Overview

About the property

3 bed, 3 bath high quality home set in 1 1/4 acres. Gated. Snooker room!

The stone marking the geographical center of ireland is a few yards from our front door, making this vacation rental close to Athlone the perfect touring base from which to explore the length and breadth of Ireland. This welcoming, immaculate family country home is just 8 minutes north of Athlone on the N61. Dublin, Galway and Limerick are 45 minutes to 1hr 15 mins away. The full size snooker table is located in its own specially-designed building just behind the house. The house sits on 1 1/4 acres and is gated, so there is a lot of room for children to play in safety. (It's a very quiet, safe and friendly area with very little traffic.)

This is a high quality family home that the family still uses, so expect the kind of quality you would expect in your own home. It was built by my hard-working parents - a real labor of love - and now we'd like to share it with you. There is a lovely new log fire in the living room, and the new double doors at the front make the house even more cozy than before.

We are down a country lane just off the N61 (the Athlone-Roscommon road). We are a few minutes' drive from beautiful St John's Wood, the National Looped Walk and Rin Duin castle. Lough Ree is a short walk away. A water sports center is nearby:

Staying here, you have all the benefits of easy access to Athlone without any of the restrictions (noise, difficulty and cost of parking, etc).

In May 2018 high speed broadband finally made its way to our village, so now the house offers super high speed wifi as well a premium TV channel package.

An extra charge of $40 per guest per night is due on top of the nightly rate for parties of more than two people. We work hard to keep the house to a high standard.

Smoking is not allowed anywhere in the house, but is permitted in the outside areas. This wonderful holiday home is perfect for couple, families and groups. None of the bedrooms share a wall with any other, and even the sofa bed (located in the Dining Room) is incredibly private.

Please note that only registered guests are allowed on the property, and parties of any kind are not allowed. (We have had a couple of bad experiences in this regard, which have resulted in this decision.) Please provide names of all registered guests at time of booking.

About Owner/ Manager

I'm a Celtic mutt - half-Irish, half-Scottish and raised in London. I believe in counting your blessings and sharing them whenever the occasion arises, which is why Hazel Hollows is on VRBO. My parents built their dream home after a long life of hard work. You can feel the love they poured into the house when you visit every room.

Owner/ Manager purchased this house in 1998

Why Owner/ Manager chose Athlone

As already mentioned, this is a real family home that was built over a number of years by my parents, so it's not the usual vacation rental. Expect to find the kind of quality you would expect in your own home, along with the kind of cleanliness for which Irish homes are renowned! Our circumstances have changed and we're not able to stay there full time at the moment so it's our pleasure to share it with you.

What makes this house unique

It's great to visit Athlone - or even to attend events at the nearby Hodson Bay hotel. But if you like space, tranquility and beauty, Hazel Hollows is for you. The walk down the country lane is gorgeous any time of year. Athlone is a short 8-minute drive from this Irish vacation home.

The snooker room is really a 'snooker house'. The ultimate man cave, it sports a full-size snooker table complete with overhead lighting. My brothers and the local kids spent a lot of time in that room when they were young and it's fun to have something that will get everyone away from the TV.

The kitchen is huge. Like most Irish homes, it's where people naturally tend to hang out. The utility room containing a second fridge plus washer and dryer is located between the kitchen and the back door leading to the snooker room.

We recently fitted a log burner that gets everything toasty in minutes. (Of course we have central heating too.) We think you'll like it.

The trees after which the house is named are located at the back of the house. Hazelnuts anyone?! In the summer, you can pick blackberries by the cartload just outside the gates.

The house manager, Margaret, lives close by. She is super friendly, helpful and resourceful. Margaret will have the gates open and be ready to greet you when you arrive. Just call her when you know your arrival time. (Her contact info is in the House Manual which will be emailed to you once your booking is confirmed.)

Each of the bedrooms is extremely private. The large living room is across the hall from the spacious dining room and kitchen. However, the dining room and kitchen both have doors connecting them, as well as doors to the hallway. Think 'Ireland meets America' and that's the design! It's a gorgeous, welcoming home. There is a new log burner in the living room and the house is kept to an immaculate standard.

Nice central Ireland House!

