About Kristin O'Connell
Originally from Boston, I moved to Tahoe in my 20's to ski and decided to make it my home base. I continued to return to Cape Cod every summer per my family tradition and still do now with my own children. Shortly after building this dream home, my husband and I started traveling to Costa Rica to surf and rented out our home to pay for our trips. About 7 years ago we traded in our skis for surfboards and made the full time move to Nosara, Costa Rica. However, the mountains were calling us back, so recently we decided to start spending more time back in Truckee. Since I love creative projects I decided to redecorate and refurnish our entire home with custom furniture imported from Bali. Now we split our time between Truckee, Costa Rica, and Cape Cod.
Why Kristin O'Connell chose Truckee
I moved to Lake Tahoe 20 years ago and a few years later bought my first home just a few streets over from this property. I used to hike the trails and when I saw that there was land for sale I jumped at the opportunity. I built this house 10 years ago and it was my dream project. I wanted to build something modern and different than the typical cabin but that still felt like a mountain home. I loved creating a different look using many different materials like steel, concrete, glass and fir wood. I feel it has a unique yet timeless style and more so now with the new decor and interior design. The new furnishings are antique and custom made teak furniture from Bali which offer an eclectic and Bohemian style that blends nicely with the modern features. I absolutely love it, I hope you do too!
What makes this House unique
I love entertaining and this home was built to have friends and family come and enjoy the mountains. It was built with the intention of providing a spacious and relaxed retreat feeling and a place where you never wanted to leave. Since the upstairs family room and second master have large doors, it feels like a separate apartment. This is great for sharing the house with another family or letting children or teenagers have their lounge area without hearing them! The downstairs great room is my favorite to just stare out the windows and get lost in the peacefulness of the trees. Nearly every window looks out to huge ponderosa pine trees. The kitchen is my absolute favorite and if you like to cook you will love all the space, 2 dishwashers, and my special treat...a steam oven! The extra large island has 5 chairs around it so you can hold court while cooking, and still socialize with others in the living and dining areas. We have had many great holidays here! I hope you enjoy our home as much as we do!

Our party of 9 adults really enjoyed our stay. The kitchen was perfect. My only minor compliant (my fault for not following up) is that the main floor master bath is not really accessible (sink or shower).
Great, spacious house!
The house was a perfect base for our group. The house is really spacious and comfortable. Plus a wide-open kitchen for cooking meals as a group, and a lovely back patio to enjoy meals under the pines. We really enjoyed our stay!
We loved the place and had a great time. Wonderful ambience. trampoline was a huge hit with the kids. Hot tub a plus. Lots of space, no crowded feeling. prompt mgt response to any questions. would definitely come back.
Love this house!!
Absolutely loved the house...it was spotless, well appointed and the property manager was especially helpful! Our kids loved the hot tub and big tv room, and the adults enjoyed cooking meals in the huge kitchen. Lots of privacy for 3 families and we even brought our dog!
We highly recommend it and will definitely be back!
Thank you Natalie! It was a pleasure to have your 3 families stay with us! I am happy to hear everyone enjoyed themselves. Come back again!
Tahoe Family reunion
This review was long overdue but wanted to say thank you to the homeowners and the property manager for such a wonderful vacation. So wonderful, that we reserved this house twice in the past three months. Once in December for my birthday for some early season skiing and again last week. The photos actually don’t do it justice the place is modern, clean and huge!!.
In the town of Truckee, which has mostly ski cabins and log homes, this home is gorgeous And is a stand out from the rest.
Concrete polished floors, a massive great room which leads into the open kitchen (the kitchen island is larger than my living room in San Francisco), tastefully decorated furniture from, I think Bali (?} ... the whole place made me not want to leave, ever.
It’s the sole reason why I created a small family reunion last week at this house. There were 4 couples/ 5 kids and there was more than enough room. Thank you guys for such a great stay and we will be back..
THANK YOU for your kind review, Steve.
We are happy you and your family enjoyed our home, please come back anytime!
Beautiful home, great location, excellent host
We had a wonderful stay at Modern Mountain Zen. First of all, there was a huge blizzard coming so the host let us check in first thing in the morning to avoid the worst of the snow. Second, the house is large with big spaces that are well appointed and comfortable. I loved the big open floor plan downstairs that allowed us to be cooking, playing board games, eating, and relaxing by the fire all together. Despite the open floor plan, the bedrooms upstairs stayed nice and quiet for our friends with babies. I think it's worth noting that the downstairs master bedroom is right off the living room separated by a sliding frosted door which definitely allows in light and noise from the living area. Also, one of the other king bedrooms upstairs comes off the closed in family room, so you have to walk through the family room to get to that bedroom. But still, the house is large, with a lot of sleeping spaces and bathrooms, and we had a really nice time as a group of 14 adults. We would definitely go back. Also of note, the glass on the gas fireplace gets really hot and is right in the reach of toddlers/children, so when the toddler was awake we had to keep it off to prevent him from burning himself. Conveniently, there was a child gate for the stairs at the house already.
Thank you Alia!
