This is a true country retreat at its best, pairing comfort and spaciousness with simplicity and a sense of calm. The home boasts four bedrooms plus a study with a top-of-the-line pullout sofa (no flimsy mattresses here); four full bathrooms, including two with bathtubs; two separate living rooms with working fireplaces; a sun room with a view over a verdant field of wildflowers and a terraced backyard with a heated pool and hot tub.
I'm a children's and young adult novelist, a dog-lover, and nature enthusiast who enjoys the great outdoors year-round. But I'm equally a fan of great food, wine, and cultural events, which is why I fell in love with the Hudson Valley: the Hudson Valley unifies stunning rural beauty (farms, orchards, and vineyards) with a sophisticated cultural heritage and a vast array of fabulous bars, restaurants, and performance centers.
Laura Schechter purchased this chateau / country house in 2013
I fell in love with upstate New York early in 2010, on an autumn trip to Copake Lake. I was astounded by the beauty of the foliage, the hiking, and the close proximity to some of the best restaurants in the entire state (including New York City). I came back every chance I could, staying at the charming B&Bs scattered around Huson and renting a house in the summertime. But it wasn't until I found the house on Twin Brook Road--sprawling, comfortable, and yet intimate and serene--that I knew I needed permanent roots in the country. It remains my favorite place in the world. I love enjoying Christmas mornings by the fireplace and stomping to the jacuzzi in the snow; I love autumn apple-picking trips with friends and summer evenings grilling on the front porch or night swimming by the light of the tikki torches.
We loved our stay - we had everything we needed and Laura was incredibly attentive! We love to cook and the kitchen was full of the supplies we needed and the space required to prepare food for such a big group of people. The pool was awesome, the yard and surrounding flora peaceful and private. We also loved that each couple had a nice room, there were plenty of bathrooms to share and space for children to play outside. Thank you so much!!
This spacious home is beautifully decorated and impeccably clean. The kitchen and outdoor grill has every cooking amenity you could possibly want. The surrounding area is gorgeous, especially if you enjoy hiking. Not to mention the pool and hot tub, which we enjoyed everyday. I've always enjoyed the homes we rented through HomeAway. This one far exceeded our expectations. We hope to return again.

Came up from NYC for a weekend away with a large group of family and friends.
The house is fantastic. Comfortable beds, well equipped kitchen, nice hot tub, and great rooms for gathering and playing board games.
Our group of 10 had a wonderful time staying at this rental over NYE. The house is set on a very private country road with few houses nearby. The front looks out over rolling hills, and the backyard has a great patio leading up to the hot tub and fenced-in pool. Inside, the house was very comfortable and nicely furnished. We spent a lot of time cooking and baking, and were psyched with how well stocked the kitchen was. The fireplaces and hot tub were really the icing on the cake. We would definitely return in the future!
I have stayed at this house several times now--a few times just with my husband and daughter, or with one other family (there are two separate "wings," each with two bedrooms and a bathroom, making it ideal for multiple families!) I've also come up with a group of girlfriends. There's a massive kitchen, a beautiful pool out back, the hot tub is in great condition, it's beautiful to take walks along the tree-lined dirt road, and it's fairly short driving distance from a great apple orchard, as well as the town of Hudson (which has amazing shopping and restaurants.) Really ideal for a group of people who mostly want to relax in the country, maybe with the occasional fancy dinner out. It should be noted that this is really more like a FIVE bedroom, because the study downstairs has a very comfortable pull-out couch. Owner keeps everything neat, and the appliances are up to date. Would totally visit again!
Enjoy the best of both worlds: this deeply serene rural retreat is equidistant from the bustling and completely rehabbed town of Hudson, where antique stores, new clothing designers, and hot restaurants compete for space; and Great Barrington, known for its art galleries, music and theater events, and classic downtown. Also nearby is the famous Tanglewood Music Center, a must for outdoor concerts and live events, and to several fabulous ski areas, including Catamount and Jiminy Peak.
