The Reilly House is a strong part of the Irish History on PEI. This land was settled in the mid 1800's and this house was the second home built for the family. It sits on 14 acres and has easy beach access. Every effort has been made to keep the home as authentic as possible and with the exception of a bathroom and a deck everything is very much as it was intended to be.
The first thing about the Reilly House is it's location. It's truly a get away from it all kind of place. The meandering path to the beach, the private cove, a babbling brook, and stunning sunsets make this a place of peace and contentment. The beach is ideal for beach fires, gatherings and star gazing. You won't want to miss all the sky has to offer both day and night.
Charlottetown is a day trip. Two hours from Cape Wolfe and while the maps say its less the drive is so scenic you will need to plan for lots of breaks. But if local is your thing you can take a drive up to North Cape along the shore. This drive has been voted one of the 10 best drives in Canada. You can take in Skinner's Pond, Nail Pond, Sea Cow Pond, North Cape just to name a few of the most breath taking views. Local produce and fish is abundant. The fish truck comes into O'Leary a couple of days a week and roadside stands offer up fresh produce. (You must try the Irish Cobbler Potatoes). There is also a fishing cove near the house where you can buy fresh scallops and lobsters depending on the season. If your lucky enough to find a fisherman who bottles his own bar clams never pass them up!
The kitchen in the Reilly House is the gathering place and has an updated wood stove as well as an electric range. The kitchen is fully equipped and you are invited to use the spices and staples provided. Cooking local fair is a passion and meals are to be enjoyed. Couches are provided in the Kitchen because it seems the natural thing to do after dining.
There is a large deck off the porch and an outdoor bbq. There is also an out building that has a lobster cooker and all the fixings for a feed are provided. You can buy your fresh lobster right from the boat to your pot to enjoy (season permitting). Of course there are Oysters. If Oysters are your thing let us know when your booking and we will arrange a meeting with one of the local growers.
Mill River Golf course is nearby and it's a beautiful course. The area also has a lighthouse you can tour, a potato museum, and weekly Ceilidhs at St Mark's Hall down the road in Burton. There are lots of beaches for combing and sea glass to be collected. Tell us your interests when you book and we'll do our best to connect you. After all, we want you to love PEI as much as we do.
I live in Toronto but both my parents are from this area of Prince Edward Island. My mother was one of the Howards from Howard's Cove. As kids we summered every year in Cape Wolfe and not surprisingly we are related to almost the entire population in one way or another. My parents restored this house stick by stick and nurtured it for the next generation. It is now my turn to take care of it and hand it on to those who will come after me. Until retirement it is my desire to share and show off this amazing part of PEI.
Marcy Berg purchased this farmhouse in 1968
The Reilly House has been part of my family story since the first settlers landed from Ireland in the 1800's. The place and all around it is steeped in history and folklore. My attachment to the place and people runs deep. This is my favorite place in the world. The place I come to be with relatives, break bread and rejuvenate.
The privacy of the beach is first thing I'm certain you will come to love. That and the serenity. The Atlantic breezes blow through the house and the sound of the waves from bed are so relaxing. Long walks await you both on and off the beach.
We loved our two weeks at the Reilly House. A wonderfully peaceful setting in Western PEI. A meadow, flowers, the sound of the waves, melodious wind chimes, a beautiful beach to explore: what could be better! The house was also perfect: clean, comfortable, remarkably and thoughtfully equipped. The beds were oh so comfortable! We experienced many gorgeous sunsets and enjoyed several campfires on the beach.
We were also able to visit a good part of central and western PEI from our home base.
The nearest shopping is in O'Leary a 15 minute ride away. There are several friendly and good restaurants within a 10 to 30 minute drive. We took advantage of some of these, but really enjoyed cooking and eating at the Reilly House while watching day turn into evening.
We would definitely return!
Our family has rented Reilly house several times. Two adults three children, lots of room for everyone. The cottage has a great deck to enjoy while having a morning coffee or cooking dinner on the BBQ, a large yard for the kids to run around and play. There is a secluded beach to enjoy and a creek running into the ocean that keeps the kids entertained for hours, adults also. The beach is also great for a bonfire after dinner. The town on O'Leary is only 15 minutes away for a quick shop or Summerside is a great fishing town for an afternoon of shopping. There are many attractions nearby for a day trip. Our family love this location and the family that owns it. We cannot wait to be back on the deck watching the beautiful sunset.
