The Exum Beach Cottage - Come relax in our rustic beachfront cottage! Our charming beach house is equipped with an enormous deck featuring 180-degree beach views. The cottage sits at the end of a dead-end street, a very short walk from the Oceanana fishing pier. This a five bedroom, three full bath homey cottage sleeps 18 people. The 3rd floor is a master suite that sleeps 6 people and includes a small office space. Our cottage features nostalgic pinewood walls, Central Heat/Air, Cable TV, DVD Player, Apple TV, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth equipped stereo, washer/dryer, and a classic 1950's build style. The cottage has ample parking for a large family or group of friends. The television on the main floor is purposely small, encouraging our guests to pick up a book or board game and interact with each other. When you book please indicate the number of beds you would like linens for and I will adjust the linen fee accordingly. The cost for linens and bath towels is $25/per bed. The cottage has 12 beds.

About Steve Exum

Steve Exum is the president and principal photographer at Exum Photography, LLC. Exum is a North Carolina native who grew up in Raleigh. Steve, his wife Molly, their daughter Bella and son Sawyer live in Elon, NC with their dog Murphy. We are an adventurous family and the Exum Beach Cottage is our go to home for beach adventure. I manage the rentals on behalf of the owners my mother and father Jim and Judy Exum from Greensboro, NC. From this old house, we surf, skim board, fish, shell hunt, sail, sunbath and yes, even scuba dive. This cottage was built by my grandfather James Gooden Exum, Sr. in the 40’s and was one of the original cottages built on Club Colony Drive. Hurricane Hazel blew it down and my Grandfather rebuilt it in 1955. With it’s nostalgic knotty pine walls, this cottage has been the base for huge Exum Family gatherings, marriages and accommodated countless friends for great beach vacations. She withstood a number of hurricanes and the occasional water spout keeping her visitors and contents safe and dry. We Love this cottage and you will, too.

Steve Exum purchased this cottage in 1955

Why Steve Exum chose Atlantic Beach

This vacation cottage is ideal for a weekend get away or week long retreat for guests more interested in disconnecting from screen time and enjoying face time with one another rocking on the porch or with toes buried in the sand and waves lapping at your feet.

What makes this cottage unique

This house is intoxicating. Its close proximity to the beach, the Oceanna Fishing Pier, Amos Mosquitos Restaurant, and the Fort Macon Historic site make it very special.

Atlantic Beach, NC and the surrounding area is a great location full of fun things to do while on vacation. Here are just few "must do" outings you might consider planning. Try to visit the historic Civil War fort called Fort Macon only a 5 minute drive from our cottage. Consider visiting the Aquarium in Pine Knoll Shoals. Take a small ferry or sailboat ride out to Cape Lookout lighthouse on the uninhabited Cape Lookout National Seashore, visit historic Beaufort waterfront the second oldest town in North Carolina. While in Beaufort visit the Maritime Museum and see the Blackbeard exhibit with booty from the remains of his sunken ship, the Queen Anne's Revenge discovered in the Beaufort inlet. Definitely plan to go fishing on the Oceana fishing pier for breakfast, or a Margarita at the Barnacle at the end of the pier. Consider eating dinner out at the Sanitary Fishmarket restaurant in Morehead city. Also consider having a meal at my favorite restaurant, Mosquitoes in Atlantic Beach.

Pure relaxation at the edge of the sea

  • 5 of 5

This seaside vacation to me was better than a fancy Caribbean island. It was the simplicity of being on the deck from the early morning through gorgeous sunsets highlighting the fishing pier, usually with a cool breeze taking all worldly worries away. The crashing waves hypnotize you. Never slept better--great bedding and comforts in the house. I would say the house is wonderfully retro--tasteful but not chic. Not extravagant--just honest and basic. The luxury of Steve's place is real communion with the sea, lovely dinners on the deck,

walks on the shore, swimming in the waves, starlit nights, heavenly peacefulness.

Owner's Response: Diane, That is the most accurate description of the experience of staying at the Exum beach cottage ever written. You nailed it. For our family it’s a retreat semi disconnected from the annoying technological devices of life and helps bring us together over meals, beach adventure and board games. It’s authentic . Thank you for your kind description. Warmly - Steve

Great old-style beach home so close to the beach!

  • 5 of 5

We loved staying in this wood-paneled beautiful older beach cottage. So close to the beach and a gorgeous deck with a great view! Everything we could have wanted, we had a great time.

Truly a home away from home...

  • 5 of 5

The Exum Cottage, a rustic throwback to the "real" resort properties of the area, is welcoming and well maintained. The kitchen provides everything anyone could want (unless you need granite countertops - and those have never seemed to improve cooking results!); every window opens and closes; the air conditioning works perfectly; ceiling fans in the main areas and vertical fans in the bedrooms distribute air nicely; the enclosed garage allows for secure storage of bikes and beach equipment; beds are ultra-comfortable. The deck/porch area is where we ate every meal, and from there we watched a few storms gather and then saw some double rainbows and the Cape Lookout lighthouse and the buoys in the sea lanes at night. Having some grass between the house and the beach was refreshing and kept the sand mostly outside! The owner/manager was in touch and available for any questions and was genuinely interested in how we were enjoying our stay. Our stay was memorable, rejuvenating and fun!

Owner's Response: Thank you Rose Marie, I genuinely hope all our guest enjoy the cottage as much as we do. If the walls could talk you simply can not imagine all of the incredible family gatherings the Exum's have experience their literally since my grandfather Jim Exum rebuilt that cottage after hurricane hassle. In one word it is "authentic" . My kids, the 4th generation of Exum's to enjoy the cottage, are equally attached as I am. Thanks again and hope you'll make it back! - Cheers ... Steve

The awesome deck and the short walk over the dunes to the beach earn this house 5 stars.

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is very clean and well maintained. We liked being able to hose off and enter the basement of the house - it really helped to limit the amount of sand tracked inside. We brought our own chairs, boogie boards, etc., but there were many available for our use in the house. All of the beds were comfortable. We spent most of our time on the deck. We carried the table and chairs up from the basement and ate almost all of our meals there while enjoying the ocean views. It is like sitting on the beach without getting sandy! We did not venture out much, but when we did, restaurants and stores were close and there was very little traffic. The beach was perfect and not at all crowded. We had a wonderful week at Exum cottage and did not want to leave.

Owner's Response: Many Thanks Jean for your kind review. Eating on the porch is a must especially at sunset. Coffee in the morning in the big white rockers is also hard to beat at the Exum Cottage. So glad your family found the cottage to be a relaxing retreat to spend quality time with family! - Steve
