About Denise Napoli

We use North Shore when it is not rented as a get-a-way from the Chicago land area. Our daughter who is nine enjoys bringing her friends for trips to Murphy's Mall and other local shopping and hangouts.

Denise Napoli purchased this house in 2012

Why Denise Napoli chose South Haven

South Haven is a quaint town that offers more than the basics for a vacation area. Beach access, longer daylight time, beautiful sunsets, and long walks on the beach are most memorable for this vacation property. Only 2.5 hours from the suburbs of Chicago makes J&D North Shore Cottage an easy place to visit any time.

What makes this house unique

North shore is unique because it is a quiet retreat that offers all the amenities a family will need for a vacation.

Notes:
The house is located 2 miles from the downtown area. 1st Street Beach is ¼ of a mile, or about a 10-15 min walk. I access 1st Street Beach beach by walking to the beach and using the stairs. I have not been to the wineries in the area. However, there is a winery downtown SH with a cool ambiance 12 Corners and Channel Wine Bar. The Dutch Farm: http://www.dutchfarmmarket.com/ The blueberries and fresh fruit pies are always wonderful. There is a farmers market downtown on Saturday during the summer. They have a lot of great things like handmade soap, organic cheeses, veggies, pies, honey, and much more. Things to do: The Tipsy Brush is wine and painting downtown SH. You may need a reservation. Phoenix Street cafe for a brunch and drinks. This is also downtown SH. Su Casa Mexican is fresh Mexican with awesome beverages. The Idler Riverboat is open for on a boat type of bar and food. This is on the river, great views and the boat does not move. The house does have WIFI.

Best VRBO experience ever!

  • 5 of 5

We are veteran VRBO renters. We traveled throughout the US and Europe using VRBO. Our rental experience was the best. Denise cares about her property (it shows) and about her renters. She is very attentive, but not intrusive. You are going to love renting from her.

THE LOCATION: It is a lovely, updated house in a neighborhood that is one block off of Lake Michigan. You feel like you are isolated (you have nice neighbors including one in the back of the yard.) Quickly you can walk to the beach (5-10 minute) and walk to downtown South Haven (2 mile walk -- we did it several times). The house has sand chairs and beach umbrellas and a cart to use to carry them to the beach. I LOVED the Kal-Haven bike trail and there were plenty of running routes from the house. (I was training for a triathlon while vacationing.) The streets around South Haven and rural Van Buren County are perfect for biking long, easy miles. I biked to Saugatuck on day (a short, easy 20 mile ride). I also biked to Paw Paw (via streets-32 miles).

THE HOUSE: It is a comfortable house. The beds are cozy and my kids didn't want to get up and repeatedly told me how much they loved them. I found the bed to be comfortable, but a bit hot -- it felt like it had a waterproof cover, but upon checking it was not a cover but probably the mattress. The bathroom was fabulous and large and accommodated two people at the same time, making shower times quick. But, there is also a powder room for those who need only a toilet and/or sink.

The kitchen is beyond "well-stocked." The pans are quality pans and it isn't missing one gadget. There even was a ice cream shake maker (which we didn't use.) You can tell that the owner uses the house herself and hasn't just stocked it with cheap dime store pans.

There are plenty of decks for those who like the sun or those who don't. My kids often were found outside on the deck reading books. The best part, however, are the sofas in the family room. They are very comfortable, quality leather sofas. The recliner also was comfortable and a favorite of my husband who would take a nap there. We only used the cable for streaming and internet and it was lightening fast. Cell phone reception was not an issue for us (Verizon plan).

THE OWNERS: Denise make renting a breeze. She was attentive and helpful. She didn't act like she didn't really want to rent the house. But instead, she seemed to really enjoy sharing her treasure. Rent this gem!

Overall a nice home

  • 3 of 5

This property is pretty good for a short stay, with a few people. The house is very nice, and provided a great getaway spot for our group of 4 and a 5 month old. We were able to relax, enjoy ourselves, and walk to town.

