Bedrooms 6
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

6 Bedrooms, 4 Masters, 360 Views, Close to Everything in Duck

Note to Travelers! VRBO has changed our ability to edit rates, and I am having a hard time with the new editor. Therefore I cannot honor any VRBO rates without reviewing the quote they generate first. Please contact me for accurate pricing.

*** NOT AVAILABLE 6/1 TO 10/1 *** This property rents through Outer Banks Blue ONLY during the Summer season, "High Season" rates are $3425 to $4350 a week, property #bb001, the "Tarvalier". I do not rent summer dates on VRBO.

I've just listed it on VRBO to rent open "offseason" dates. I do not rent to groups under 25 years old, sorry! Please ask for quote as that's just the base rate... I charge more for large groups. I designed and built the home, and am a local owner, so let me know if you have any questions. We also have another vacation rental, vrbo #719651, the "SeaWitch", a remodeled 1960's beach road cottage.

tl:dr - Pool only open for May and October dates, not heated. Dogs are fine, decks open to fenced yard. No leash law on beach, but dogs must be under control. Centrally located in Duck, short walk to everything in town. 4 masters, 3 are almost identical layout. Please contact me for quote before requesting booking!!!

Walk to dinner, stores, the jazz festival, and everything else Duck has to offer. I built the Tarvalier on top of the dune at the north end of town, and designed it to take advantage of the 360 degree views from the 4th story deck and tower room. The boardwalk that runs the length of the town ends right across the street from Cook Drive, making this the most convenient location you can find that still has great views.

While the walk to the beach takes less than five minutes, i also provide a stretched six person golf cart to make trips even easier. I have a friend that lets people staying at the house park right in his driveway next to the access.

Another goal of the house design is to give everyone their own space, no matter how large the group. With a tower room, a mid level tv room with 60" lcd and surround sound, 4th level deck, 3rd level screen porch, ground level game room with 70" tv and surround sound , pool table and bar, not to mention the 4 masters, three with doors to decks, you won't feel crowded no matter how many people you bring.

I put the hot tub on the 3rd level deck to enjoy the views and make star gazing easy, and keep it near the great room so parents can easily keep an eye on kids using it.

The Tarvalier is very dog friendly, designed with the porch to fenced yard access inside the gate, so even if you let your fur babies out on the third or second floor decks, they have access to the yard, and Duck's beaches are the only ones around that let you have well behaved dogs off leash year round 24hrs a day.

The kitchen is extremely well equipped for large groups, with double sinks, double dishwashers, double refrigerators, and an over-sized stove with a full oven and auxiliary oven. Two coffeemakers, plenty of dishes, utensils, and everything else i could think of to accommodate groups such the yoga retreats that come each fall.

Come enjoy the off season in Duck! No crowds, walk to everything, and plenty of entertainment at the house should the weather turn bad - all three common area tvs are hooked up to hi definition "Dish" network with a whole house dvr system. Two of the tvs are perfect for movies with surround sound systems, or watch the big game while playing pool and hanging out at the bar. There's nothing like relaxing in the tower during stormy weather with a glass of wine and a book for those who like a slower pace.

Please feel free to ask me anything, and i hope you'll come enjoy everything i've done to make the Tarvalier a one of a kind getaway.

About John VanderMyde

I'm a local property investor with 6 rentals, three of which are weekly vacation homes. This home is called the Tarvalier, since I went to UVA and my wife to UNC, and my other vacation rentals is the SeaWitch, also on VRBO, and Otter Creek, a soundfront 4 bedroom on Colington Island.

John VanderMyde purchased this house in 2002

Why John VanderMyde chose Duck

After showing over 1000 rental homes during my real estate sales career, I had a few thoughts on how to build one better. I earned my General Contractors license, designed the home, and got to work. Most people seem to like it a lot.

What makes this house unique

4th story tower room is unique, and only exists on this home and other's i've designed (six others on the obx) with over 3600 square feet of living area, six bedrooms with four masters, it holds a lot of people. I've also put in two fridges in the kitchen, two dishwashers, two sinks, and an over-sized range with two ovens.

Just Ducky!

