Forest Retreat was the home of Thomas Metcalf, the 10th governor of Kentucky, designed and built by him around 1814 and restored in 1935 by Dr. and Mrs. Eslie Asbury, 17 beautifully landscaped acres on Kentucky's most scenic highway from Lexington to Maysville, with a stone wall perimeter, the historic property is considered an entire district with its 1806 Tavern House, The stone barn, Main House, Carriage House, Guest House and historic cemetery where the Metcalf's along with the Asbury's are laid to rest. Forest Retreat was also home to the 1954 Kentucky Derby Winner Determine whose grave marker is also located on the property. Forest Retreat is considered one of Kentucky's best preserved examples of country federal design with décor and furnishings in the federal style, circa 1790 to 1840, additional modern amenities added to make guests feel at home. Come sleep in "The Governor's Bedroom", dine in the gorgeous dining room where Andrew Jackson dined on his way to his inauguration as president of the United States. We stayed at Forest Retreat for 3 nights while visiting family in Carlisle. The house is in great shape for being 202 years old! The manager, Allysha was very hospitable and full of knowledge of the history of the entire property. The whole compound can accommodate up to 24 people and hosts weddings and receptions. We stayed in the girl's room upstairs and were extremely comfortable. We actually would prefer it to the the Governor's room as the bathroom is adjacent to the room and it is much more private. We will definitely be back!
Incredible Weekend! Our family decided this might be one of the best places we have ever stayed. I can't wait until our next trip takes us this direction. The home is beautiful.
My wife and I have stayed at dozens of unusual and luxurious facilities at various places in many of the eastern states in the U.S. and in Scotland and Israel as well over the past thirty years but NEVER have we experienced such a wonderful facility such as Forest Retreat !!! Our ten days there will go down as some of the best we ever spent ANYWHERE! If you have even a small interest in U.S. and Kentucky history then Forest Retreat is an experience you will not want to miss. The "historical ambience" of this beautifully restored mansion that was built by an early governor of Kentucky is almost overwhelming! The owners deserve the highest praise for first restoring and now preserving this very early 1800's mansion and filling it full of antiques and significant historical artifacts of many kinds. Each day there my wife and I would discover new and amazing items in one or more of its many rooms to wonder over and admire. The many outstanding books collected for the library of Forest Retreat are also a "feast for the mind and eyes" for all who stay there to enjoy. The owners agents, Todd and Allysha, were absolutely great to deal with and we wish them the very best in their efforts to showcase this absolutely outstanding rental property. Rest assured that we will be looking for future opportunities to return to Forest Retreat and once again enjoy its beautiful hilltop views, its interior splendor and its historical presence. We give FR 5 Stars as a vacation or special event destination!
