 people, a bathroom with a shower, living room with dvd and wifi, a large country kitchen with everything you need to prepare your favorite foods. The house gets an incredible amount of sunshine and fresh mountain air, so you might find it hard to leave.

The home is a recently renovated mining era house. It was ordered from a Sears catalog in 1915 and was delivered to Ward on the Switzerland Trail Railway. Ward was a major contestant for the territorial seat of the Kansas territories. At one time there were over 12,00 people in the area at the pinnacle of the Gold Rush era. Now Ward has shrunk to its current population of about 200 residents with a General Store, Post Office and two restaurants, The Millsite Inn and Marrocco’s Italian Family Restaurant. Ward also boasts some of the best spring water in the world. This untreated municipal water supply comes from springs located above town in the national forest at 11,000 feet. It is one of the last municipal water supplies that is not required to chlorinate due to it’s pristine source. People come from miles around to fill their water containers at the outflow in town. The town also supports a community radio station Way High Radio that has served the populace since 1997. It’s varied, commercial free programming can be very entertaining at times. It’s also a great resource for local events.

Because we are located at 9200 ft, we strongly recommend 4wd at all times. SNOW TIRES, 4WD OR CHAINS ARE REQUIRED TO MAKE IT DOWN MODOC ST IN THE WINTER SEASON. Temperatures change quickly at this elevation so warm clothing (jackets, socks, hats) are essential at ALL times of the year. We are not exaggerating this in any way. Being at this altitude without the right clothing can be dangerous. We also recommend stocking up on food in Boulder or Nederland. The Utica Street Market is open daily in town for general supplies and it also has a to go cafe.

We are a family that loves being in nature, and spending our time together. We live 1 mile out side of Ward. We really appreciate where we live and the pristine beauty that it brings.

This is a special house. It has had some great memories created in it over the years. The house gets alot of sun and is off the main roads of Ward. The Town of Ward is really unique and has that small town feel that is quickly disappearing in our country. It's located in the heart of the Indian Peaks region which is some of the choicest scenery in Colorado. It's within minutes from hiking / skiing trails right on the edge of the Rocky Mountain wilderness.

This is one of the coolest places we have ever stayed, and we have traveled a lot. It is located in a very small unpretentious town on the side of hill/mountain. (You will need to be able to walk up steep stairs). The town of Ward has water flowing from a spring that is not filtered in any way. It comes gushing out, and people come from all around to fill up water jugs. It is no exaggeration for me to say that this is the BEST water I have ever had!!!! You have to get some if you are in Ward.

The house itself is super charming and so clean!!!!! We slept in the double size bed on the first floor, and it was super comfortable!!!!! The view from the front porch is spectacular!!!!

I can't say enough good things about the owners!!! We had planned to hike and camp in a tent our last night in Colorado, but after a grueling 14 mile hike a couple days before, we couldn't do that again :-) ...so we needed a place to stay at the last minute. We booked late at night online on Friday for a Saturday stay, and Crystal called me right away to confirm. Such awesome customer service!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great mountain getaway

My husband and I had a great time staying at the house in Ward. It was far away enough from city-life to feel like a real getaway, but not so far away that we couldn't get the things we needed. The house is exactly is pictured and fit our needs. The only difficult portions was the steep stairs leading up to the house, but there are only a few. Also, if you come stay, follow the directions your host provides and print them beforehand! We did not do this, lost GPS signal and had a really difficult time finding the house. Thankfully, some of the neighbors were very helpful and got us to where we needed to be. Overall, we had a great experience and would definitely stay here again!

Not recommended

I am sorry to say I would not recommend this property. From the gravel road with large ruts, the unsafe front steps, the bathroom without a door or electrical outlet, steep ladder-type stairs to the upstairs bedroom, and plug strip in the downstairs bedroom that provided the only outlet for that room, this house was a disappointment. I would question the safety of the residence because of these conditions. The one positive aspect is that the house was clean. The price seemed high for the condition of the house. For that, we could have stayed at a local motel. Had we not used VRBO in the past, this would be our only rental through this site.

