About the property

4 bedroom, 2 bath close to Northgate and Kyle Field

Howdy Ags!

You've found the ideal rental for your family or group! Looking for a cool house that is a fun walk to Kyle and Olson Fields? We're not just convenient for A&M, we're conveniently located in the center of it all, yet in a quiet little niche of it. 1/2 - 1 mile walk to Northgate, restaurants, the new Century Court complex, and the northern edge of A&M's campus. An easy drive to Fire School. Groups...why pay $200 + per hotel room when for the same price* you can rent my home and have room to meet or just chill in front of the 60" tv or in the pool? (* For longer term rentals, please contact me). Only non-smoking responsible families or groups should apply (no extreme partiers who may damage property or upset my neighbors. And ABSOLUTELY no drugs, marijuana, etc.)

This mid-century modern was designed and built by an Aggie architecture prof. Everyone loves the way the home is situated on the lot making it almost an island unto itself. The walls of windows bring the outside in - especially with the pretty little park across the street framed by my trees. The unique neighborhood was once home to Aggie coaches like Bear Bryant and Shelby Metcalf. We have an open living concept that has 3 sections - the living room, dining and sunroom. It is perfect for entertaining a crowd. Our beds are very comfortable. All of the "extra sleeping places", like the couches or twin air mattress have bedding and pillows.

Here's a quick rundown:

Bed 1 - Full Size Bed (sleeps 2) - small room we call the mirror room. We think it must have been an exercise room. :)

Bed 2 - Queen size Bed (sleeps 2)

Bed 3 - Master Bed (no suite) - Queen bed (sleeps 2). Plenty of room to add air mattress or Pac-n-Play. Includes a window seat large enough for a 4 year old to sleep on, and two comfy swivel rockers.

Bathroom 1 - serves the front of house and all 3 bedrooms. Tub/shower combo. No double sink, but a long counter for makeup or dressing baby.

Bed 4 - Master Suite with an unbelievably comfy king and gorgeous 60" tv. It's a arge room with enough space for a pack "n' play or an air mattress. Master Bath has double sinks and a tub/shower combo plus direct access to the pool and patio.

Laundry enclave - has new front loading LG washer/dryer with detergent, bleach, fabric softener., dryer sheets. Also there is an ironing board and iron.

LIVING/DINING/SUNROOM/KITCHEN AREA - is all open to each other, with walls of windows (and blinds if you don't want the light and beautiful view of the grounds and park).

Living Room - One large couch that can sleep 1 adult very comfortably, with two comfortable chairs. Long buffet set up as a beverage bar for coffee/tea. Also makes a good place to lay out a food buffet. A dorm fridge is there as a convenient place to keep creamer, water or sodas.

Dining Room - Bar between kitchen and dining makes a good place to set up beverages, too. Table with 4 chairs, other chairs and piano bench can be pulled to make 8 spaces possible. Four wooden "tv tray tables" and one more slide in table allow five more people tables to eat on.

Kitchen - Small but very well laid out. Gas range and oven. All dishes, pots and pans with the usual spices.

Sunroom (Family Room) - One large sectional can accommodate 7 adults sitting, 2 sleeping (very comfortable!). 60" large screen tv (beautiful picture!) Large wood fireplace.

Patio and pool - patio is enclosed by a fence with gate to keep little ones safe. Patio is a nice place to chat under a large umbrella while barbecuing on the large propane grilll. Poolside there are plenty of chairs and some chaises. The beautiful pool is surrounded by brick. It has a 10 foot cantilevered tilt/crank umbrella that can be positioned to cover quite a bit of the pool area.

Our home, though not pretentious, is a stand out in the neighborhood. It's a 1950's Mid Century Modern with walls of windows overlooking an expansive front yard and the backyard patio and pool. People frequently tell me they have admired my home for years and always wondered what it looks like inside. There's places to spread out and come together - or get away from everyone (the master suite and the 2nd master with no attached bath).

About Barbara Svatek

Howdy! I'm a second generation Ag (my Dad was class of '53, I'm class of '80) and I am the proud owner of the Aggie Gem. My husband ('79) and I came to A&M and never left! Now widowed, this is my home and is set up for comfort and entertaining. Our daughter is a sophomore at A&M (whoop!) and I am a high school youth minister. Our two older children love to come home to visit with our adorable grandchildren (pictured). Since I am a recovering paraplegic who depends largely on a wheelchair or walker, my home is mostly handicap accessible. Ramps can easily be installed to make the house and front of the house easily maneuverable thanks to the wide hallway and large master bedrooms (also the front bathroom is accessible via wheelchair.