I have stayed at Reilly House many times. I have to make sure I get there every year at least once. This year I had the privilege to have two stays. One in July and one in September. Both of those times had it's magical moments.
The part that is so special is how pristine the property and the Cottage is. It's kept with the utmost respect of it's heritage in mind and it hasn't taken that farmhouse charm totally away. It sits on a glorious cliff facing the North Humberland Strait, where you can see the sun melt into the water and create some of the most incredible sunsets and skies you'd ever see, while ships pass by way over on the horizon. Or early in the morning you can watch the fishing boats heading out at sunrise, for their catch of the day and watch them return to the harbour at the end of the day, just to the left of the Reilly House property. You can watch all this from a beautiful sunny deck, or from the rocking chair by the Elmira Woodstove or just walk literally minutes down to the most secluded beach, where you can see for miles and miles and meditate, do your private yoga moves or exercises, read, take a favourite beverage, have a snooze, swim, take long beach walks around the cliffs, collect the drift wood for the evenings bonfire, walk endlessly looking for sea glass, or special rocks or for me anything that has a resemblance of a heart or just watch the action of the ocean and the horizon.
You can plan your day around going to the wharf to buy some of the days catch for supper or order some of the best Oysters anywhere in the maritimes. You are only a few minutes by car away from a local market where you can get just what you need, along with fresh produce and fish.
There's this feeling of family when you stay at Reilly House as you know that the owners have family and close family friends keeping a very close watch on this special property, because they know too that this is a very special haven for every reason why you would want to get away from the complicated and relax with simplicity.
It's real and fresh and exciting, whether the weather is perfect or if it decides to acts up. Watching a thunder and lightning storm out on the horizon or the crazy skies, sunsets or sunrises are equally tremendous.
I will be be back again and again as long as I am able too. The drive is worth it. Make sure you travel during the daylight hours to get there, for the magical and beautiful drive.
A gorgeous 3 bedroom cottage on a large private lot , has access to its own red sand PEI beach .If your like me and Love seafood well PEI is world renowned for that and your local fisherman's warfe is a mere 4 kms away you can actually see it on your right from the beach ! Live lobsters if your there in lobster season .O'Leary is where your closest shopping is a mere 15 minutes drive will get you there . I can't even begin to describe the sunsets from that deck , nothing beats having a fresh lobster dinner with some white wine while watching the sunset and listening to the chime! You have everything you need washing machine , phone and even wifi ! Never had time for TV but it's there .Fishing charters are not too far away at Alberton if you like deep sea fishing . My favorite was taking in the fresh sea air and taking pictures of the stunning sunsets . While your there remember to visit the potatoe museum in O'Leary and try their PEI French fries .And what better dessert than Their award winning PEI ice cream served at the Dairy ice cream parlors through the area . PEI is very proud of its dairy products wither it be cheese , cream or ice cream and you will see why , it's how it used to be made elsewhere 40 years ago.I really enjoyed my stay at this cottage ( can you tell ? Lol) and you would have to experience it for yourself .
I had the pleasure of spending 10 days in August 2015 at the Reilly House in PEI. What a great experience. The house was fully stocked with everything one might need for time away from home. There are 3 bedrooms and 1 bath all are on the second floor. My daughter loved the Anne of Green Gables room. It has the best view and you get to wake up and hear and see the beach and the fishing boats if you go in Lobster season. When we arrived lobster season had started 2 days before so we got to have freshly caught lobster straight off the boat more than once.
The house has waterfront access, in fact, it has its own private beach. We spent hours on the beach and it was a great spot to have a bonfire in the evening and watch the stars. Another favorite part of the house was the deck. On the deck, there is a perfect spot for your morning tea or coffee. The deck is also where my daughter sorted shells and sea glass.
The house was a perfect haven and we can not wait to go again! We love the quiet and simplicity that comes from staying here.
We were able to stock up on things like groceries in town and we also visited a local potato farm, a lighthouse, found the best ice cream in the province and even made a day trip to Charlottetown which is 2 hrs away.
Really if you want a beautiful place to stay I highly recommend Reilly House.
Our family stayed at the Reilly house for a week in August. The house was in immaculate condition when we arrived. After a full day of driving, we had a wonderful night's sleep in the comfortable beds.
We really enjoyed the beach, coffee on the deck each morning and the scenic coastal drives. Marcy was a wonderful host and was easy to get a hold of during our stay. We will stay there again!
The nearest town is O'Leary and they have a grocery store, liquor store and drugstore. The nearest resort is Mill River and it offers fine dining and golf.
