Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday cottage in West - Sodulsholt Cottage 1

New Cottage sleeping up to 4 in first rate accommodations

NEW Premium 4-Person Cottage on a Horse Farm on Snaefellsnes Peninsula

Sodulsholt is a working horse training and conditioning farm on the Snaefellsnes peninsula that includes over 70 horses, horse stables, and a first class indoor riding facility on more than 1300 hectares (3,200 acres). We are located 2 hours from Keflavik International Airport and approximately 40 minutes northwest of the town of Borgarnes.

Our accommodations include brand new cottage (built in September 2015) that sleeps 4 people comfortably. Cottage includes Wifi (for email, internet browsing), a double mattress, 2 twin beds, full kitchen (including microwave, toaster, coffee machine, refrigerator), sitting area, bathroom with shower, and outside seating area. Fresh linens are provided. Do you prefer to grill? A "Weber" grill is available for your use.

Sodulsholt serves as a central location to explore the beautiful surroundings of the Snaefellsnes peninsula, including the Eldborg Volcanic Crater, a nearby geothermal pool, Gullborgarhraun Lava field (formed by the Gullborg volcano 7000 to 9000 years ago and referenced in the Icelandic Sagas), the village of Stykkisholmur, Arnarstapi/Hellnar and the Snaefellsjokull glacier.

Foal season typically runs from May through September when we welcome additional foals into the Sodulsholt family. June features our sleppitur event when the horses are let out for the summer.

In July, we participate in the annual Farmer Ride and guests may have the ability to join in on the festivities including a fantastic Icelandic lamb dinner and dancing at the end of the day.

Experienced horsemen could reserve a horse for riding around the area including to the nearby beaches. Our property also includes a river where you can test your skills at catching fresh Icelandic salmon (extra fee, summer only).

Our Snaefellsnes location is ideal for observing the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) as they can be seen from October through March.

Sodulsholt is located approximately 13 km (8 miles) from the Eldborg Volcanic Crater, 50 km (31 miles) from the town of Borgarnes, 45 km (28 miles) from the historic town of Stykkisholmur, 69 km (43 miles) from Arnarstappi/Hellnar and the Snaefellsjokull glacier.

Check-in time is 16:00 and Check-out time is 10:00.

Our exact location (latitude/longitude) is: N 64° 50' 07.2", W 22° 26' 14.3" (64.835322, -22.437306)

About Oli

Horse breeder and casual farmer that has lived and traveled the world but calls Snaefellsnes home.

Oli purchased this cottage in 1998

Why Oli chose Iceland

This large property (over 1300 hectares or 3,200 acres) has it all! The view of the mountains, ocean, and free grazing horses are spectacular. We are conveniently located with easy access to the many sights that Snaefellsnes peninsula has to offer and more. The cottages are brand new and were built in September 2015. I invite you to come for a visit and to take in the beauty of the area.

The property includes a private river where guests may fish for salmon (extra fee).

What makes this cottage unique

The view, the area, new cottages, and easy access to various sights in the area make this a unique, quiet, and yet central location.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Hallo Oli,

you asked about our stay at your place:

Might be enough to say: we'll be back!

Your cottage is as close to feeling at home as anyone can hope for. We all loved it.

:-) Actually we are thinking about getting one of those barbecue grills for ourselves at home. :-)

Only thing was: it was to short. The weather was not really great. And our daughter hat developed a bad cold and had to stay in bed for the whole two days.

Iceland as a whole was very different in what even after reading/seeing some movies prepared us for. I still get the feeling that I need more time to understand. Even though I am beginning.

Next time we come, we'll try to make it more relaxing and feeling the calmness and the peace of the country. This time we tried to see all the "sights" - which are fascinating - but also exhausting a little in too short a time.

I especially regret that I didn't find the time to get to know you and your horses. It was awesome to see them being trained so competently. They are wonderful.

But as I said: Next time.

Thank you for having us - I'll certainly leave a comment on your FB page.

Brand new cabin in the middle of an idyllic horse farm

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 4 had a wonderful two night stay at Oli's cabin. The cottages are brand new and have anything one may need ( including a grill). The setting is idyllic, and we could stroll around the farm fields in the evening. The horses are very friendly, and we really enjoyed riding them for a little while. Overall, a wonderful place to spend a few night in

Beautiful cabin

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time staying in this brand new cabin. It had everything we needed, including a spectacular view from the deck, where we could watch the moon rise over the mountains. This house was close to the national park, Stikkisholmur and many other great locations. Within a few kilometers, there were great sites to visit and explore, such as Eldborg volcano, and the geothermal hot pots, which were terrific after a long day of hiking. My boys loved their first horseback riding lesson on this horse farm and we loved getting to visit with the horses and the friendly cat! Before we arrived, I had some questions for the owner, which were answered immediately and a question during our stay that was also answered immediately. We loved this rental and wished we could have stayed longer!

Unique dwelling in a unique country

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I greatly enjoyed our two-night stay in this brand-new cottage. Everything was clean and of the highest quality, including the appliances, bathroom fixtures, and other furnishings. We especially appreciated the preliminary information about the area and how quickly Einar came when we had a question. What a great retreat as a home base for exploring the peninsula in West Iceland!

Perfect location for exploring the peninsula

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our three night stay at the cozy and very clean cottage with the beautiful views of the mountains. My sons loved sleeping in the loft!

When booking our stay, we had some reservations about the location in regards to our itinerary we had planned for our time on the peninsula. In the end, it was the perfect spot to explore everything in the area.

Appreciated the quick response and the additional information on places to visit in the area. One of our favorite waterfalls was one that Oli had recommended but was not on our itinerary.

Lovely calm oasis

  • 5 of 5

This property, though not close to anything, was perfect for what we wanted. It provided a great spot to relax after enjoying the western part of Iceland; very comfy and had everything we needed.

Owner's Response: Thank you for visiting our horse farm and for the review. The beauty of 3,200 acres is that we have no neighbors and coupled with great views and easily accessible day trips to the area.
