Our Family loves the excitement of downtown Auburn! We bought the property because of the retail spaces on the ground level and rented the apartments to students and young professionals for the last 10 years. We decidedin 2015 to convert the front apartment into a year round rental. It is a great location for football game-day, basketball games, graduation, school visits and more. The furnishing are comfortable and welcoming for guest use as well as family and friends who visit.
Julie McGowin purchased this apartment in 2004
We had a store in the retail spaces below and retired after 20 years. After we closed the store we kept the building as an investment and rental income property.
Built in 1928 as additional spaces for Mr Jone's Boarding house (where Baptist Campus Ministry is now) for his student boarders, the building has a piece of Auburn history in it. When we bought the property in 2004 the original plaster and lattice was severely damaged and had to be replaced with drywall. During the renovations the original hardwood floors and subway tile bathrooms were refinished and preserved and everything else was updated to modern standards (HVAC, kitchen, W/D). The result was three charming apartments in a fantastic location -- downtown Auburn! The back two apartments are lofts that are rented to current Auburn students. The downstairs retail space is rented by the Bike Shop. Because the property is shared we ask that quiet hours are respected from 10 pm - 8 am as well as no loud or large parties.
The location is by far the best reason to stay here but when you do you stay here you will see the charm of the apartment too. It has original hardwood floors, high ceiling with crown molding, deep window bays, lots of windows and natural light, and the 1928 subway tile bathrooms. The bathrooms have only showers; my mom(a navy brat) calls them 'Navy showers' as they have a narrow 19" entryway. Definitely not a cookie cutter apartment or condo. The updates included cherry cabinets and granite counter in the kitchen area. The windows all have wood plantation blinds as well.
Great property. Close to everything. Will stay here again when we are in town!
The owner communicates well and was very helpful. The apartment/condo was great! Easy parking and within easy walking distance of everything. We were very impressed with everything that was included and available. There was coffee, candy, water, etc. - everything we needed. With 2 bedrooms with two full baths, it was more space than we needed.
The rental was super clean, and exactly as the property was described. We will stay here again, and will make it our home when we are in Auburn.
You will love this place, naps we do - after our first stay.
Perfect location. Well maintained. Owner is great to work with.
This apartment is right in the heart of downtown Auburn. It is very clean and has everything that you need for a comfortable visit. Julie is wonderful and very easy to work with.
This apartment is located in pretty much the ideal location to visit Auburn, whether on game-day, or any other time of year. It's convenient walking to campus, the stadium, stores, and restaurants. The apartment itself is wonderfully laid out with 2 bedrooms each with their own bathrooms and large closets, an updated kitchen and dining area with everything you'd need (appliances, pots/pans, etc.), and a large living area with plenty of seating and views of college street. We had 2 adults and 3 kids stay there and there was plenty of room for everyone. The furniture and decor in the apartment is a cool collection of charming "antique" like, retro, and modern all together. Everything was very comfortable (beds, couches, etc.) and easy to use (TV, washer/dryer, etc.). The owner gave an excellent write up of where to park, how to get in, how things work, etc., making our stay convenient and easy. I highly recommend staying here if you are looking for a great location and eclectic apartment in the heart of Auburn.
This is a great location and we walked everywhere we went. Although, there was a dirty wash cloth hanging on the faucet handle in one of the showers with an open bottle of shampoo in there as well. Apparently the apartment wasn't throughly cleaned before we arrived. The showers are very tiny, so very little room to move. Also, very noisy, so if that's a problem for you the noise is pretty much all night. The bed was comfortable and the view of downtown was great. We did love the convenience of the apartment.
All the events and activities provided by Auburn University could keep you busy on any given day - Football, Basketball, Baseball, Softball, Soccer, Gymnastics, Tennis, Swimming, Equestrian, Music, Theater, special events and more. The University offers campus walking tours and locker room tours for FREE on the Fridays before home games! If you are an Alumni Association member -the Alumni 'tent' has been moved to the Alumni Center on College (4 blocks south of the apartment) for your complementary game-day snacks and tailgating experience.
The City of Auburn's Frank Brown Rec Center is 4 blocks away and offers a fitness center, indoor racquetball and indoor and outdoor basketball courts. The city has pools as well that are open May - August annually for $2/swimmer/day. Year round indoor open swim times are available at the university's Aquatic center.
The Auburn-Opelika Area has numerous golf courses all within a 15 min drive of the apartment.
For outdoor family activities (bird watching, hiking, nature playground, educational activities) check out the Forest Ecology Preserve about 4 miles up north College street. Try Chewalca State Park for swimming, canoeing, paddle boats, and freshwater fishing as well as hiking, camping and great new mountain biking trails just off Shell Toomer Parkway at exit 51 on I-85 about 15 minutes south of the apartment. My kids and I always go to the back side of the lake at the spillway which goes over a series of rocks and creates a scenic waterfall area.
The City has an indoor tennis center located on Richland Road that is available to use if they are not having a tournament or classes. You can always play at the outdoor courts located on Samford Avenue across from the high school.
If you wish to go to church while visiting Auburn First Baptist is across the street and Auburn United Methodist is a block and a half away. There are many other churches in town within 2 miles of the apartment.
The closest grocery stores are Kroger at Glenn and Dean and Publix at N College and East University Drive. Both are about a 5 minute drive from the apartment.
There is a new CVS downtown just a few block south of the apartment. If you need a Walgreen's it is located at Glenn and Dean. American Family Care is located on South College Street across from Walmart and is open 7 days a week until 6 pm. Moore's Mill Acute Care is open later at their Tiger Town location (10pm).
East Alabama Medical Center is the nearest hospital and is about 20 minutes away in Opelika just beyond the intersection of Opelika Road and Hwy 280.
If you need a dentist Dr Yount is located just past Mike and Ed's BBQ a block to the north of the apartment.
Banks and gas stations are pretty much found every block so they are easy to find and plentiful.
Babysitter, if you need one I can pass along info to see if they are available.
