This property was perfect for a quiet girls' weekend. Everything was provided, and you felt at home. We enjoyed hiking in the PA Grand Canyon and relaxing by the camp fire. We all enjoyed our time at the cabin. I would definitely rent from them again.
Good intentions gone awry.
THE GOOD: The owners care. There are little extras all around from toiletries and kitchen items to plenty of towels & clean soft sheets. The cabin is located in a GORGEOUS setting. The yard is well maintained. The owners were easy to reach & helped us receive a delivery.
THE BAD: If you have small children, asthma, dislike clutter & dust, or are averse to year round Christmas decorations, this is not the house for you. It is FILLED with stuff: every corner, every wall, every bed & seating area, pretty much every flat surface has SOMETHING on it. Even the bathrooms. Seriously. There are tons of fake plants, garlands & stuffed animals amongst 6 CHRISTMAS TREES. While the bathrooms, floors & kitchen was clean, all the clutter wasn’t- so there was lots of dust & cobwebs. My wife had an asthma attack after moving some decorative pillows out of the way. (She hasn’t had an attack in 4 yrs) There's nowhere for toddlers/kids to be safely because there are decorative hazards everywhere, including the halls. There are no closets for clothes & little room for items you might bring into the kitchen (like food) because it too is FILLED with decorations. The shelves/counters were so cluttered we couldn’t cook in the kitchen until we moved it all out. Several of the main windows are blocked with garlands & quilts so you can’t see the beautiful views of actual nature outside. This contributes to the cabin being really dark inside. A reviewer below complained that the house felt small; we concur. It's a large space but filled with so much stuff it feels cramped & unusable.
Sorry if this sounds harsh but I’m being as fair and honest as possible. The owners are obviously quite proud of their decorations, but it is way too much of a good thing. The photos in the listing don’t show all the clutter that is actually there (example, photo 5 doesn't show the giant fake Christmas tree in the living room, the bay window in photo 8 is completely obscured with decorations etc)
For this to be a usable rental we suggest 50% of the decorations & 30% of the furniture (especially stuff blocking the windows & hallways) should be removed. This would allow the cleaners to keep on top of the dust and cobwebs better. We’d also clear out the lower shelves in the kitchen & the entire bar area for guest use & eliminate the table in the middle of the kitchen that everyone bumps into. If these changes were made & new photos taken, this could be a great rental for years to come.
Everything was perfect for a family gathering.
The total recycling of everything was a hassle otherwise a perfect place.
Cabin is nice. We did have a good time. Very over decorated for me pine trees, pine garland and decoration in every room, no room for luggage. Not as large as listed, only 3 bedrooms and loft , 2 baths and only 1 shower, 1 tub , air conditioner for 1 bedroom only. . Just not as much room as we thought.
Disappointing to have a guest write a review SO FULL of untruths, and misrepresent this retreat that so many others love...
Thankfully the continuous compliments we receive from our guests is all the feedback we need. This isolated, negative comment from a grumpy guest about their personal "preference" of decor isn't going to change one thing about what we do here.
Room for luggage?
Well, lets see.... in the largest double family suite, (which is 500 square feet alone) there are THREE beds which have an EMPTY bench at the foot of EACH of them that could easily be used for luggage. 🤦♀️
Then, in that same suite there is ALSO a full size sofa that could be used for luggage... In addition to the 3 available benches, and full size sofa, there is also a huge 4×4 rattan ottoman that could easily be used for a suitcase as well.....
The spacious loft bedroom- which is 375 sq. ft (& also has a sitting area) has a red wooden bench situated across the end of the queen size sleigh bed. In addition to the long, wooden bench there is ALSO another full size sofa, & another vintage fainting sofa which could easily have been used for luggage as well. (This tells you just how large the loft is)
The 4th bedroom (ensuite to the downstairs bathroom) definitely has space for luggage as well, and although the 5th bedroom is small, it has 2 nice clothing racks, as well as a tall dresser where guests can unpack & settle in nicely. There is also large laundry room that could easily hold 10 suitcases. (we've seen more)
Size: The cabin is over 2600 sq ft, and does INDEED have 5 bedrooms (I mean, just look at the photos) 🤦 One IS a double suite, which is fully described in our listing.
Bathrooms: Yes, just AS DESCRIBED-There are TWO FULL bathrooms.
One with stand up shower, & one with a wonderful vintage soaking tub that everyone LOVES!
The weekend these guests came was early June here in the north, & we had been having unusually cool weather with almost daily rain... Evenings were literally 45-48 degrees. AT CHECK-IN, we asked the guests face to face, if they would like the air conditioners put in, (we have several units, both for windows & whole room units) but the guests declined.
Yes, THEY DECLINED.
We told them we lived just 3 miles away, & if they changed their mind we would be there in a HEARTBEAT to accommodate ANYTHING they needed.
Sadly, they instead chose to decline our offers, and instead later complain & misrepresent the cabin.
We love this cabin. The location is perfect to go to Pine Creek Gorge, Corning NY, Wellsboro and Mansfield. Beautiful acreage and the cabin itself has every amenity you could want. The hot tub is an added bonus!! Our hosts made sure we had everything we could possibly need. They really are lovely people. My husband and I will be regular guests. 5 star recommendation!!
Glamping With All the Comforts of Home!
We very much enjoyed our stay in this charmingly decorated cabin. The peaceful front porch was a serene pleasure both day and night, and we took advantage of the fire pit to enjoy a satisfying blaze one night. With my husband and son loving to cook together, we shared several excellent meals in the well stocked kitchen. The cabin is well designed for both private spaces and great group gatherings, depending on whether you're feeling sociable or wanting a bit of solitude.
As we happily discovered, nearby Mansfield also has a topnotch brewpub, Yorkholo.
We stayed here while exploring Corning and Elmira, New York, drawn by the Tiffany Mosaic Exhibit at the Corning Museum of Glass. The drive between the cabin and Corning/Elmira was gorgeous and the roads were easy to navigate, especially with GPS. The Corning Museum of Glass was surprisingly fascinating and very well done.
There were a few minor irritations that kept us from giving this a 5 star rating. Only a couple of the windows had screens on them, so we could not really open the house up fully to take advantage of the cool fall air. Cooking as much as we did, the need to separate the trash in specific and somewhat complicated ways was confusing, leaving us wondering what to do with items that weren't obviously burnable, compostable, or recyclable. Lastly, a few medium weight blankets available would have been beneficial: the heavy comforters were perfect for cold winter nights, but too much for this time of year, while the sheets weren't quite enough. To be fair, I did not contact the Smiths about this last issue as we didn't think about it until we were heading to bed each night, at which point it wasn't enough of an issue to bother them about so late.
Overall, we had a relaxing and enjoyable family getaway staying at this cabin and I would definitely recommend it to others.