  • 4 of 5

Stayed for 2 weeks and enjoyed this house! Great location to the midlands and the west. The house is also just outside of Athlone and on Lough Ree which few tourists take advantage of, so you really get a taste of real Ireland!

Like going to Grandma's (if you had an Irish grandma)

  • 4 of 5

This large home is in a good location just outside one of the oldest cities in Ireland. Lots of history surrounds it. The lane was busier than we expected and had many more homes than imagined, but was quiet. The cow and calf were no trouble at all. Margaret, the house manager, was helpful and all was in order for our stay despite our phones not working.

Arriving here was like arriving at your grandmother's house after she died...everything she ever had was still there, untouched, just Grandma was missing. This made for a little inconvenience as we had to clear some space for our luggage, hanging clothes, etc, but it was homey! The faucets were leaky but there was hot water. Keying the doors alike would be helpful as there were a lot of keys to sort through each time we went in or out. The lack of internet service was a handicap and will hopefully be rectified shortly. We did access the free wi-fi at Hodson Bay Hotel, but that is not secure. The separate snooker house was like a museum from WWII. (The snooker championship happened to be on TV while we were there, so we learned a bit about the game though we didn't play.)

We had a very enjoyable time touring Ireland from this location and would recommend it to anyone who wants a centrally located, quiet get-away.

Owner's Response: Glad you had a good time! Very confused (dismayed?!) to hear the house likened to your grandmother's ... I'd like to clarify for future guests that the closets are huge and empty: none of our personal items are left in the house and it is stylishly furnished with minimal knick-knacks! I haven't had any reports of leaking faucets but will definitely investigate:-) I'm pleased to report that high speed broadband finally reached our village! We now have 1000 GB super high speed fiber broadband and premium tv package (80 channels) as of May 21.

Lovely home near Athlone

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our stay in this lovely three bedroom home near Athlone. The home is gorgeous inside and beautifully furnished. It's a short drive to Athlone, and really reasonably close to Dublin. The only reason we couldn't go with five stars is that the outdoors needs work, and the patio is pretty much unusable. But the home itself is lovely, and the people of Athalone very welcoming!

Owner's Response: So glad you had a good time! We understand the 4 star rating: unfortunately our gardener got sick and we struggled to find a replacement. Everything back on track now. We loved having you as guests and you are welcome back anytime! Best wishes, Caitlin

Great place to stay to get off the grid. Lovely home we had as base of operations for sightseeing.

  • 3 of 5

Biggest negatives were no access to Internet. I own a small business and was having difficulty communicating. This was shown to be included when property was booked and didn't find out till shortly before we left that it was not there. Also noted that air conditioning was available in the amenities and it was not. Couldn't open the windows at night due to no screens and I was very warm. Guessing this also is a European thing as it was this way everywhere. Beds very hard as well but was also told that is European thing from others and turned out to be true. Every place we stayed was rock hard. Overall all though was very nice and charming. Caretaker Margaret was great as well.

Owner's Response: Hi Dianna, Apologies for the lack of clarity in the listing description. I did indicate that the rural areas of Ireland are awaiting rollout of high speed internet and that our hands are tied in that regard until the grid reaches us. It is already three months since the advised date and a rumor is going around that Eir have run out of money ... Grrr ... We are awaiting a new installation date. The beds are extremely high quality and designed to ensure that anyone who has a bad back has a wonderful night's sleep. Perhaps the Irish have worse backs than other nations?! You've got me thinking;-) Lastly, yes we don't have AC - really no need for it in Ireland. However, the box was checked/ticked in error. Apologies for not catching that. I hope the charm of the house and the surrounding areas made up for the miscommuniciation. Best wishes, Caitlin

Hazel Hollows

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Hazel Hollows during a two week trip to Ireland. The home was absolutely perfect, there were five of us. Margaret the house manager was extremely accommodating and helpful. The home had everything we needed. I would definitely rent it again. We enjoyed the Snooker room and the quiet location. The bedrooms were big, the bathrooms were large and kitchen was very well equipped. This is a lovely in a very central location. You are close to Dublin, Galway and Dun Laoghaire. Athlone Castle was lovely and very interesting. The Hodson Bay Hotel was minutes away and there is a nice golf course minutes away as well. This is a great place for a family vacation.
