A lovely neighborhood in the hectic city center.
As an oasis of tranquility, next to a park, which we consider as "our garden",
Everything is nearby to enjoy, but also "just around the corner" so: no bother.
Shops, market, restaurants, park, museums, canals and the river Amstel, all in reach by foot or by the typical dutch way: on a pushbike.
The studio is a separate part of the home we live in, yet you'll have all the privacy you could wish for and you can come and go at any time (but mind your neighbours).
Our family of five, is living in the same building as where we have this studio. We are from halfway 1960's the kids are from the beginning of this century.
Sven purchased this studio in 1997
The building is build in 1888 and as old as the world famous Royal Concert House, in a time when Amsterdam was fast expanding. It is close, really close, to the small but charming Sarphatipark, where one can workout, walk or have a picknick in the sun. Whilst the location is amidst of everything, the street is fairly quiet. Yet around the corner you'll find the shops you want and a little further on walking distance you'll find everything Amsterdam is known for at its best.
Amsterdam was the last stop on our most recent trip. We like to stay in a neighborhood area when traveling so as to make sure we get a sense of day-to-day life in an area. This property was perfect for that, and I highly recommend it for a couple looking as nice base from which to explore the city.
The property is conveniently located about a block from the #4 tram line which makes for a convenient transport from the airport to the Central Station, and then on the tram line out. It is in a very typical Amsterdam neighborhood, and is steps from Sarphatpark. The neighborhood hosts a number of restaurants as well as shopping. The location is also convenient to the many major attractions in Amsterdam, most being within about a 30 minute walk from the property. If you are staying in Amsterdam, walk. While there is abundant public transportation, the city is so lovely and walkable, you miss much of the beauty and understanding by not walking.
The property itself was very attractive. You are staying on the second floor of a family home, in a room with its own entrance and private bath and a small kitchenette. The room is decorated very nicely, and it is a very comfortable place to stay. We bought breakfast foods at a local supermarket and found the room a pleasant place to have our breakfast as we got ourself ready for the day. Off of the room is a nice balcony with a bistro table, which in nice weather would be an excellent place to have breakfast, or to sit out in the early evening with a glass of wine. This is a simple room that we found wonderfully meet our needs. Please note that you are stay in a Dutch house. This means that the staircase is very steep. This may make the property a difficult stay for someone with a disability. For us, however, it was great.
The owners of the property, Sven and Claire, are fantastic hosts. They warmly welcomed us, but then were unobtrusive. They have stocked the room with a variety of small items such as wine, etc. These are available for guests and they ask that you pay as you use them. The prices are very reasonable, basically at cost. You may want to check what they have stocked before shopping for them elsewhere. The family has three teenage children. This was not an issue. The house on the floor of the room was quiet and comfortable. The couple of time we ran into the children, leaving or coming from the house, they were extremely polite.
This was a wonderful place to stay.
The place is clean, warm and perfectly located to get everywhere touristy but still hang out in the local restaurants and bars. There are several areas very near by (2 minute) walk with fantastic drinks, shopping and dinning opportunities. The studio itself is vintage and awesome, very comfortable and has everything you need for a great stay. We were greeted with fresh flowers and stroopwaffels (my new favorite treat)- thank you! Svens wife helped us to maximize our plans for visiting the busy museum and still getting to explore by foot. We spent a whole day exploring by bike, there are several rental places very near by. Overall, it was a wonderful stay. We will certainly visit again and I will be sure to stay again with Sven! Thank you!