Why Barbara Svatek chose Texas Lakes

This home spoke to us the moment we walked through the front door. It is a house of light and good cheer. It's a beautiful home inside and out. The location is ideal - so close to A&M, Northgate, the mall, University Drive restaurants, as well as Central and Downtown Bryan. It's super convenient, yet so peaceful and quiet. And the set up lends itself well to entertaining inside and out, with an open concept dining/living room/family room (with walls of windows overlooking the neighborhood park), the pool, and the additional yard adjacent to pool big enough to accommodate a giant inflatable water slide or tents and table settings for an outdoor party or reception.

What makes this house unique

My home is named the Aggie Gem because of it's LOCATION, unique post-modern style and features inside. We were told that an Aggie engineer prof designed this home for himself and a few others like it nearby. The long, wide hallway showcases the backyard with windows lining the entire length. When you step in the front door, you feel a part of the park scenery across the street, with three entire walls of windows. This home is just 1 1/2 mile walk through campus to Kyle Field and just a bit over 1/2 mile to Northgate. Yet it's not on one of the main roads, but tucked into a quiet, tree lined street in a "family zone". In fact, this street used to be called Coaches' Lane, as this is where Bear Bryant, Shelby Metcalf, Gene Stallings and other early football coaches used to live before Jackie Sherrill changed the game forever in this town. We are also located near loads of great restaurants and downtown Bryan. All of this plus a beautiful swimming pool for summer and a fireplace in the winter makes this a gem of a get away for family or friends!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Emily wrote: We stayed five days and loved coming here because I could put our babies to bed in the back rooms and they weren't disturbed by the noises in the kitchen and living areas. My baby boys, age 3 and 18 months, love the long, wide hallway for racing anything: themselves, trucks, riding toys (and there are two here!) We took the boys across the street to the park because after looking at it from the windows 11 large windows across the two living areas, they wanted to check it out. No playground equipment, but a nice little stroll for us. The backyard also is large behind the pool, but at this age, they are too inquisitive and run too fast to take them out there unless we're actually in the pool with them. But the enclosed patio keeps them corralled nicely, and it was nice to be able to let them play out there without worries. This home is beautiful but not pretentious. I wasn't worried my boys would break something and we just loved being lazy all over that big sectional couch in the sunroom. The boys would crawl or walk back and forth looking out all of the windows and waving at neighbors walking their dogs or jogging. We'll be back!!!

Clean and cozy

  • 5 of 5

We had a great stay at this property! Barbara got back to me quickly with all my concerns and questions. The beds were comfortable and there was an extra air mattress and bedding too. The lot is on the corner so there is a nice sized yard to play in as well. The neighborhood was quiet yet super close to campus and restaurants. The kitchen is small, but we knew that going in and adjusted. The house is older but well kept and clean. We enjoyed our stay!! Thank you, Barbara!!

Great house with a really neat layout!!

  • 5 of 5

Owner was very nice and hospitable. Wish it would have been warm enough to use the pool though. Its in a great location where you can easily walk or uber to Northgate or Kyle Field but just far enough away that its quiet if you want to enjoy sitting outside which is what we did the whole time we were there since the weather was awesome. I would definitely recommend it for a group of friends or a large family as their is plenty of room to spread out

Perfect for a football weekend

  • 4 of 5

Barbara is very nice, and her home is great. The house easily fit 7 men for the weekend, and we did take advantage of the air mattress. No problems at all with the home, and Barbara made sure everything was easy for us.

I think we were one of Barbara's first VRBO renters, and there was a little technology trouble - but we were able to get it all sorted out just fine.

8 guys in town for Bama A&M. Everything was perfect!

Owner's Response: It was a pleasure to host your group! I love being able to help families and friends come together in a comfortable place that beats staying at a hotel. Not only financially competitive, but from the standpoint of making a large family or group of friends have the space to be together, with the amenities of the large house with comfortable beds and couches, nice patio overlooking the pool, and the pool itself. Not to mention the two 60 iinch tvs. The other great advantage here is that it is such a nice walk through the neighborhood and the center and western end of the main A&M campus or a short walk to Northgate.. 'Thanks Brad for the nice review!
