Sublime Retreat near Telluride

Bedrooms 3
Space 2,300 sq. ft.
Property type house
Minimum Stay 6 nights

About the property

An amazing house/35 acre compound on a mesa outside of Telluride.

Surrounded by mountain views, gorgeous sunrises and sunsets, Sundial Ranch is 20 miles from Telluride yet a world away. In this private and inspiring setting, you can sample all the area has to offer or use this beautiful home as the perfect writers retreat. 3 bedrooms, 3 baths with private patio off the master to have a glass of wine while you watch the Elk play at alpenglow. Beautiful interior rooms open to outdoor space with hot tub and dining pavilion. LR with large FPL, DR for 8, Cooks kitchen, and family room. A perfect home for a family getaway or a couple looking to get away from it all.

The stars are so close you can touch them when in the hot tub at night. Fish for Trout in the San Miguel River at the base of our road. Hike or ride the numerous trails on the mesa or in the area. Help yourself to fresh herbs and vegetables from our small greenhouse in the summer. Visit with the horses or arrange a ride in the summer.

There is an office area with computer, printer and high speed internet as well as cable TV with Chromecast enabled TV in MBR. An additional desk area is in the LR if separate work spaces are needed.

A dog is welcome and there is a small fenced yard. There are horse facilities available for an extra charge from June - October. The ranch house is at 9000' so the weather is quick to change as storms rolls through, but Telluride has 280 - 300 Bluebird days a year and it is never inclement for long. That being said, this is a rental for a more self reliant type of person during the winter months, and though the driveway and 4 mile road to the house is plowed you must have 4WD vehicle with good snow tires and be prepared for weather when it happens. The owner can be available on the property to assist with your needs as well.

If you enjoy a mix of solitude, the outdoors, and all that Telluride has to offer, you won't be disappointed.

This home can be rented in combination with the fabulous

VRBO #491812 (right down the road) for larger family gatherings and groups.

About Abby Dix

I fell in love with Telluride after spending some formative years in Colorado. Once I saw this special piece of land I had to have it as it's a one of a kind. After building the infrastructure and living in a bunkhouse in the barn, I designed this house to be a quiet and special place. Surrounded on the East by conservation easements and on the West by a 10,000 acre private ranch, it will forever be a paradise. The top of the property is the house & garage and below is a barn with bunkhouse, a hay shed, various pastures and shelters.

It appealed to the creative person in me to build a compound that was extra special. I'm a film and design person and savor the details of all things. I want to cut back and ride more so I'm putting the house on VRBO.... I'll stay in The Bunkhouse down the hill and can advise as needed or leave town.

Abby Dix purchased this house in 1993

Incredible Beauty

  • 5 of 5

We were looking for a place to enjoy all that Southwest Colorado is - and we found it. The house and property are perfect. You are far enough from civilization yet close enough to just about anything you desire. Lots of hiking, fishing, abundant wildlife and great restaurants in Telluride and Ridgeway! Abby was an unbelievably gracious host and we truly enjoyed our time with her. We hope to return many times. It is a Special Place.

Perfect, perfect, perfect!

  • 5 of 5

This property is exactly the type of vacation home our family loves- amazingly mesmerizing views outside and total comfort and beauty inside. The hardest part of our stay was deciding which of the three patios and subsequent views to spend my time on! The patio off the master was actually my favorite with its gorgeous sunrise every morning, miles long vista unspoilt by any man-made sound, and bonus view of two watering ponds that animals might visit at sunset. My husband loved the large back patio with its lounging chairs, eating table and sunset view extending to Utah!

The inside of this home was literally a treasure. It was thoughtfully designed and decorated- lots of glass windows to bring the outside in and new artistic touches to discover in every room every day. The lovely, welcoming owner Abby has a background in film and in design, which clearly show in the house. The beds were so comfy, the kitchen easy to cook in and the separate tv/reading room was where our family gathered to chill out some nights to watch a dvd together.

