About Kaylynn Garland

Scott and I met while attending College. We moved away for 4 years and then returned to raise our family in Shasta. Scott was from the city and I was local to the area. Scott was an avid rock climber and backpacker. I was into backpacking, running and loved my pottery.

Through the years our lives had some twist and turns but always staying true to our appreciation of nature and the fun of adventure.

I've spent the last year working on the house, from early mornings to late evenings, from rain to heavy winds to scorching hot days. We recently took a few days break which we spent in the Sierras. Our home is a labor of love you might say. We wanted to offer it as a vacation rental so guests could enjoy the beauty of the area and relax in our cute and cozy home.

Since our year long project on our family home is coming to a close we will be making time for the things we enjoy.

I will be going back to my pottery full-time. Scott and I will be making more time for hiking , biking, kayaking, running and traveling to visit our girls and family.

Kaylynn Garland purchased this cabin in 1985

Why Kaylynn Garland chose California

Our home was built in the 1930's. No matter where we traveled or lived we wanted to make Northern California our home. Shasta and the Whiskeytown area was an area will both fell in love with. We were lucky to be offered this home in 1985. We raised our children in this home, then the day came to move to a larger home, while never wanting to sell the home we decided to rent the home for the next 23 years. The last few year we have put our heart and soul into "The Little Red House" remodeling and keeping the rustic charm of the home.

At the end of August we had a "friends and family" open house and we were over whelmed by the response to our home from everyone who attended. Bottom line... everyone asked, why we were not downsizing and moving back into "The Little Red House"? Actually the thought has crossed our minds most everyday. However, we will be staying in our current home at this time. We are excited and look forward to having guests stay in the home.

What makes this cabin unique

We have easy access to Redding or even a day trip to the coast, Mt. Shasta, Shasta Caverns and Mt. Lassen. The best part of where The Little Red House is located is the short 2 mile drive to Whiskeytown Lake and fun for everyone. We enjoy being out of the city where we can see the stars at night.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We stayed over Christmas and we were impressed with the thoughtful decorations, including a Christmas tree for our children. The owner was very hospitable and the home was very clean and well equipped for our family crew of 6 and she gave great customer service. We enjoyed ourselves so much we extended our stay 2 additional nights (luckily it was available). There is a park pass in the house for the near by Whiskey Town Lake, which we used for local hiking. The space, comfort, and service exceeded what I would anticipate at this price point. We would certainly return and recommend highly.

Awesome place to visit!

There is an unlimited amount of things to do in and around Historic Old Shasta. If you are into the outdoors you will fall in love with the area. All four seasons are an opportunity to explore. Explore Whiskeytown National Recreation Area, so much to see and do. Hiking, Trail Runs, Mtn. Biking, swimming, snorkeling, diving, sailing, kayaking, canoeing, Paddle Boards, Gold Panning, Bird Watching and plant identification walks. Some animals you will see are the local deer, bear and squirrels. There are a lot of animals around the area that are less likely to be seen, the Mountain lions, bobcats, wild pigs, fisher and ring-tailed cats.

Adventure Mountain Biking at Whiskeytown National Recreation Area and nearby Swasey/BLM lands. Tons of single track trails, all degrees of difficulties, lots of up hills and awesome downhill runs.

The Sacramento River Trail and Rail Trail have many miles of paved routes. You can leave from the Town of Shasta, head to the Sundial Bridge then on up to Shasta Dam. You can even ride to the Mt. Shasta Mall on paved trails for a bite to eat.

Trail Head Parking for biking are located at Keswick Dam Rd. at Keswick Dam, Iron Mountain Rd. at Rock Creek Rd., Caldwell Park, Dieselhorst Bridge and Shasta Dam. Just remember that if you go downhill most likely there is uphill on the way back to the house.

Fishing is unlimited from the numerous lakes, ponds, creeks and streams. Whether you are fishing for Bass, Trout, Kokanee in the local waters or you are strictly a Catch and Release fisherman or fisherwoman you will enjoy the serenity of the area.

Hiking is an adventure for all ages, we raised our girls to love the mountains which has carried on to their adult life. Appreciation for the outdoors is something I hope all can experience. We have some family who like their electronics and city life which is great. It was not until they traveled to visit and I wanted to take them on a hike, to my surprise it was not that they did not want to go, they were a bit leary of the outdoors and what animals were "lurking". Guess what? They loved the adventure!

Whiskeytown Falls, Brandy Creek Falls and Boulder Creek Falls are all located within the park.

Make time for a self guided historic tour of the Shasta Courthouse Museum and don't forget to go downstairs to visit the jail.

Visit the Litsch Mercantile and step back in time.

Afternoons are a great time of day to capture your special photos at the brick ruins.

Venture into Redding where you will find the Sundial Bridge, Turtle Bay Exploration Park, Paul Bunyan's Forest Camp, Arboretum and the Arboretum Loop, Civic Auditorium, Viking Skate Country, Cascade Theatre, Cinemark Movie Theatre 8 & 14, rafting down the Sacramento River and enjoying some of our favorite restaurants.

Our favorite restaurants are Clearie's Restaurant and Lounge, New China, Tops Market Place, Jack's, Peter Chu's Skyroom at the Redding Airport, Chu's Too at the Pine Street School and Moonstone Bistro in the Placer Street Shopping Center and a hole in the wall restaurant to check out is Cafe Paradiso on Yuba Street. There are also many chain restaurants to choose from but these are our choices when we go out.

Redding is home to many churches and colleges, with ongoing events.

Our guest love the charm of the cabin! After a long day enjoy unwinding with family and friends. Cozy and warm in the home in the winter. Relaxing and cool in the summer. The covered deck and patio along with the large backyard is a great place to relax with a cold drink. The best part is our new outdoor shower, have fun experiencing showering under the stars, moon or by the light of the deck lights. Gold pans are available for your use - you will need to obtain a $1 permit at the visitor center. We hope you find your gold nugget! Five stars all around!

  • 5 of 5

This by far was the best VRBO house that we stayed in. Everything was perfect and the house is filled with quality stuff which is nothing short of a 5-star holiday resort.

Kaylynn, the owner, love the house and it shows in the care and effort she has put in to make this a great place to stay. The backyard is a perfect place to start and end your day. The mornings and evenings we spent in the backyard will be cherished for a long time.

We loved the place so much that we asked to extend our stay but couldn't.

Tip for future visitors- you need minimum 4 nights to enjoy all the beauty and activity this place has to offer.

Thanks Kaylynn for sharing the "little red house" with us. We will be back for sure.

Cozy & charming home in heart of Shasta❣️

  • 5 of 5

The Little Red House is the perfect place to get away from it all & yet so close to get in to it all. A quick 10 minute drive from shopping & dining in Redding, and only 5 minutes from outdoor sport paradise at Whiskytown Lake. The house offers everything you need to feel at home. Fantastic & spacious private yard. Lovely deck to sit out & enjoy any time of day. It has an outdoor shower which will be the highlight of your stay...I promise! Tons of bike trails around. Don't pass up hiking to Whiskytown Falls. It's worth the 45 minutes uphill & you will not feel guilty eating that In&Out burger. Owners are extremely hospitable ❤️

Had a great time at the house, loved the beds and the outdoor shower and the yard, didn't even leave the house the first day, but do much to see in the area. Owner was very informative and we explored the mountains and lakes and caves after we rested at the lovely house.
