Things to do nearby:

There is a hiking trail to the top of the island with an incredible view of all the San Juan islands and the surrounding salish sea.

Frank's beach is an afternoon sun beach on the west side of the island, and is a good place to view sunsets over Vancouver island.

Bring your dog for a walk: Franks' beach is off-leash. You can also walk your dog off-leash on the old gravel road that leads to a wonderful beach area at smuggler's cove.

The Curry Preserve also has a nice hiking trail in the deep woods.

One of our best anniversaries

  • 5 of 5

We had an amazing time at the property for our anniversary. Grant was a very nice and hospitable person who made us feel welcome the second we arrived. He showed us around and we even walked our dogs around for a bit before he left. Our evening was very quiet and peaceful and it was exactly what we were looking for. Would recommend this to anyone looking for a quiet relaxing getaway.

Decent Stay, but beware of the hot tub..!

  • 3 of 5

I really struggled with leaving this review, as the last thing I want to do is harm Grant's business. Our stay wasn't totally what we were expecting. My friend convinced me that honesty is best because consumers need to be informed. So with that, I first want to start with the positive: Grant is a wonderfully kind individual who will always go the extra mile for his guests. Lummi Island is fairly desolate in terms of things to do (which is why we chose it!). If you love nature, the quiet, the forest, hikes, and ocean - You will love Lummi. If you need constant distraction and glitzy entertainment, you may want to rethink staying at Lummi Island. We brought our own food because Lummi has one less than impressive grocery store - but Grant still offered to bring us groceries from the mainland multiple times, and also offered to heat up our fire stove for heat while we were gone seeing Mount Baker. It was very kind. The house itself is beautiful, as it was customized/built by Grant himself. As he told us, every part of the construction has an interesting story. We were really impressed.

The bad: Unfortunately, when we pulled into the driveway Grant was fairly drunk with a glass of wine in hand. I'm sorry to report this, but it was very unprofessional to be guided around your stay with a drunk host. The biggest reason we booked this place was because it appeared clean and had a hot tub. My friend rarely gets the opportunity to use a hot tub, and I really wanted him to have a chance to relax for three nights and enjoy it. Grant said multiple times that it had been filled with fresh water and scrubed/clean. Fact of the matter is, after using it for one hour we got out to find our skin was so itchy that we had to itch our legs/feet until the point of bleeding. My friend got blood all over one of the rugs (we tried to wash it out). The itching went on all night. Grant then blamed it on stinging nettle from hiking, but then later changed his story. He said he personally scrubbed/cleaned it, but then changed the story to that another person he hired for cleaning did it and used an unfamiliar product that maybe wasn't diluted properly. The fact the story changed so many times leads me to believe no cleaning took place at all. The sides of the tub were slimy and I could feel the slime in the tub. If it had been scrubbed, we wouldn't have felt slime on interior of the walls. This ruined our stay as the tub was why we booked.. :( You can't repeat a vacation.

Everything we expected

  • 5 of 5

Had a super romantic weekend at Grant's cabin. Grant is such a character and we loved meeting him, he toured us around a bit and even gave us rides since it was Dry Dock and we couldn't bring our car! The cabin itself is totally custom made by him, lives on a bit of a big hill up from the shuttle but it was good exercise for us. QUIET is an understatement, the view was incredible--and it was truly a little piece of paradise on an already wonderful Lummi Island. Got to see a doe and her fawns, and hiked some backwoods that were beautiful. Felt like we were the only people on the planet several times throughout the weekend.

Quaint and rustic cabin, great place to unwind and unplug.

  • 4 of 5

Older property, very quaint. Clean accommodations, great view of Bellingham Bay and Mt Baker, especially from the sizeable deck. Peaceful, solitary, great for couples and a dog. Not ideal for larger parties or kids. Friendly host.

Enjoyed the quiet and relative solitude

  • 5 of 5

Grant was very friendly and accommodating for our stay. The ferry ride was enjoyable (and inexpensive, with extra sailings added during our return trip Sunday so not too long of a wait) and we spotted several deer on the drive in.

The cabin is rustic and in a quiet area which allows for a pretty secluded feeling. The water view and morning sun were lovely. The fully fenced outdoor area, deck and attached off-leash wooded hill (which is not fenced and does eventually lead to the road which is quiet but still - be aware) allowed our dogs to have a vacation as well - which was, by far and away, one of the biggest perks of our trip. It was so fabulous to let our dogs have such a long period of time off leash. We spent a great many hours playing board games at the dining table in the living room area. We also all took a lovely bubble bath in the antique tub. If baths aren't your thing, the downstairs shower is small but gets the job done.

The cabin kitchen has all the basic cooking implements you need, but we have a rather particular cook in our group who wished she'd brought a favourite pan and a couple favourite knives so consider bringing along any cooking items you're picky about. That said, everything available was perfectly usable - exactly what you expect when booking a cabin. The master bed was very comfortable but the second bedroom bed was VERY firm. The downstairs daybed was also softer so we all found places to sleep comfortably. There is also a sofa that converts to a bed but we never ended up needing it.

You'll find you will genuinely enjoy your stay here, provided you manage your expectations. You are booking a cabin in the woods on a low-population island, not a hotel or professionally managed property - so it isn't going to look or feel perfect, 'high end' or new. If you're looking to get away from the hustle and bustle (and bring your furbaby(ies) along for the trip), this will serve quite well.

P.S. We lucked into clear skies for one night of the perseid meteor shower and got to sit on the deck in the dark and see a couple shooting stars - one of the highlights of our trip. (We would have had clear skies the whole time if it weren't for the haze from the BC Forest Fires). Had the moon been less full and the haze been clear, we would have spent a lot of time stargazing!!