Owner's Response: Hi Leisa, I’m sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your stay. The quality of our guests experience is very important to us. The house is located at 9200 ft on a dirt road as mentioned in our description, 4 wheel drive is recommended. There are 12 functional and safe steps leading up to the house and a steep stairway up to the upstairs bedroom in the house and depending on individual's physical condition these may be an issue. There are pictures of the indoor stairway posted on the listing. We do have plans for remodeling both of these stairways. This is a historic old house and because of this there are less convenient outlets, however it also sounds as though you may have missed outlets that were available in the downstairs bedroom and bathroom. As for the safety of the electrical system, the house has been updated to a 200 amp breaker system. Due to the unique layout of the house we do have a thick curtain used for a bathroom door, this is because a normal door is an obstacle for this location. We have considered replacing the curtain with a folding door. We are committed on keeping our rates fair and we feel guests are receiving a clean cozy 2 bedroom fully furnished mountain home at a similar rate to a motel. Sincerely, Crystal

Great place for a Colorado feel

If you're looking for a place on Colorado that feels like a home away, choose this place. When me and my four friends were looking for a place we wanted to experience Colorado for the nature aspect. This place is within 30 minutes of the Rocky Mountain National Park. Also nearby other parks and trails. 40 mins from Boulder and 50 from Denver.

Place has everything other than a washer and dryer. High altitude home but were from Florida and we weren't bothered by it.

Great great great place.

Also, owner was friendly and had a quick response to everything. Very accommodating.

charming and cosy.

The response time from the owner was quick. Directions were very good. The cabin itself was clean. My daughters description is best, she thought it felt like she was at grandmas. Having wifi was a nice extra. I would stay there again!

This rustic old miners cabin is quaint, clean & very small. It has been modernized but one should be aware that there is no actual door to the bathroom just a curtain. The main bedroom has a small opening into the kitchen above the fridge that is not closed off if one wants more privacy so as not to be disturbed by the person sleeping in the loft over the kitchen or if another person is using the kitchen when main bedroom person is trying to sleep. Fortunately there is Wi Fi . However, no cell service. There is also no land line so if you need phone access you have to travel away from the house. We couldn't text from the house. The stairs up to the house are narrow & quite steep if you have any knee or hip problems this is something to be aware of ahead of time.

I would recommend this cabin for friends or family who are close & know each other quite well due to the bathroom situation & the close proximity in the house. Also, if you need to be in contact with anyone via phone be aware that you have to travel away from the house to get cell service. A land line would be a great addition. Fortunately I am a camper from way back & I was able to adjust to this cabin in a way that worked out for me & the other person staying there with me. Although quite physically fit I am also 70 yrs old & this cabin would have suited me much better in my 20's & 30's.

I did however really appreciate very much being only a few miles away from the retreat I was attending for 10 days. That was super convenient & I would consider renting this cabin again for that reason but next time with a closer friend. The owner, Crystal, was friendly & great at getting back to me when I had questions. She provided extra towels since we stayed for 10 days & checked in on us when the power went out for an afternoon/evening. Thanks, Linda Barone

Our wifi internet is very reliable.

There is no cable or satellite tv.

We do not have a phone line. There is a pay phone on the front porch of the Utica Street Market and also one at The Millsite Inn. Cell Phone Access: AT&T has good service. Other providers might not work as well.

We live a couple minutes outside of town and are available for any assistance if needed. We may occasionally be on site during the day to do outdoor maintenance. (such as shoveling snow etc.)

Ward is a quirky mountain town. The house is located in Ward proper and is surrounded by other houses. Many folks moved here to get away from the masses. Interaction with locals can be a mixed bag. Most folks are friendly. Please keep your exploration of the town to the roadways. Yes, dogs do roam freely at times. They are mostly friendly.
There is no gas in Ward. Nederland has 24 hour pumps, a bank, library, health food store, grocery, restaurants, micro breweries, cannabis outlets 20 minutes away to the south on Hwy 72.

There is no public transportation in Ward.

We supply linens and towels.

If you are visiting us from a low altitude, be sure to drink lots of water to avoid altitude sickness. Also, if you plan to explore the wilderness, please make sure to bring hiking boots and a headlamp. We live in the Rocky Mountains. Our peaks are high, we have river crossings and rocky trails. Like in any other alpine terrain, the weather changes throughout the day. Bring both a warm jacket and a rain jacket if you plan to hike full days.

Although Cannabis has recently been regulated in Colorado, please use discretion when attempting to obtain it or use it. Many people here view these new changes as annoying due to the hype that revolves around this issue. Most people here are tolerant if not advocates, but that does not mean that everyone is weed friendly. Please be respectful. We can recommend certain stores that have integrity and good products. Feel free to inquire.
