Overview

About the property

6 Bedrooms, 4 Masters, 360 Views, Close to Everything in Duck

*** NOT AVAILABLE 6/1 TO 10/1 *** This property rents through Outer Banks Blue ONLY during the Summer season, "High Season" rates are $3425 to $4350 a week, property #bb001, the "Tarvalier". I do not rent summer dates on VRBO.

I've just listed it on VRBO to rent open "offseason" dates. I do not rent to groups under 25 years old, sorry! Please ask for quote as that's just the base rate... I charge more for large groups. I designed and built the home, and am a local owner, so let me know if you have any questions. We also have another vacation rental, vrbo #719651, the "SeaWitch", a remodeled 1960's beach road cottage.

Walk to dinner, stores, the jazz festival, and everything else Duck has to offer. I built the Tarvalier on top of the dune at the north end of town, and designed it to take advantage of the 360 degree views from the 4th story deck and tower room. The boardwalk that runs the length of the town ends right across the street from Cook Drive, making this the most convenient location you can find that still has great views.

While the walk to the beach takes less than five minutes, i also provide a stretched six person golf cart to make trips even easier. I have a friend that lets people staying at the house park right in his driveway next to the access.

Another goal of the house design is to give everyone their own space, no matter how large the group. With a tower room, a mid level tv room with 60" lcd and surround sound, 4th level deck, 3rd level screen porch, ground level game room with 70" tv and surround sound , pool table and bar, not to mention the 4 masters, three with doors to decks, you won't feel crowded no matter how many people you bring.

I put the hot tub on the 3rd level deck to enjoy the views and make star gazing easy, and keep it near the great room so parents can easily keep an eye on kids using it.

The Tarvalier is very dog friendly, designed with the porch to fenced yard access inside the gate, so even if you let your fur babies out on the third or second floor decks, they have access to the yard, and Duck's beaches are the only ones around that let you have well behaved dogs off leash year round 24hrs a day.

The kitchen is extremely well equipped for large groups, with double sinks, double dishwashers, double refrigerators, and an over-sized stove with a full oven and auxiliary oven. Two coffeemakers, plenty of dishes, utensils, and everything else i could think of to accommodate groups such the yoga retreats that come each fall.

Come enjoy the off season in Duck! No crowds, walk to everything, and plenty of entertainment at the house should the weather turn bad - all three common area tvs are hooked up to hi definition "Dish" network with a whole house dvr system. Two of the tvs are perfect for movies with surround sound systems, or watch the big game while playing pool and hanging out at the bar. There's nothing like relaxing in the tower during stormy weather with a glass of wine and a book for those who like a slower pace.

Please feel free to ask me anything, and i hope you'll come enjoy everything i've done to make the Tarvalier a one of a kind getaway.

About John VanderMyde

I'm a local property investor with 5 rentals, two of which are weekly vacation homes. This home is called the Tarvalier, since I went to UVA and my wife to UNC, and my other vaction rental is the SeaWitch, also on VRBO.

John VanderMyde purchased this house in 2002

Why John VanderMyde chose Outer Banks

After showing over 1000 rental homes during my real estate sales career, I had a few thoughts on how to build one better. I earned my General Contractors license, designed the home, and got to work. Most people seem to like it a lot.

What makes this house unique

4th story tower room is unique, and only exists on this home and other's i've designed (six others on the obx) with over 3600 square feet of living area, six bedrooms with four masters, it holds a lot of people. I've also put in two fridges in the kitchen, two dishwashers, two sinks, and an over-sized range with two ovens.

Awesome time, met all our needs! Highly Recomend!!

What a wonderful home. Close to everything. Loved the kitchen, did a lot of cooking and had huge space to work in. All appliances worked well. Couldn't get enough of the Hot Tub. The only drawback might be the three flights of stairs, was good exercise though.

Good Stay!

