FOR YOU INTERESTED IN MORE OF THE CASALE'S HISTORY and RECONSTRUCTION
This project was exhibited in Milano at the MADE Expo for American Architects in Europe.
It has been reconstructed with very high restrictions imposed by the local Comune
because it was one of the first 'farm/stall' structures transformed (in verticle) to house farmers, finally given the right to leave their Castle dwellings (see history 'Castle del Poggio' You Tube) and live on the land they tended.
Our approach was to use bio local/historic materials to finish the interiors to keep its' local identity.
The Old Casale grew from 1700's and was completed in 1869 to house three families, a giant bread oven and varied court animals. Eight years ago we lovingly reconstructed it, respecting the 'signs' of it's development, salvaging its' materials (terra cotta tiles, local travertine stones, roman tiles) while using modern and bio technology (coccio pisto, calce base paint, double pane chestnut windows and doors, ventilated roofs, subsurface water collectors for irrigation. We introduced full bathrooms which feature ultra modern Duravit/Philip Stark fixtures with Assisi hand made cotto tiles.
The ground floor (once old farmhouse functions) is now the 'communal floor' paved with antique recuperated terra cotta tiles.
The Ancient BREAD BAKING OVEN - is NEW ENTRY. From here you are distributed throughout the house. To your right is the...
OLD KITCHEN-is STILL KITCHEN where the new fireplace recalls the position of the old oven opening. The large window sill was where the bread was placed to you can prepare meals and wash dishes!
The STALL- is the NEW LIVING ROOM and has a olive grove view, valley view through the adjacent new DINING ROOM and a view of roses through the adjoining
NEW ROSA BEDROOM/Ancient CANTINA.
The Ancient CANTINA- is the NEW ROSA BEDROOM. As you desire, 1 double or 2 singles can be arranged upon reservation. It has a view to the rose & herb garden and the olive grove. They have the ROSA BATHROOM w LRG SHOWER/Ancient GOOSE KEEP for their use.
The Ancient GOOSE KEEP - is the ROSA BATHROOM with LARGE SHOWER and has a great valley view! It is the ROSA BEDROOMS BATHROOM. It adjoins the..
Ancient VOLATILE- is the NEW DINING ROOM where they kept various birds, hens ecc., inside. Now it provides a great place to dine in 12 with an extended view from the outside. It's also a great place for children to construct one of our games, play table games, read while parents are enjoying the veranda. It adjoins our new...
TERRACED VERANDA/Ancient PIAZZETTA where they separated various grain for on the naturally exposed stone 'piazzetta '. Here it is the new terrace where everyone stills gathers for dining, reading, being together outdoors enjoying this wonderful panorama under a NEW MOBILE VERANDA or stargazing at night.
The first floor with two distinct areas recalling where the two families lived.
Straight on is a large, high beamed living room with antique fireplace which
adjoins the 'Saffron' bedroom and it's own large bathroom with bathtub. On the right is the 'Pergamena' room which has two sofas becoming two spare single beds. Straight on is the 'Celeste' double bedroom and it's en-suite bathroom with a shower with pull-down seat. On right is the stair to…
the second floor'Salvia' Suite, also known as the honeymoon/treehouse suite, it has it's own en-suite bathroom with a 'panoramic' bathtub and a meditation space with small windows observing the entire property. This suite is fought over between all the guests but usually parents or 'to be' parents win out!
The 'piazza' in front with an open view to the valley is multi-functional. You can enjoy the sunset with an aperitif in the two large wicker chairs, relax in the hammock under the almond, the rattan swing hanging from the mulberry or just grab one of our blankets to lie on our bio lawn! Under the giant elm tree we have a large ping pong table which also serves as a nice aperitif, buffet, decide!
Those of you who know the term 'Air Force Brat' know I have lived out of a suitcase, following my father 'The Chef' all over Europe and USA. At the age of 13 my father bought land in the country where we (he and I) built the house where my parents live. During architecture school (SCI-ARC, Los Angeles) I took the first chance to return to my beloved Europe, I've been here ever since - in Milano, Rome, Paris, Brazil and now I'm between Tuscany and Umbria . I pursued my career while being a travelling manager's wife (relocating, entertaining, cooking dinners, organizing outings ecc.).
Now I'm (still) a career mom of two patient children who spent most their infancy following me (or carried) to various construction sites in all of the above cities!
I'm currently dividing my working time (with our dog Pepe Jr.) between this lovely property in Umbria with an olive grove making extra virgin olive oil, another in Tuscany.
I like to meet new people and cultures, design, sketch, build, travel, sail, bike, hike, drive, cook, gardening, gathering and producing olive oil, activities with children, animals (we have a border collie) and music of all kinds.
I dislike cruises, motorboats and skis.
Debra Carol Haddock purchased this villa in 2004
I was living in Rome when I discovered nearby Umbria and it's beauty! My friends and collegues, Sara & Angelo and I discovered this old abandoned house on a typical autumn October day after we dropped our children off at school (in Rome) that morning. We were standing in 3 cm of water in front of the old house and couldn't even see the panorama for the meters of overgrown briars! Once I managed to get a peek at the valley down below, I fell in love with this place. Then we had lunch at a nearby restaurant (capelletti con tartufo) when I discovered the owner already had been given a deposit by a future buyer.Nontheless I got permission from the owners to picnic there with the children on Sundays.
In an hour's time we were having a picnic, exploring and escaping the stress of Rome.
In February they called to let me know that the future buyer had withdrew the deposit and if I was still interested. That is when Sara, Angelo and I started working together and discovering the simple yet down to earth local cuisine.
Our panorama will make your spirits fly! It seems to put any troubled soul at peace a problems in their perspective. We've even had guests who began to cry - perhaps because of its' vast open space (?), other who call it 'paradise'. Whatever it may be, it brings people together to enjoy. At night you can see the stars and all the lights and fireworks from all the other towns from far away yet still sit in silence.
The whole property is sunny all year and above the clouds which accumulate in the valley. It is surrounded by olive trees from which we make our own extra virgin olive oil as well as other produce which we introduced later. We grow our own herbs and fruit without pesticides and the lawn as well. We also managed to collect all that extra subsurface water and we water our lawn, keeping it green even during the hot summer- and pesticide free! During the construction the windows were positioned in a way to have a 'picture' from every window frame, whether it's the castle, valley, giant elm, almond or olive trees, it is always 'picture perfect'.
We are conveniently located on the border of Umbria, Lazio and Tuscany which makes day trips easy in Tuscany, Lazio and Umbria!
Visit our attached film to see the history and itineraries regarding its' Etruscan history.
Rome is one hour away while still in Lazio are the thermal baths in Viterbo, Villa d'Este's waterfalls, Parco dei Mostri in Bomarzo, Cività di Bagnoregio is a UNESCO medieval village to visit only on foot by a bridge, Bolsena and its' lake, Gradoli..
Tuscany visit Pitigliano, another UNESCO medieval city, Sorano...
Orvieto is only 20 min. away with its' magnificent Duomo, Pozzo St. Patrizio, underground tours, Todi is 25 min., Dunarobba's petrified forest..the list is long, Alviano's castle and their pool has a small waterslide and tennis as does Castiglione in Teverina, The list is long for places to discover. The WWF Oasis for migratory birds is below us on the Tiber River.

Castello del Poggio di Guardea- visit the castle (when opened by owner) to see how well it has been restored from its' walls to the inner structure from the Byzantine period.
