The name of this house is Wind Dreamin', kinda says it all! This is a spacious Sound-front home which boasts sunsets and sound views galore. This home is directly on the Pamlico Sound. There are only approximately 75 actual Sound-front homes in the Salvo/Tri-Villages area, this is one of them. Don't be fooled by other advertisements that make a rental appear to be water front. "Sound view", "semi Sound-front", and pictures showing a view of the Sound, are not Sound-front. From many of these homes the water is tantalizingly close and yet you have to drive a mile or more to get to public access to the water.

This home has a private dock that stretches onto the Pamlico Sound. The backyard of this home is on the Sound. No access issues. Walk right down and into the water. Kite, paddle, SUP, windsurf, jet ski, sail, water ski, wake board, all right from the house. Most Soundfront homes on Hatteras have a sea wall, stairs, sea grass, or other impediments between the home and the Sound. Wind Dreamin offers direct easy access to the water from a semi-sandy beach near the water's edge. Yes, once you get in the water it is a bit muddy the first few feet, but get out into the Sound any distance and the footing is back to sandy. Arguably we have the best access to the Sound in the Tri-Villages area and one of the best on Hatteras Island.

Upgrades! Mid-June, 2016, we completed some major upgrades to the house. There is an expansion to the end of the dock. A new deck at the end of the dock makes it large enough to host a picnic table and benches. This marks one of the two major improvements to the outdoor living space of the house. The second outdoor upgrade is a walkway from the house to the water's edge. This upgrade provides convenient access to the kite, windsurfing, kayaking staging area. See the newly uploaded photos in the VRBO listing. Other upgrades include additional painting and decor in the bathrooms and bedrooms. New flat screen TVs and upgraded cable TV! More improvements to come, October, 2016! Likely improvements will include more heart pine flooring, and additional walking path, and more interior painting. We are excited about this place, we know you will be too.

The house is located in the Outer Banks on Hatteras Island. The geography is unique. The house is in the tri-villages area of Rodanthe, Waves, and Salvo. The house is located in Salvo, NC, and Hatteras Island becomes very narrow here. The island is only 12 house lots wide. Three to four lots on the west side of NC 12 and 8 or so lots on the east side. That means that you can enjoy the roar of the Atlantic Ocean, huge waves, big dunes, and the best surfing on the East Coast within a 5-7 minute walk from the house. With the house on the Pamlico Sound, and mainland North Carolina 15 miles to the west the sun sets over the water, the most spectacular way to begin an evening. Walk to the Blue Whale for coffee in the morning, enjoy the sunrise over the Atlantic, body surf during the mid-day, walk back to the house, kayak at dusk, and jump in the hot tub to enjoy the sunset, all never more than about 1900 feet from the house. Hatteras Island is better than the North Beaches area of the Outer Banks. The North Beaches areas of Nags Head, Kitty Hawk, Corolla, Duck, and the like offer Home Depot and Lowes, McDonalds and Burger King, Walmart and Kohls. Hatteras Island has hardly any chain stores or chain restaurants, and more than 36 miles of undisturbed national seashore, much of it accessible by four wheel drive vehicle. Hatteras Island offers easy access to the best parts of the Pamlico Sound with endless possibilities for water sports. The Atlantic Ocean beaches on Hatteras Island are wide and flat. In the North Beaches area long sea wall with narrow beaches in front abound.

A convenient entry via a drive up ramp to the first level makes unloading a breeze and provides purpose built handicap accessibility. The first floor offers gorgeous Sound views from the living, dining and kitchen area. On this level one will find a bedroom with two twins and a full bath that is handicapped accessible. Also on the first floor is a master suite complete with an ensuite bath that features a European wet room shower, ideal for a handicapped person as the shower provides roll in access. The sound front deck on this level offers a hot tub to relax after a hard day of play.

Venture upstairs to the spacious second level with a sitting area, a half bath, a full hall bath and the remaining 3 bedrooms. The master suite with queen bed, the bunk bedroom (2 pyramid beds which can sleep 4-6 kids) and the final queen bedroom all have deck access and views overlooking the Pamlico Sound.

Outside there's an enclosed outdoor shower to wash off after a day out on the water. There is a dock to the Sound and a small beach which provides a staging area for water sports including kite boarding, windsurfing, sailing and kayaking. This home provides kite-in/kite-out access to the Sound. Leave your kite gear, kayak, or SUP board at the water's edge, have lunch, go right back out for an afternoon session. If you wish to rent kayaks, Hobie cats, jet skis, SUP boards or even bicycles just walk next door to Hatteras Water Sports, check their website, or call them. It could not be easier to have fun at this location.