There are many great attributes of this property, and a few pieces that I felt weren't so great...

I think that the "About the property" first line is misleading. ("2 decks, 3 Bedroom, 2 Baths and a Quiet Retreat Close to the Beach") There is 1 full bathroom, and 1 half bathroom aka no shower/bath. It is listed again at the end of the initial paragraph that there are 2 baths -- this is misleading.

The good:

The kitchen is great, and easy to use. The owners have every pot and pan you'd need -- it's so easy to live here. The decks are great, and the grill is an added bonus.

The meh:

The beach is really a 15-20 minute walk, and we're all relatively in shape and can walk quickly. The first beach is very small, and more of a grassland area. You'll need to walk to the 2nd beach landing (Oak Beach) to get a better vibe.

The owner leaves 2 rolls of toilet paper in each bathroom -- I don't find that to be very hospitable. Also, there was an odd odor in the house. Also, we were told to bring our own towels, there weren't even kitchen towels :/ We were a little disappointed that we had to go over to the local Walmart to replace the propane tank.

Overall, it's a nice home, great for small groups/small families.

Owner's Response: Hello Esther, I'm sorry you felt mislead about the description of the property. As we discussed on the phone and what is written online is accurate about the home. Online I ask that renters bring their own towels. 2 rolls of toilet paper per bathroom to get you started is discussed and provided. Online it also states there is one full bathroom and a powder room. We also discussed that town is 2 miles from the house. I'm not sure what was missed then in the description online through HomeAway or VRBO and our phone call? Please note this is a personal home and to provide hotel like features is not something we strive for.

Beautifully appointed & decorated.

  • 4 of 5

This is a well appointed home, thoughtfully decorated and appointed. It was perfect for our needs and very comfortable and clean. The shower surround has a small orange stain(I assume from the well water)but worked just fine. You need to bring/buy drinking water per the owner. It was nice having the fire pit in the back too, although we only used it once. Overall, very nice home and close to beach access.

Owner's Response: Hello Eileen, I'm so glad you enjoyed the cottage. You were a delight to have and work with. People who live in the neighborhood do drink the well water. I prefer not too. Thanks for the reminder to all who read reviews and will stay at our cottage.

Comfortable place to stay in South Haven

  • 4 of 5

Had a great, relaxing week in South Haven with my husband and two boys. House is very nice inside (love all of the antique/seaside decor) and has everything you need for cooking, time at the beach and enjoying the outside. Owner responded to my questions right away and was really easy to work with. House was very clean when we got there (we tried to leave it that way as best as we could, :-) ) All appliances, lights, plumbing, etc. worked nicely. Quiet beach is a short walk from the house. No complaints! Thanks again!

We couldn't have asked for more!

  • 5 of 5

The house was very nice and well maintained. The kitchen was stocked with lots of items you wouldn't normally expect to find in a rental. We had everything we needed, and there were more small things supplied than we would even have guessed! And the fire pit was awesome, and stocked with wood.

Best of all, Denise was very proactive in getting all the information we needed to us. She was very conscientious about making sure we had everything we needed; all information about the house, the beaches, the community, shopping, etc.

Thanks for a great experience!

Denise, everything about our beach vacation at your place was perfect!

  • 5 of 5

Sun, Sand and Serenity was buffed up and awaiting our arrival. We loved that everything was provided. All the necessities were well stocked, which was something of a surprise to us---you, know, tp, coffee filters, lots of dish towels, the little red wagon for toting toddlers to the beach (AND the wonderful beach umbrella, to boot!).

So clean. So well thought out. As you come in the front door, there are a wall of hooks and a long runner below, for parking all the family shoes, hats, beach bags. Front deck and back deck, to deal with the sun at any time of day. And the back deck is a great safe place for little ones to play, right off the kitchen/dining. The half bath at the other end of the house from where tots are sleeping.

You can even walk to town, if you are a walker. Yet you have your own, nearly private 1st Street Beach, a short, lovely stroll away.

Excellent setup in so many ways. Thank you, Denise.
