Newly Renovated Charming Vintage Cottage Retreat – Private on 40 Acres

Bedrooms 3
Space 1,300 sq. ft.
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 2 - 3 nights

About the property

3 Bedrooms, 2 Bathrooms, Sleeps 8

Cottage Retreat is the new sister property of 2 Bedroom Valerian Retreat - winner of over 65 Five Star Reviews (vrbo 462086 - 3 miles away on route 49. In fact, together the two cabins located near each other are perfect for a large family reunion.)

The Cottage Retreat is charming with a century old history. While fully maintaining the charm of its history, the cottage has been brought into current times with all the modern conveniences.

In the cottage you’ll find all the amenities you will need in this newly renovated (September 2015) 3 bedroom cozy cottage with 2 full baths. When you walk into Cottage Retreat, you won't find the musty stuffiness, typical of many vacation rentals. There is all new vintage furniture. The modern kitchen has all new solid stone surface counters and is decorated to look and feel like an old style farm house. The cottage decor is professionally done to feel comfy with great function. There are 3 flat screen TV's, free Wi-Fi and some cell services that work well (Verizon has been two or more bars). The cottage can sleep 8 comfortably. There are two outside sitting areas - one is a front porch looking into the forest and the other belongs to the master bedroom with its own private deck to sit, allowing some private time. A bbq and picnic table are set in the woods along with a rock fire pit. The outside area is large and level, making it a great place for kids to play, ride bikes and explore nearby.

The living room, dining area and kitchen are all open, allowing you to enjoy watching your favorite movies or shows and to stay warm with the fireplace in the cooler months. We have central air-conditioning and heat for your comfort any time of the year and an all new easily accessible laundry area. Here is another nice unique feature - you won't be bothered while trying to sleep by creaky floorboards or people walking above - the downstairs master bedroom has no second floor above it.

Your new home is a two story farm house cottage with pine accents from the natural surroundings. You’ll find two bedrooms upstairs and 1 bedroom downstairs with its own bath. Natural materials were used to accent the home’s history lending to its warmth and the charm of times gone by. Look and you’ll see wood in the home that's nearly 100 years old. The floors upstairs are original, but reworked during the special renovation.

Set on 40 acres, the property will invite you to take hikes and enjoy the forested and scenic views. You can see the Sierras from locations on the property. Peace and quiet are the best things you’ll notice when you stay at the cottage. The cottage is set back just off the main route 49 and is half way between two entrances to Yosemite Park. You’ll want to sample both easy but different drives into Yosemite - either via the west entrance with hwy 140 along the valley floor beside the Merced River or via the south entrance with hwy 41 through the Sierra mountains.

Come and visit. You won’t want to leave.

The Cottage Retreat is a great starting location for day trips to many points of interest:

1. To Yosemite west entrance –

Go north on route 49 to reach the arch rock highway 140 entrance that takes you through the historic town of Mariposa and along the valley floor of the scenic Merced River canyon. It is a beautiful drive which will take you about 45 minutes to an hour to reach the park. There are many places along the road to stop and enjoy the wild and scenic river. This area is known for spectacular wild flower viewing.

2. To Yosemite south entrance –

Go south on route 49 to reach Oakhurst - a larger town with many services, dining and shopping options. In Oakhurst, you will turn off to highway 41 east to wind your way up the mountain into Yosemite Park through the quaint little village of Fish Camp and Wawona – both places of many interests. Near Wawona is the must see of the Mariposa Grove of giant redwoods. As you drive further toward Yosemite just after the tunnel, be sure to pull off to see the spectacular view of the Yosemite valley from above.

3. Bass lake is located fifteen minutes from Oakhurst. It is a hopping place during the warm weather for water sports and just catching some sun and a picnic for the day. Bass lake offers water sports rentals, shops, casual as well as fine dining options. 'Ducey's on the Lake' is a favorite restaurant.

4. There are 3 local golf courses just minutes away: Sierra Meadows, River Creek and Wawona, the latter is just inside Yosemite.

5. During the winter months you can travel to badger pass to enjoy downhill and cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.

6. Many of the communities have many other activities throughout the year! On local websites you can find events like festivals, the arts and wineries to explore. Mariposa has a zip line and river rafting in the summer, as well as horseback riding on forested trails.

7. Mariposa has its own airport just 10 minutes from town and 20 minutes from the cabin. Car rentals are available at the airport with advance reservations.

8. Fresno international Airport is about 1 hour and 15 minute drive to the cabin.

About Michelle Oldson

I was brought up on the east coast with four seasons. Later moving to southern California, I had the good fortune to travel to Mariposa and Yosemite during the winter season to find a truly unique splendor. I decided that this was where I would get in touch with nature.

Michelle Oldson purchased this cottage in 2012

Why Michelle Oldson chose Yosemite

This property is unique as it sits so quietly and privately surrounded by 40 acres of forest and fields at 3200 feet. Yet easily accessible from Route 49 only a mile away.

What makes this cottage unique

Bring a book and get ready to enjoy the peace and rustic beauty from one of the two large decks overlooking the woods. This home will take you back a century with the original design elements and redone materials, while maintaining the up-to-date conveniences.

Great Quiet Getaway

  • 5 of 5

The cabin is very nicely appointed, cozy and relaxing. Drive to yosemite, visit Mariposa or relax at the cabin - all of it is lovely. Would recommend to anyone as a relaxing vacation spot - especially bird watchers. There's a sweet little pond on the property as well that has a few turtles living in it - fun to find and watch!

Bring binoculars, bug spray and sunscreen :)

(Michelle, can you drop some rocks/gravel into the bigger holes in the driveway? It was a bit tricky to navigate a loaded car and try not to scrape out the bottom of the car.)

Cozy Retreat near Yosemite

  • 5 of 5

It was so exciting to find a clean, cozy well equipped cottage for a weekend away with family. We spent the days in Yosemite. It rained nearly our entire stay, but we enjoyed listening to the rain, and relaxing indoors. Before we left we were able to enjoy a fire in the fire pit outside. Our stay was too short and have already booked a return visit this year. Thank you!

A hidden treasure!

  • 5 of 5

We were from LA and meeting couple friends from the bay area in Mariposa to visit Yosemite National Park over the weekend. We found this little cottage about an hour away from the park and thought we would give it a try based on the pictures on the site. I was a bit skeptical when we arrived at the cottage especially our GPS stopped in the middle of nowhere and no house to be found. I guess we arrived at the actual property line but the actual cottage is about another 2 min drive down the dirt road. Long story short, when we entered the cottage, we were all so surprised and impressed by how impeccable the house was. It looks like a model home that I would consider buying. It's clean, nicely decorated, all appliances seem brand new and spacious for the 5 adults plus 2 furry friends. The setting is very secluded and quite. We built bon fire in the back and made smores. It was a fantastic little house we all very much enjoyed. Thanks Michelle for also being very communicative. We will definitely be back and refer all of friends to stay here!
