About the property

4 Bedrooms, 2 Bathrooms, Sleeps 11 (2018 - 5 Bedrooms, 3 bath & will sleep 15)

The Exum Beach Cottage - Come relax in our rustic beachfront cottage. Our charming beach house is equipped with an enormous deck featuring 180 degree beach views. The cottage sits at the end of a dead end street, a very short walk from the Oceanana fishing pier. Presently this is a four bedroom 2 full bath homey cottage. It features nostalgic pinewood walls, Central Heat/Air, Cable TV, DVD Player, Apple TV,, Wi-Fi, bluetooth equipped stereo, washer/dryer, and a classic 1950's build style. The cottage has ample parking for a large family or group of friends. This vacation cottage is ideal for a weekend get away or week long retreat for guests more interested in disconnecting from screen time and enjoying face time with one another rocking on the porch or with toes buried in the sand and waves lapping at your feet. The single television on the main floor is purposely small, encouraging our guests to pick up a book or board game and interact with each other. While the home is equipped with WiFi and cable TV we hope that our guests can find time to disconnect from the distractions of computers, mobile phones and television and enjoy classic vacation past times like body surfing, beach walks, cocktails on the deck and watching the sunset. Over the winter of 2018 we will open up the 3rd floor 5th bedroom with attached bath. The room will feature 2 more queens and possibly another single bed. More pictures soon.

About Steve Exum

Steve Exum is the president and principal photographer at Exum Photography, LLC. Exum is a North Carolina native who grew up in Raleigh. Steve, his wife Molly, their daughter Bella and son Sawyer live in Elon, NC with their dog Murphy. We are an adventurous family and the Exum Beach Cottage is our go to home for beach adventure. I manage the rentals on behalf of the owners my mother and father Jim and Judy Exum from Greensboro, NC. From this old house, we surf, skim board, fish, shell hunt, sail, sunbath and yes, even scuba dive. This cottage was built by my grandfather James Gooden Exum, Sr. in the 40’s and was one of the original cottages built on Club Colony Drive. Hurricane Hazel blew it down and my Grandfather rebuilt it in 1955. With it’s nostalgic knotty pine walls, this cottage has been the base for huge Exum Family gatherings, marriages and accommodated countless friends for great beach vacations. She withstood a number of hurricanes and the occasional water spout keeping her visitors and contents safe and dry. We Love this cottage and you will, too.

Steve Exum purchased this cottage in 1955

Why Steve Exum chose Coastal North Carolina

What makes this cottage unique

This house is intoxicating. It's intimate location to the beach, the Oceanna Fishing Pier, Amos Mosquitos Restaurant, Fort Macon Historic sight on a dead end street make it very special.

Notes:
Atlantic Beach, NC and the surrounding area is a great location full of fun things to do while on vacation. Here are just few "must do" outings you might consider planning. Try to visit the historic Civil War fort called Fort Macon only a 5 minute drive from our cottage. Consider visiting the Aquarium in Pine Knoll Shoals. Take a small ferry or sailboat ride out to Cape Lookout lighthouse on the uninhabited Cape Lookout National Seashore, visit historic Beaufort waterfront the second oldest town in North Carolina. While in Beaufort visit the Maritime Museum and see the Blackbeard exhibit with booty from the remains of his sunken ship, the Queen Anne's Revenge discovered in the Beaufort inlet. Definitely plan to go fishing on the Oceana fishing pier for breakfast, or a Margarita at the Barnacle at the end of the pier. Consider eating dinner out at the Sanitary Fishmarket restaurant in Morehead city. Also consider having a meal at my favorite restaurant, Mosquitoes in Atlantic Beach.

A great place for families to spend quality time together!

  • 5 of 5

This cottage has it all! A beautiful location on a nice beach. The beach is gently sloping so one can meander into the ocean quite a ways and it remains shallow. Very close to Fort Macon, a must-see historical area as well as the Aquarium which is world class! View the sunrise and sunset from the ample rear deck! Cook in the well appointed kitchen or take a drive to the Beaufort waterfront for shopping and restaurants! If you like adventure, take the Harker's Island Ferry to the lighthouse and explore the wild shores of the Core Banks, you may just see some wild ponies and you will find many shells to take home! Pack a lunch and drinks and make a day of it! Overall this was a great meet-up for my family of four and my brother's family of 3. Plenty of room to stretch out and the young ladies loved the privacy of the downstairs bedroom and bathroom. We will be coming back for years to come. Thanks Steve!

