THE RETREAT: Designed in classical Hawaiian style, with high ceilings and spacious lanais, and built with local hardwoods, the house features a modern gourmet kitchen with granite countertops and new energy-efficient appliances, a complimentary business center, large private bedrooms, and is decorated with art and furnishings created in Hawaii, Bali, and Thailand. The estate grounds include a private swimming pool, a pool pavilion, and a secluded outdoor shower to enhance your tropical experience. This is Paradise, no matter your purpose. Make it for just the two of you, or invite friends and colleagues. Kaloko Gardens Retreat is ideal for business or pleasure. The house has two dining areas, with seating for ten. The kitchen is fully stocked with gourmet cookware, utensils, dinnerware, and table linens. You will find 100% Kona coffee with a French press and solar kettle, and plenty of other staples. There are three bedrooms. The Makai Master Suite (queen) includes a library, a Bose sound system, and a complete modern office with computer, printer, broadband internet access, and a full set of routine office supplies. The Mauka Suite (queen) offers private access to its own lanai and the outdoor shower, a Sony sound system, and cable TV. The Lani Suite (two twins) includes a library and an office area, with printer and monitor provided, and views of ocean and forest. Bathrooms are stocked with plush towels and bathrobes, and bed linens are 100% Egyptian cotton, 600-thread count. A very high-efficiency washer/dryer system is provided for your convenience. All electricity and hot water are solar-powered – no carbon footprint. The huge lanais, high ceilings, large sliding doors, and local hardwood floors complete the genuine Hawaii experience. Living areas are furnished and decorated with pieces collected on the owner’s travels in Hawaii and around the world. On the estate grounds you can also find the forest “imu,” an operating fire-pit nested among ancient ohia trees, and other secluded locations. Kaloko Gardens Retreat is locally owned and operated by a marine biologist who is a visiting scholar at an Ivy League university and has lived in the islands for many years. About Mark Huntley

I grew up in the US, Germany, Belgium, France, Italy, and UK, went to university in Canada, and began a career in marine biology in San Diego, California. After leading several marine expeditions to the Antarctic and northern polar regions to study the impact of climate change on marine ecosystems, I settled in Hawaii, where I now study sustainable solutions to mitigating climate change.

Before purchasing, I visited more than 60 properties in three days, all within about 15 miles of Kona. This property stood out as an exceptional location to build a house that feels like Hawaii. Half of the 3-acre property is relatively undisturbed native forest - the other half has been lovingly crafted into a series of gardens connected by meandering pathways through an orchard, a vegetable garden, a native Hawaiian forest, and many private places with comfortable seating.

Beautiful location and garden, pool was disappointment.

Amazing gardens. Nice central location. Would have been perfect and an easy 5 star if not for issues with pool. The water was cloudy on arrival. Pool maintenance was contacted by property manager who felt the issue was changes in ph from acid rain.

We stayed for 5 nights and the water was just clearing on the morning of our departure. We selected this location among others because our son wanted a pool, so he was somewhat disappointed that he couldn't use it. Unlucky for us.

Owner's Response: We are glad Brian and his family enjoyed our home and gardens and found the location worked for them. Unfortunately the previous guests, who checked out the morning of Brian's arrival, had turned off the pool pump unbeknownst to us. As soon as we were aware of this we turned it back on however it took a few days for the water to become clear again.

We loved staying at this place. The frogs were amazing and soothing to sleep to at night. The flowers were beautiful and well cared for. We loved the pool and the kitchen and the home itself was very comfortable. We plan to stay here again!

A beautiful and peaceful place to escape in Hawaii

We had a wonderful time at Kaloko Gardens and didn't want to leave! If you are interested in a quiet escape in a comfortable, beautiful, and relaxing home on the Big Island, this is an excellent option. The grounds are beautifully landscaped, making it feel like you are living in your own tropical botanical garden. The house is located in a residential neighborhood, but the grounds are big enough and designed so it is very quiet and private. We were four adults and one infant, and the house worked out great for us in terms of space. We loved hanging out on the expansive porches and down by the pool. The kitchen had everything we needed to cook meals together. The house also has everything you'd need to enjoy activities on the Big Island including snorkel and beach gear.

As other reviews note, it is much cooler at the house (1700 feet above sea level) compared to down at the beach. When we visited in early December, it was a high of 75-77 during the day and low of 62-65 at night. It got pretty cloudy in the middle of the day on some days and on others it was perfectly sunny all day. On cloudy days, the pool was really chilly, but we still managed to use it. It was easy to get down to beautiful beaches (15 min away) where it was warm.

We were a bit worried about other reviews mentioning mosquitoes. In New England, I am a mosquito magnet and get devoured during the summer. I imagined that there would be swarms of mosquitoes and we'd need to be inside the whole time. This was not the case at all for us (in December.... not sure at other times of the year). There were a few mosquitoes around during our stay, but very few and they left us alone. With a bug repellent coil burning in the background, they didn't bother us at all.

I highly recommend Kaloko Gardens if you are looking for a peaceful retreat in Hawaii. We can't wait to return!

Fabulous property

This is a beautiful property and we had a very comfortable and enjoyable stay. We appreciated being away from the hubbub of the big resorts, but still close to great beaches. The house is beautifully decorated with lovely furniture and is well equipped. We would love to go back!

Absolutely perfect!

Let me start off by advising anyone looking at this property to just go ahead and book it, you will not regret it. My fiance (now wife - we got married in the island), a group of friends, and myself stayed at this property for our wedding/trip to the island and absolutely loved the entire experience. The property is perfect, communication with our hosts was easy and pleasant, and the booking/check-in/check-out process was very smooth and easy.

The description of the property is pretty spot on. This property is located at just the perfect distance from the main touristy areas in Kona; far enough that you feel secluded and on your own private resort where no one will bother you, but also close enough that you can get on your car and be at the heart of Ali'i Drive in about 10 minutes. Everything is within a few minutes driving distance, gas station, coffee shops, restaurants, stores like Safeway and Wal-Mart, Kona airport, and the beach. The property is at an elevation of about 1,600 ft, so it is cooler than down at the shore. We stayed for a week mid-October and had high 60s at night and low 80s during the day.

The main house is very comfortable and spacious, and it is fully stocked with mostly anything you could need during your stay there; from kitchen appliances, utensils, glassware, and dinnerware, to bathroom supplies, towels, linens, charcoal for the grill, a whole library, a sound system, a computer with a printer, some outdoor activities gear, and even a welcome basket with fruits coffee and red wine, this house had it all. The only thing you'll need are some groceries if you plan to eat at home, and you'll be set. I would also strongly recommend mosquito repellent. As others have pointed out, the mosquitoes are no joke on this part of the island.

The rest of the property makes you feel like you are at a private resort all to yourself. There's gardens with plenty of trees and foliage, a pool, a yoga studio, and even a fire-pit that is perfect for everyone in your party to gather around in the evening and have a great time.

Kaloko Gardens truly offers a complete vacation experience. Truly looking forward to returning again for our next Hawaii adventure.

Spend an early morning to pick up fresh, local food from the Kona Farmer's Market, fresh fish from Bite-Me Fish Market, grass-fed Big Island beef from Island Naturals. Go to Kua Bay for bodysurfing, swimming, or just hangin' on a white sand beach. Have lunch at the Four Seasons and play golf, hike to a pit crater, or do yoga in the pool pavilion for the afternoon. So many experiences are possible!