Charming, well laid-out home for your family and about two plus other families! Nicely decorated and equipped. Hot tub on the master bed level, great yard for fur babies, fun, separate floor for the kids and much more! Perfectly located within walking distance to town and the beach. My favorite part was enjoying the freshly ground coffee in the tower at sunrise! Fantastic stay and the host was very attentive and helpful. We'll be back!

Highly Recommend

Our family rented this home for a week for Spring Break. We enjoyed every second here. The short walk to the ocean was perfect for our kids ages 5-12. (The golf cart was a nice bonus as well!) The home was clean, and had almost everything we needed. One of my favorite parts about this home is how every bedroom has it's own bathroom, so you have some privacy with a large group. We enjoyed the hot tub, but the pool was not open yet (we stayed early April). Close to shopping, fishing/crabbing, and the ocean, this was an ideal location for getting outside and being able to go do something without having to drive a long distance. We took advantage of a Wild Horse Adventure tour, as well as a charter fishing trip while we were in town. Duck Donuts was also a big hit! We did have a couple of issues with the house that were fixed IMMEDIATELY. John's communication with us was impressive. He answered texts immediately, and had repair people out on the weekend. My whole family commented on how perfect this house was for a group. There were areas to gather, and places to find solitude. If we ever find ourselves back in the OBX, we'll be staying here again!

We had the best time! The house was amazing and we walked to the beach each day. Our dog Raymond ran on the beach and it was fun to watch him. We could also walk to the town of Duck and enjoy the boardwalk and local shops and restaurants. We would definitely stay here again and give the whole experience a big thumbs up.

Excellent Stay

  • 5 of 5

My family and I stayed here for a weekend in March 2018 and loved it. Not only is the kitchen fantastic with two fridges, sinks, and dishwashers, but it is well stock with all the pots, pans, and dishes you need. We loved that the bedrooms all had their own bathrooms (with the exception of the bottom floor "kids" rooms, but the bathroom was just outside the bedrooms), and that there was essentially one living room on each floor, which allowed everyone to be able to find their own space. Having use of the golf cart made the trip to the beach more manageable. The living room/kitchen area is so bright and sunny and is extremely well suited for hanging out because it has a lot of seating for everyone. The crows nest is awesome, it has the best views of the ocean, and gave me a quiet place to take a little nap on Saturday. Beautiful sunrise and sunset views from the house and top decks. We enjoyed the hot tub tremendously, it was very clean and a neat experience to sit out there and see the stars - the street is pretty dark so if it's not cloudy you can see an amazing night sky. We even saw shooting stars. The entire house was very clean and well maintained, and it was great not having to pack a lot of the daily house essentials like bathroom soap, paper towels, trash bags, and toilet paper. We brought our dogs it was so great being able to let them run and play in the fenced in yard, that is a huge asset to pet owners like ourselves who want to bring their dogs on vacation. The Town of Duck also allows well behaved dogs off-leash on the beach which is fun. Overall, we had a wonderful weekend and would love to book again, especially when the pool is open. Thanks, John!

Owner's Response: Reading reviews like this reminds me why I rent my homes myself! It's so rewarding to know the home I designed and built works as intended. I'm like a proud papa. Thank you so much for staying at the Tarvalier, nothing makes me happier than when my guests enjoy themselves! -John

Nice Home, Great Amenities

  • 5 of 5

Great Location within Duck. You can walk to the village sound-side or stroll to the ocean in no time. Well stocked home that has anything you could want in the off season. The use of the golf cart to drive down the street to the beach was a great perk. The fenced yard was awesome to let our dog out in when it was freezing so we didn't have to stand there with him the whole time. The owner was very responsive to any questions that we had the whole time we were there.

Perfect for group of adults and kids, close to beach and boardwalk

  • 4 of 5

We had a great stay at the house catching up with friends. We were six adults three kids and a dog and everyone had a great time. Very dog friendly, fenced in yard. The house was spacious, 4 masters all with their own bathroom was fantastic for privacy amongst the group. The only gripes/warnings would be:

1) be ready to climb some stairs. The kitchen and main living area is on the top floor so making multiple trips to unload gets tiring.

2) some of the appliances are a bit aged and have broken parts. Everything functions OK but in need of a little TLC.

Aside from that everything was great! Wish we could have used the pool but we were there off season. Great location and John was always available to answer questions and offer insight on getting around the area. Would definitely stay again!