Our family of five also enjoyed the beautiful 40 minute drive to Telluride. A few of the things we really enjoyed there included hiking the Jud Wiebe Trail (harder than we thought at the higher altitude!), hiking the Black Bear Trail (beautiful waterfall at the top), white water rafting (river was so fast and fun with snow melt in June) and eating a delicious meal sitting outside at Smuggler's Pub. Two other quick bites- in the middle of town, enjoy a delicious hot gyro from the cart guy there and also get a yummy brie and apricot melted cheese sandwich from the friendly cart lady there. And feel free to bring your pooch into town as this seems to be the most dog friendly town in America!

Thank you, Abby, for sharing your treasure of a home with our family.

An artist's view of the mountains

  • 5 of 5

If you want to live inside an artist's space--meaning Nature and the home-owner's--this is the home to choose.

The property is breathtaking inside and out, with clearly professional (but not precious or fragile) interior design. The views from every window--some of mountain peaks, others of carefully placed outdoor items--are stunning, and outdoor patios are carefully placed to focus attention on the most eye-catching mountain peaks. I sat out outside in the mornings (in my ski gear!) because it was too beautiful to stay inside. Spectacular sunsets and sunrises.

The location allows for quick and easy access to the Mountain Village ski area, and the drive was so gorgeous we did not mind a short drive. Well worth it to be away from the busier and noisier commercial areas.

Well- stocked kitchen, and thought-provoking bookshelves.

The owner put a beautiful, fresh, Christmas tree in the home for us, and stocked the fireplace with wood and kindling.

Visitors in winter for sure must have a four-wheel drive vehicle to access the property, which is at the top of a hill: Hence the stunning views.

We will stay there again anytime we should be so lucky to visit the area. And it was totally worth the short drive to be away from the more commercial areas. The property is enveloped in total and complete silence 24/7.

And we loved the very generous gift basket!

Owner's Response: Thank you, Dan and Carolyn for your kind review. It makes me happy that you noticed so many things about the relationship of the house to the outdoors; the way the dining pavilion lines up with the mountain peak and other small details. It is a special place and seems to attract special people like you. I appreciate the way you took care of everything here and look forward to you coming again. All the best, Abby

A vista you will not forget

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I, along with our dog Jasper Jake, spent six weeks at Abby's lovely house. We have been renting vacation homes for about six years in the west and we have never had a home with such beautiful views. The house was comfortable. I say this because it is obvious that Abby has decorated her home with lovely pieces of furniture and original artwork. With all this, it does not make you feel like you have to watch every step. She has just made it a comfortable, livable and beautiful house. We talked to Abby for almost a year before arriving. As we are older, she wanted to make sure we chose a time of year that was suitable for us. And she helped us pick a wonderful time of the year. Words, or at least my words, cannot describe what magical place this is....you will fall in love again every morning when you look through the windows at such a vista. The house is suitable for older people and the fenced yard provides the security you need for your fur babies. If we could give it more than five stars we would. You will not be disappointed.

Amazing location & house!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Abby's house in early August and loved every minute of it. It was secluded with amazing views from every angle but within an easy drive over to Telluride for shopping, restaurants, etc. Prior to arrival, Abby gave us tips on where to stop for groceries on our way to the house. She also met us at the house to give us a tour of the property and answer any questions. The house was definitely well-equipped with everything we needed during our stay - coffeemaker, pots/pans, towels, laundry detergent, gas grill & Green Egg. It was even cool enough on our last night to enjoy a fire in the fireplace. One of our favorite evening activities was to drive the roads surrounding the property to look for animals. Over the course of a few nights, we saw deer, a black bear, elk and a porcupine. Our golden retriever travelled with us as well and loved the fenced in front yard! While in Telluride, we took advantage of a few of the hiking trails, riding the gondolas over to Mountain Village, shopping and eating at the local restaurants. Our stay was wonderful and we hope to visit again!