  • 4 of 5

The house is in the perfect location in duck! Within walking distance to the northern end of the boardwalk, shops etc. The house is massive with a very nice layout. 2nd level den was a perfect spot to tuck away and watch something the rest of the crowd didnt want to watch. We had a few cloudy/rainy days, but I got one really spectacular sunrise in the tower room. A must do if you stay here. Perfect for a cozy reading nook or just to hang out. My son though it was silly to stand on the top of that and throw paper airplanes down to see if they would fly. Fun for everyone :) The golf cart is very convenient to get to the beach and was such a treat to have. I gave this house a 4 star vs a 5 star because its in need of a little TLC. The owner is aware, and I believe has scheduled a week of maintenance to address the issues. The owner John is amazingly responsive and even offered to come by to help us figure out how to work the fireplace while dealing with a personal issue. Truly impressive. All in all we would stay here again.

Owner's Response: Yes, looking forward to giving it some TLC this week! We've had a long run of rentals this year. Thanks for being understanding - I feel like I need to apologize to everyone in advance, but I don't want to bring people down who are enjoying a vacation. FWIW - went from taking my Mom to the emergency room for complications from brain cancer to putting her in Hospice at her house over the last two weeks. Living at her house now until the end. I hope to get my act back together soon. -John

Great house, great location, can't go wrong!

  • 5 of 5

We just got back from a long weekend stay at Tarvalier. My husband and I absolutely loved this house. The owner was great, accessible, accommodating and very helpful. The house is a large house but my husband and I booked it anyway because I was smitten with the fourth floor tower room (which I liked to call the lighthouse room). Since it was off season and a bit cooler, it was great to start off the day sipping our coffee and taking in the 360 degree views of Duck, the sound and ocean. We even watched a sunrise one morning! Anyone would love this room. The kitchen, dinning and sitting area on the third level is very open and inviting with a porch off to the side as well. The bedrooms on the second and third levels were very comfortable and private, all with their own bathrooms. Three of them have doors and access to their own porches. There are numerous outside porches on all levels and we enjoyed star gazing one night on the upper roof top deck. If you are a TV fan this would be your house. There are large screen TVs on each level with very comfy couches to sit on. My husband loves pool and enjoyed using the pool table on the lower level. Of course we did not have children with us but if I was a little person I would have loved the children's bedrooms on the first level. Adorable with bunk beds to boot!!!!

The other reason we chose this house was its close proximity to Duck. This was our first time visiting the area and we love to walk. It took us maybe all of 5 minutes to walk down the hill to the northern end of the boardwalk. If you left the house and headed in the opposite direction the walk to the ocean took maybe 10 minutes at most. We were told we could drive or use the golf cart but it was so close we preferred walking. It we return to Duck, which we hope to do, we would definitely stay in this house again.

Fun Time in Duck

Travalier was spacious, close proximity to shopping and restaurants, and great views of both the sound and ocean! The owner was easy to contact and answered questions promptly.

Best house we have EVER stayed in!

  • 5 of 5

My family has rented many houses in the Outer Banks over the years, and this was by far the best house we ever stayed in! There is so much room to all spread out in and so many areas to hang out. We had 6 adults, 3 kids, and 2 dogs and everyone loved it! The kids loved playing hide and seek, swimming in the pool, and doing puzzles in the crows nest. It was windy one night and so we even all told ghost stories and pirate tales in the crows nest! The adults loved having the screened in porch and hot tub to relax in. The dogs loved all the decks and the yard to play in. This was also the first place where I didn't have to pick out a million sand spurs out of my schnauzer's beard after every time we took her outside! Every couple was able to get a king size room with their own bath so for the first time no couple had to compromise! The kitchen was fantastic and accommodated being able to feed everyone. Some of our group even got stuck there because of flooding after Hurricane Matthew. John was fantastic and was so nice to my family and accommodated them to be able to stay an extra night! We are definitely planning on staying in this house again! I loved everything about this house!