The decor. This stuff does not matter to some but matters a lot to others. The kitchen is recently remodeled and presents with stainless appliances, granite, and wood floors. The furniture has been upgraded, the bedding is new, the paint is fresh. I don't know about you but when we see this kind of decor in a VRBO place it says "clean" and you won't be disappointed in this regard with our place.

This house has a private feel. Pull down the driveway and you feel like you have arrived at your own private little oasis. Kids can play safely on flat spacious grounds, and the water's edge is so gently sloped it feels like a zero entry swimming pool.

We have rented several VRBO homes in the past. We understand how people can get a little queasy handing over significant sums of money to an individual as compared with a rental management agency. The owner of this home is Sequoia Capital, LLC, which in turn is owned by David J. Reed, who is an attorney in the Atlanta, GA area. I am 52 years old, I'd like to continue to practice law for a few years, and I can assure you that your rental funds will be safe. The State Bar of Georgia would not allow it to be any other way.

We are a very active family that came to visit Hatteras for the first time in May of 2015 and absolutely fell in love with the location. We love being on the water. We owned this house within a month of our first trip to OBX.

Why Deborah and David Reed chose Salvo

As an active family the location suited us perfectly because of the availability to water sports. We love to kite board, water ski, wake board, jet ski, sail, surf, bike, and run so it just fit us perfectly. The shallow Sound makes for limited wave action even in a strong wind. Walk over to the ocean side and the geographic position of the Outer Banks and consistently strong winds makes this area perhaps the best on the East Coast for surfing.

What makes this house unique

Sound front, picturesque sunsets, dock, sandy beach, and unobstructed views. Spacious home for families.

Hatteras Water Sports next door. Only 1 mile from REAL Water Sports, the premier kite boarding instruction venue on the planet.

The wind is better on Hatteras Island. Ground obstructions cause friction and slow down lower level wind and make it turbulent, gusty. On Hatteras Island the prevailing wind is southwest in the Summer northeast in the Fall through Spring. The island is so narrow, with so few obstructions that even a northeast wind is smooth and consistent on the Sound. A good southwest breeze in the Summer is astoundingly consistent, with hardly any gusts. The popped out eastward nature of the geography of Hatteras Island, combines with the effect of the Labrador current mixing with the Gulf Stream to create consistently stronger wind on Hatteras Island than anywhere else on the east coast. Just 30 miles to the north in Nags Head, Kitty Hawk, and other parts of the North Beaches, the heat can feel oppressive as the breeze blows from the southwest over the tops of the houses and trees and is not felt by most residents and visitors crowding to the east to get closer to the ocean.

The temperature is better on Hatteras Island. Given its geography, a narrow spit of land deposited in what would otherwise be 15 miles off the North Carolina coast, the house is both cooler in the Summer and warmer in the Winter than its latitude would predict. The cool water of the Atlantic and the Sound in the summer mollifies the heat you might feel just 2 miles inland on the mainland. Lower temperature means lower humidity and the regular breeze further beats the heat. Just as the ocean keeps it cool in the summer it keeps it warm enough in the winter that it hardly ever snows and if it does the flakes on the ground are fleeting. Water sports are no problem in September, and October. Many people kite year round in OBX.

  • The first floor bathrooms and the full hall bath upstairs are huge. To say this home is handicapped accessible is to do the handicap features a disservice. This home was designed and purpose built with a handicapped person in mind. The first floor master has a roll in shower, a roll under sink and sturdy, plentiful bars around the toilet. All of the doors in the house, including the doors into bathrooms, are 36" wide to permit very easy wheelchair access.

Awesome home away from home!

Our stay at Wind Dreamin' was our first VRBO experience, and this sound-front home did not disappoint. The property was just beautiful with a wonderful private feeling, and it offered a view of Pamlico Sound that was awesome. We saw an otter regularly, several species of sea birds, and deer. My grandchildren were able to comfortably walk at the water's edge and play. A short walk from the property was the gorgeous seashore where dolphins were swimming.

The view from inside the home was equally extraordinary, and the sunsets were spectacular. The open concept common area allowed our family to be close while preparing and having meals. The handicap accessible bathrooms and bedrooms on the lower floor were perfect for my mom's needs.

