Historic Captains Home - On Weskeak River Oyster Farm
average rating of 4.0 based on 1 reviews

Grand home of early seafaring era close to ocean and vibrant contemporary coastal communities

  • 4 of 5

Perfect venue for holiday family gathering; traditional storybook setting with vaulting Victorian ceilings and windows, beautiful floors and careful preservation of gorgeous period details--fireplaces, chandeliers. Modern annex kitchen area with beautiful river view across hayfields. Our three year old grandson was so enchanted with the setting (nooks and crannies for imaginative play) and the huge hallways perfect for remote control car races that he didn't once ask for digital entertainment!

The thoughtful provision of firewood and even a Christmas tree were welcome. The property manager was available and attentive, quickly responding to any questions. The property was well maintained, clean and appeared as described.

We hope to return for a summer visit!

A short drive to Rockland, Owlshead, Thomaston, and all the activities of the mid coast region. Beaches, regional airport, fine dinning, museums, etc. all close by. A short walk to the reversing falls of the tidal Weskeag River. The property is near the Weskeag River Estuary.

The Weskeag River estuary is one of 22 Important Bird Areas in Maine due to the number and diversity of migratory shorebirds, as well as tidal wading birds and water birds. "It's just a mecca--being disturbance-free and offering perfect settings for roosting and feeding," notes Lindsay Tudor, a shorebird biologist with the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (DIF&W). "Ecosystems like this are increasingly vital given how many of these species are in decline."

This property was once the home of George Kittredge. A K-250 personal submarine designed and built by George W. Kittredge. This submarine is on display in South Thomaston, Maine, as a memorial to Kittredge.