Owner's Response: Mary, I am so happy your family thoroughly enjoyed the cottage and surrounding area. You did your homework on all the adventure one can find in the area around Atlantic Beach and Beaufort. The huge Cobia your son Charles caught was a site. Fantastic catch. Hope your family can come again! You all are welcome anytime. Cheers - Steve

The awesome deck and the short walk over the dunes to the beach earn this house 5 stars.

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is very clean and well maintained. We liked being able to hose off and enter the basement of the house - it really helped to limit the amount of sand tracked inside. We brought our own chairs, boogie boards, etc., but there were many available for our use in the house. All of the beds were comfortable. We spent most of our time on the deck. We carried the table and chairs up from the basement and ate almost all of our meals there while enjoying the ocean views. It is like sitting on the beach without getting sandy! We did not venture out much, but when we did, restaurants and stores were close and there was very little traffic. The beach was perfect and not at all crowded. We had a wonderful week at Exum cottage and did not want to leave.

Owner's Response: Many Thanks Jean for your kind review. Eating on the porch is a must especially at sunset. Coffee in the morning in the big white rockers is also hard to beat at the Exum Cottage. So glad your family found the cottage to be a relaxing retreat to spend quality time with family! - Steve

Perfect beach cottage!

  • 5 of 5

The Exum beach cottage was perfect for our multigenerational family of nine. As noted in other reviews the view from the deck of the ocean is spectacular. I also liked the path to the beach. Most importantly we were able to include Watson the dog and he appreciated the air conditioning during the hottest part of the day. The three boys stayed in the downstairs space which worked for everyone. We were happy to have such a well equipped kitchen since we had all our meals at Exum. We purchased our seafood at Atlantic Beach Seafood and Fresh Market, prepared it back at the cottage and it was delicious. Our main outing was to Beaufort. If you go don't miss the Old Burying Ground historical cemetery. We also walked along the beach to Fort Macon. Be sure to go around the tip to find the entrance and not try and cut across the sand dunes as one of our party attempted!

Thank you Exum family for sharing your vacation home. It was perfect!

Owner's Response: I am so happy to hear that all generations of your family of nine (including Watson of course) enjoyed the beach cottage and the surrounding area. That walk to Fort Macon can be a real hike. Beaufort has a beautiful waterfront, great restaurants and a pretty cool historic museum. Next time you come, maybe you can try the Aquarium in Pine Knolls Shores. Great fun on a rainy day! - Steve

Could not have been more perfect.

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was perfect for our family of nine and one little dog. Steve Exum could not have been more communicative, helpful, and courteous to us (even when I interrupted him while he was shooting wedding photographs). Steve even called us after our arrival to see how we were doing and if we had found everything in order. The cottage was clean and comfortable, with a view of the ocean from the porch that made for a perfect vacation. All instructions for check-in and check-out were clear and concise. This rental deserves five stars, without question.

Owner's Response: Howard, we are so glad you and your family found this cottage to be all that you hoped for in a vacation. It truly is a classic and timeless location with a wonderful view of the ocean from the porch. I'm here now with my family and just finished a long walk on the beach with our dog and coffee. We are so blessed to get to enjoy this place a few times a year. Hope you make it back next season. 😀 Warmly Steve

Lovely and quaint home on the beautiful ocean front

  • 5 of 5

This is an older home, but has been well kept. The kitchen has everything you would need at a beach home. There is roomy parking in the front for at least 3 cars. Just walk out the back door for easy excess to the beach. Also, Steve, the owner, was such a nice person from whom to rent this property.

Perfect Location, amazing ocean views!

  • 5 of 5

The Exum cottage is the perfect place for a beach getaway. There are nearby restaurants and grocery stores to ensure you are well fed. We stayed with a group of 9 adults and had plenty of room to spread out with the 4 bedrooms. (7 beds!). The best part was the HUGE deck. We ordered take out from the amazing Amos Mosquitos restaurant and dined oceanside on the deck. You'll love walking the beach and listening to the waves crashing. Highly recommend this cottage!