Upstairs each of the three bedrooms had an awesome view of the sound. Sliding doors in each offered access to the upper deck. The accommodations were comfortable and ample for many sleeping arrangements.

Overall the home was clean, comfortable, and well appointed. We spent a week enjoying everything it had to offer. We felt really at home, and that was an awesome thing to experience during our family vacation. Definitely our family wants to make Wind Dreamin' our home away from home again. Thank you, owners, for sharing your home with us!

Wonderful Family Vacation!

We all had a fabulous time at Wind Dreamin'. The house was exactly as described and even better than we hoped for. We have been going to the Rodanthe, Waves & Salvo area for years, so we were very familiar with the area, it is our favorite part of the island! We always visited in our motor home, but with all of our family joining us on this trip, the house was wonderful and very accomodating, with plenty of room for all. My favorite was the view of the Pamlico Sound, I would never get tired of that view and the magnificent sunsets, especially from the end of the dock, they were truly awesome! We brought our 4 kayaks and the boardwalk through the grass and marsh area was so convenient. We were able to leave the kayaks pulled up on the grassy area where they were safe and ready for the next trip. Our sons enjoyed fishing off the dock, even though they didn't catch anything. The house is very convenient to some restaurants and shops; the beach was a short walk. The house was very clean and attractive, as the pictures show. We loved the large kitchen, dining area and living room open area. We did a lot of cooking and the kitchen was very well stocked with the proper equipment. The programmable lock on the front door, very convenient and no key to keep track of or lose! The ramp was very convenient to unload and load the vehicles. We would definitely stay there again the next time we head down to OBX.

Great Family Getaway!

PERFECT SPOT for my wife and I to explore OBX! The home is great and very accommodating. This home is convenient because it's on the sound and very quiet. And it's close to town. There's a bike shop across the street and found that to be the only transportation we needed during our stay. Fun surf town and the people are really nice.

As for activities, there were lots to do! Biking, kite-surfing (such a big kite-surfing town as I came to learn more about the area), and hanging out at the beach (not a far walk from the house).

Hope you enjoy this house as much as we did!

I've rented for years in OBX - this is one of the best!

We had a great time during our stay!

Easy access to the water with the new lower walkway. Very large outdoor shower (a must for watersports enthusiasts). Sunsets are incredible! You can enjoy them on the two tiered deck or grab a drink and head down to the end of the dock for an incredible view.

My group was full of kiters and beginners. The shallow water and easy access made it very easy for learning. Lower walkway allows quick access to water and shower. Great protected area to leave a jetski, kayak or SUP overnight.

House itself is tucked in a small wooded area so you don't feel crowded by your neighbors. Many shops are within a short walk or bike ride. (I recommend renting a few bikes if you don't bring your own)

The owners/managers were very attentive. You can see the improvements they continue to make to the property. I have been in houses that are allowed to be run down and worn out. That is NOT the case here! The furniture is updated, paint is fresh and property is well maintained. Nice to see owners taking pride and seeing property as an investment to be enjoyed over a long term commitment instead of short term gain.

I will be back... and not soon enough.

Other Activities: This is the spot VRBO allows owners to describe other activities. We have to tell you about the kiteboarding and kitesurfing. Oddly VRBO does not offer kiteboarding or kitesurfing as "check the box" choices in their Sports and Adventure Activities section. Salvo and the Tri-Villages area have become the premier area on the East Coast for kiteboarding. This is it. This is the place for the best kite boarding, the best kiteboarding instruction, the best wind, and the best water, east of Hawaii that is.

Wind: In the Summer it is typically windy enough for kiteboarding 4 days out of 7. Nearly every day in the Fall.

Water: The water is shallow for hundreds of yards, in many places for more than a mile out from the shore in the Pamlico Sound. This makes kiting safer. It makes kiting much easier on the beginner or intermediate kiter. The water is warm too, warm enough to go without a early to mid May and into late September. A 3/2 wetsuit will due into early November.

Instruction: REAL Watersports has become arguably the best place for kiteboarding instruction in the world. Their system (jet ski support), their facility, even the apres kite vibe are all superlative. Not far behind is Kitty Hawk Kites, same instruction method, more laid back atmosphere, a better on-site restaurant, and if you don't kite you won't believe the range of activities offered from horseback riding in the surf, to hang gliding in a replica of the Wright flyer, if it's fun, Kitty Hawk offers it.
