Vistalinda Plantation featuring 17th/18th century buildings - the guest house and a rock barn of which has been completely remodeled. Rates for full house rental are extremely affordable and the staff goes out of it's way to be very flexible and accomodating.
The grounds have a 180 degree view of the town below, the ocean and the Island of Pico. The scenery both day and night is incredible as you overlook the town from a beautiful patio area. Sunsets can be fabulous.
The grounds feature a waterfall with a small water cave at the base, and, the grounds offer opportunity to learn about, local fruits and, vegetables, including Coffee, Banana, and Stevia growth. Depending on the visit time of year, local fresh fruit is generally available to try and, all year, generally one can twist the arm of the owner for a taste of their plantation coffee, as well as a personal collection of liquors local to the area.
Downtown Faja dos Vimes has a dock with water entry for swimming, an unusual large polished rock beach, but the most value of the area is it's proximity to 3 hiking trails, nearby famous Sao Jorge cheese factory, Silveira Park, and a restaurant (Ponto Encontro - self serve for lunch and menu dinners)and a few cafe's in the nearby town of Ribeira Seca (usually serving food for lunch). There are two markets in nearby Ribeira Seca. It is located 35 minutes by car from Faja Sao Joao, Topo, Faja dos Cubres thus, an excellent place from which to be picked up from or dropped off for the best island hikes. Serra do Topo is about 20 minutes.
Pickup and delivery to the airport with a stop at the market, can be arranged to enhance your vacationing experience. If you rent a car, parking will be .3 km from this house however, your host will transfer your luggage for you and you will gain a 4x4 drive experience in the process, very similar to what it would have been like in the 18th century by cow and wagon. It is a beautiful environmental reserve area with beautiful vegetation, flowers, banana and coffee trees along with orchards of citrus and other kinds of fruits.
Seeing the beauty of the island, is much better done by hiking. The top 2 hikes of the island are roughly 3.5 hours in duration each. We usually recommend 3-4 days stay on Sao Jorge because on a clear day there is a 3rd 6.5 hr spectacular hike along the ridge that descends in to the beautiful and picturesque town of Faja d'Ouvidor. On a clear day you an see Faial, Sao Jorge, Terceira, Graciosa and Pico along with gorgeous landscape. When you arrive in Faja d'Ouvidor there is no more spectacular place than Simon Dias natural pool to swim in (if you go to the dock you've gone to the wrong place - make sure you do not miss this incredible pool).
If you are a diver, there is a good reputable Dive Operator on the island that we have worked with a number of times.
If you are into canyoning / rappelling or guided touring yet another tour operator that we are currently working with.
There is also a good tour operator for Snorkeling, Fishing etc.
Whatever your dream vacation, let us help you find it on this beautiful island!
We purchased this property in 1996, and have added additional properties in front of it over time. It is / will be a life time project. We became licensed by the Department of Tourism 618/2015 in 2015. We are the first plantation tourism location in Faja dos Vimes.
Sheryl and Tony Alvernaz purchased this house in 1996
Historical: It was once owned by Prince Henry the navigator of Portugal
As you travel to the property you will be amazed at the pre 17th century wall construction
When you arrive at the property the view is simply spectacular and the property is adorned with all sorts of varieties of sub tropical plants.
"Kind and fair hosts that treat you like family, who have as much interaction with you as you desire and as little interaction as you desire. They are well informed about the island, and are very prepared to help you find the hidden beauties of the island"..... Quotes from guests. We have a lot of recommendations from former guests. We are new using Trip Advisors booking services so they appear in other locations.
Tony and sheryl were wonderfull hosts. They gave us many tips and showed us around. The transportation they offer is on this remote island a must ! Busses you have only once a day and the busstops are always on a big distance (height level) of the start/endings of the hikes. Hiring a car is difficult for hikers as well because you do not have circle hikes, so you always come to a point where you will be too far away from your car. It is not cheap but the transportation sheryl and tony offer is very interesting and worth the money because SAO JORGE is the MOST beautiful of the azores islands. 3 nights here is perfect to enjoy the silence, the atmosphere, the hikes. We stayed in the house where they have 2 rooms. Next to that, they rent an appartement. We loved the house , really felt like home there ! Thanks for caring so much for us. These people rent with passion for their island..

It is not advised to do car rentals on this island if you are hiking. You can see more faster by just asking your host for a rate plan for hiking drop off and pick ups. It is almost always less to do that than rent a car. Having said that, if you do choose to rent a car, you will be parking your vehicle .3 km away from the house and your host will pick you up in a 4 wheel drive vehicle to take you and your luggage to the propety. The road is supposed to be completed by April 2016 but in the meantime, we make you luggage issues simple!
* Approximate monthly price. Actual pricing will depend on the days of the month you stay.
The property sits at the cusp of 3 beautiful trails. The hosts have a lot of experience in getting around the island the least expensive ways and spend a great deal of time helping you to see the main sights to see on the island. They will even offer to help you with drop off and pick up from the airport stopping at a market along the way (if one arrives when the markets are open) as well as hiking, or outing drops or pick ups. Travel expense conscious, if asked the hosts will have great recommendations for you as to how you can travel/hike on the island and save money.
