Overview

About the property

3 Bedrooms, 2 Bathrooms, Sleeps 8

The Cottage Retreat is charming with a century old history. While fully maintaining the charm of its history, the cottage has been brought into current times with all the modern conveniences.

In the cottage you’ll find all the amenities you will need in this recently renovated 3 bedroom cozy cottage with 2 full baths. When you walk into Cottage Retreat, you won't find the musty stuffiness, typical of many vacation rentals. There is all new vintage furniture. The modern kitchen has all new solid stone surface counters and is decorated to look and feel like an old style farm house. The cottage decor is professionally done to feel comfy with great function. There are 3 flat screen TV's, free Wi-Fi and some cell services that work well (Verizon has been two or more bars). The cottage can sleep 8 comfortably with central air conditioning and heating. There are two outside sitting areas - one is a front porch looking at the forest and the other belongs to the master bedroom with its own private deck to sit, allowing some private time. A bbq and picnic table are set in the woods along with a rock fire pit. The outside area is large and level, making it a great place for kids to play, ride bikes and explore nearby.

Your new home is a two story farm house cottage with pine accents from the natural surroundings. You’ll find two bedrooms upstairs and 1 bedroom downstairs with its own bath. Natural materials were used to accent the home’s history lending to its warmth and the charm of times gone by. Look and you’ll see wood in the home that's about a 100 years old. The floors upstairs are original, but reworked during the special renovation.

The living room, dining area and kitchen are all open, allowing you to enjoy watching your favorite movies or shows and to stay warm with the fireplace in the cooler months. We have central air-conditioning and heat for your comfort any time of the year and an all new easily accessible laundry area with washer and dryer. Here is another nice unique feature - you won't be bothered while trying to sleep by creaky floorboards or people walking above - the downstairs master bedroom has no second floor above it.

If you need more space for a family reunion or get together of friends, a few hundred feet away, we have our sister property - the remarkable 2 bedroom Log House Retreat (Home Away # 3519215) completed in November of 2017. And 3 miles away is our 2 bedroom Valerian Retreat - (vrbo #462086) winner of over 80 Five Star reviews.

Set on 40 acres, the property will invite you to take leisurely hikes and enjoy the forested and scenic views. You can see the Sierras from locations on the property. Peace and quiet are the best things you’ll notice when you stay at the cottage. The cottage is set back just off the main route 49, near the historic town of Mariposa and is half way between two entrances to Yosemite Park. You’ll want to sample both easy but different drives into Yosemite - either via the west entrance with HWY 140 along the valley floor beside the Merced River or via the south entrance with HWY 41 through the Sierra mountains.

This location is a great place to retreat to after a busy day with the crowds of summer in Yosemite. The cabin is also a great hideaway in the fall, winter and spring. As the temperature drops, the property, with its special setting, may welcome you with a beautiful snowscape.

Come and visit! You won’t want to leave.

The Cottage Retreat is a great starting location for day trips to many points of interest:

1. To Yosemite west entrance –

Go north on route 49 to reach the arch rock highway 140 entrance that takes you through the historic town of Mariposa and along the valley floor of the scenic Merced River canyon. It is a beautiful drive which will take you about 45 minutes to an hour to reach the park. There are many places along the road to stop and enjoy the wild and scenic river. This area is known for spectacular wild flower viewing.

2. To Yosemite south entrance –

Go south on route 49 to reach Oakhurst - a larger town with many services, dining and shopping options. In Oakhurst, you will turn left onto highway 41 east to wind your way up the mountain into Yosemite Park through the quaint little villages of Fish Camp and Wawona – both places of many interests. Near Wawona is the must see Mariposa Grove of giant redwoods. As you drive further toward Yosemite just after the tunnel, be sure to pull off to see the spectacular view of the Yosemite valley from above.

3. Bass Lake is located fifteen minutes from Oakhurst. It is a hopping place during warm weather for water sports and just catching some sun and a picnic for the day. Bass Lake offers water sports rentals, shops, casual as well as fine dining options. 'Ducey's on the Lake' is a favorite restaurant.

