The stone marking the geographical center of ireland is a few yards from our front door, making this vacation rental close to Athlone the perfect touring base from which to explore the length and breadth of Ireland. This welcoming, immaculate family country home is just 10 mins north of Athlone on the n61. Dublin, Galway and Limerick are 45 minutes - 1hr 15 mins away. The full size snooker table is located in its own specially-designed building just behind the house. The house sits on 1 1/4 acres and is gated, so there is a lot of room for children to play in safety. (It's a very quiet, safe and friendly area with very little traffic.)
This is a high quality family home that the family still uses, so expect the kind of quality you would expect in your own home. It was built by my hard-working parents - a real labor of love - and now we'd like to share it with you. There is a lovely new log fire in the living room, and the new double doors at the front make the house even more cozy than before.
We are down a country lane just off the n61 which is the Athlone-Roscommon road. We are a few minutes' drive from beautiful St John's Wood, the National Looped Walk and Rin Duin castle.
Staying here, you have all the benefits of easy access to Athlone without any of the restrictions (noise, difficulty and cost of parking, etc).
High speed internet is coming to the area (promised for March 2016) In the meantime, the nearby hotel (the Hodson Bay hotel) offers free wifi to anyone having a coffee there.
An extra charge of $10 per guest per night is due on top of the nightly rate for parties of more than two people.
Smoking is not allowed anywhere in the house, but is permitted in the outside areas. This wonderful holiday home is perfect for couple, families and groups. None of the bedrooms share a wall with any other, and even the sofa bed (located in the Dining Room) is incredibly private.
I'm a Celtic mutt - half-Irish, half-Scottish and raised in London. Since 1999 I've been splitting my time between San Francisco and London/Athlone. I'm a leadership coach and a soon-to-be author. I believe in counting your blessings and sharing them whenever the occasion arises, which is why Hazel Hollows is on VRBO. I have 33 first cousins. Like my Irish grandmother, I'm left-handed. I'm often mistaken for an extrovert.
Owner/ Manager purchased this house in 1998
As already mentioned, this is a real family home that was built over a number of years by my parents, so it's not the usual vacation rental. Expect to find the kind of quality you would expect in your own home, along with the kind of cleanliness for which Irish homes are renowned! Our circumstances have changed and we're not able to stay there full time at the moment so it's our pleasure to share it with you.
It's great to visit Athlone - or even to attend events at the nearby Hodson Bay hotel. But if you like space, tranquility and beauty, Hazel Hollows is for you. The walk down the country lane is gorgeous any time of year. Athlone is a short 8-minute drive from this Irish vacation home.
The snooker room is really a 'snooker house'. The ultimate man cave, it sports a full-size snooker table complete with overhead lighting. My brothers and the local kids spent a lot of time in that room when they were young and it's fun to have something that will get everyone away from the TV.
The kitchen is huge. Like most Irish homes, it's where people naturally tend to hang out. The utility room containing a second fridge plus washer and dryer is located between the kitchen and the back door leading to the snooker room.
We recently fitted a log burner that gets everything toasty in minutes. (Of course we have central heating too.) We think you'll like it.
The trees after which the house is named are located at the back of the house Hazelnuts anyone? In the summer, you can pick blackberries by the cartload just outside the gates.
The house manager, Margaret, lives close by. She is super friendly, helpful and resourceful. Margaret will have the gates open and be ready to greet you when you arrive. Just call her when you know your arrival time. (Her contact info is in the House Manual which will be emailed to you once your booking is confirmed.)
Each of the bedrooms is extremely private. The large living room is across the hall from the spacious dining room and kitchen. However, the dining room and kitchen both have doors connecting them, as well as doors to the hallway. Think 'Ireland meets America' and that's the design!
This property is very comfortable and met our every need. Close to Athlone and wonderful attractions. The owner was extremely helpful and responded to all of our questions and concerns in a very timely manner. Great location. Great property.
We enjoyed our stay in this lovely three bedroom home near Athlone. The home is gorgeous inside and beautifully furnished. It's a short drive to Athlone, and really reasonably close to Dublin. The only reason we couldn't go with five stars is that the outdoors needs work, and the patio is pretty much unusable. But the home itself is lovely, and the people of Athalone very welcoming!
Biggest negatives were no access to Internet. I own a small business and was having difficulty communicating. This was shown to be included when property was booked and didn't find out till shortly before we left that it was not there. Also noted that air conditioning was available in the amenities and it was not. Couldn't open the windows at night due to no screens and I was very warm. Guessing this also is a European thing as it was this way everywhere. Beds very hard as well but was also told that is European thing from others and turned out to be true. Every place we stayed was rock hard. Overall all though was very nice and charming. Caretaker Margaret was great as well.
We stayed at Hazel Hollows during a two week trip to Ireland. The home was absolutely perfect, there were five of us. Margaret the house manager was extremely accommodating and helpful. The home had everything we needed. I would definitely rent it again. We enjoyed the Snooker room and the quiet location. The bedrooms were big, the bathrooms were large and kitchen was very well equipped. This is a lovely in a very central location. You are close to Dublin, Galway and Dun Laoghaire. Athlone Castle was lovely and very interesting. The Hodson Bay Hotel was minutes away and there is a nice golf course minutes away as well. This is a great place for a family vacation.
The ruins of medieval Rindoon (Rin Duin) Castle is a 40 minute walk along our country lane. The National Looped Walk also takes you to St John's Wood, which is an area of historical interest.