4. There are 3 local golf courses just minutes away: Sierra Meadows, River Creek and Wawona; the latter is just inside Yosemite.

5. During the winter months you can travel to Badger Pass to enjoy downhill and cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.

6. Many of the communities have many other activities throughout the year! On local websites you can find events like festivals, the arts and wineries to explore. Mariposa has a zip line and river rafting in the summer, as well as horseback riding on forested trails.

7. Mariposa has its own airport just 10 minutes from town and 20 minutes from the cabin. Car rentals are available at the airport with advance reservations.

8. Fresno international Airport is about 1 hour and 15 minute drive to the cabin.

Log House Retreat is owned by Cottage Retreats LLC.

About Ted B

I was brought up on the east coast with four seasons. Later moving to California to work as a physician, I had the good fortune to travel to Mariposa and Yosemite during the winter season to find a truly unique splendor. I decided that this was the ideal place to go for rest and to get back in touch with nature.

Ted B purchased this cottage in 2012

Why Ted B chose Mariposa

This property is unique as it sits so quietly and privately surrounded by 40 acres of forest and fields at 3200 feet. Yet easily accessible from Route 49 only a mile away.

What makes this cottage unique

Bring a book and get ready to enjoy the peace and rustic beauty from one of the two large decks overlooking the woods. Ready to take a walk? No need to go looking elsewhere, when you are ready to explore nature. You'll find carved paths traversing the property's 40 acres.

This home will take you back a century with the original design elements and redone materials, while maintaining the up-to-date conveniences.

Peaceful mountain retreat perfect for families

  • 5 of 5

We spent Spring Break here and loved every minute. It is a historic cabin that has been renovated with plenty of comfortable and modern amenities including a dishwasher, Wifi, and central heating and A/C. Our 3 kids loved all the wildlife - deer, wild turkeys, hawks, frogs in the nearby pond, and bunnies (perfect for Easter) along with smores around the outdoor fire pit. We loved the quiet seclusion and relaxing on the back porch after a long day of hiking and fishing. We spent our days hanging out in Mariposa, Oakhurst, Bass Lake, and the Merced River and looked forward to our quiet evenings back at the cabin for dinner next to the fireplace. We are hoping to come back to this amazing location.

Great Stay

  • 5 of 5

We stayed four nights at the Cottage Retreat. The cabin was clean and cozy. We enjoyed the sunrise each morning and it was peaceful and quite on the property. We also used the fire pit outside and and fireplace each night. It was a great place to came back to after a long day of hiking Yosemite. The drive to Yosemite was about an hour and the nearest town (Mariposa) is about 15 min. away. Mariposa has some great options to grab coffee and a lunch before your trip to Yosemite (Pony Expresso and Sweetwater Deli).

The one con is that the it is listed that there are two queen beds. The downstairs bed is a very small queen. I believe it is more a full bed and there are full sheets on it. We are use to a king bed and we would like something like that in a master bedroom.

Owner's Response: Hello Sarah, I am very glad you had such a nice time. I wanted to address your concern about the size of the master bedroom bed. I measured it and it is, in fact, a Queen size (60 inch wide by 80 inch long). What may have thrown things off is our topper that guests have found so comfortable. It is in fact an inch narrower on each side. I hope that helps and we look forward to your next visit. Best wishes, Ted

Perfect cottage

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay at this delightful cottage, using it as a base to explore Yosemite National Park (about 1.5 hours to Yosemite Valley). It is beautifully renovated and presented, and everything has been thought of. The beds and bedding are super comfy, just what is needed after a long day’s hiking. The kids loved the space to run around outside, and the sunrise over the Sierra’s is picture perfect from the upstairs bedroom. The cottage was spotlessly clean and had everything we needed to make this a really comfortable stay. The cottage is located about a 15 min drive to Mariposa which is a lovely village with plenty of cafes and restaurants. About 25min drive away is Oakhurst which has great facilities including two large supermarkets. We would love to stay again if we find ourselves travelling this part of the world again.

This was a lovely rental for a group get together. We spent our days exploring Yosemite and our nights cooking big dinners and enjoying the space. It was a beautifully kept and inviting home for the weekend.
