Chalet Elaine is nestled on our 3-acre estate, populated with palms, bamboo, redwoods, and colorful tropical plants and flowers. Our estate was recently featured in the sold-out 2016 Spring Garden Tour.
Our neighborhood is near the top of Harrison Grade in the banana belt, a moderate microclimate suitable for growing many tropical plants, and usually above the occasional fog that might cover low lying areas. Cooled by the moderating ocean breezes, it doesn't have the extreme heat and cold variations of inland areas or the humidity of river areas. Surrounding us are vineyards, farmland, and country living, with a high representation of artists, musicians, intellectuals and those in the healing arts.
The Russian River Appellation is among the best growing region for Pinot and Chardonnay, which attests to the many top wineries (and wine tasting opportunities.) The Foodie scene is unsurpassed, with a broad selection of great restaurants. Entertainment abounds, a beloved Farmer's market takes place every Friday afternoon in Occidental during the summer, with many others in the area as well. The adventurous can ride a zip line through the local redwoods.
Should you desire a massage, or simply have peacefulness in their Japanese garden, the Osmosis Day Spa is first rate and just 10 minutes away in Freestone.
Doran Beach among many others is wonderful for a day by the ocean, nearby are wetlands for birding, and the headlands over Bodega Bay invite a spectacular hike - bring binoculars for whale watching.
The nearby village of Occidental is a treat. Do spend some time walking along Main St to discover good restaurants and taverns, an organic grocery, and interesting shops to browse through. At night you'll usually see lots of people having fun.
The town of Sebastopol offers the Rialto movie cinemas with special art and music features; nearby is the new Barlow district with wine tasting rooms from top wineries, restaurants, local coffee house, and Tibetan art. The park, across from Whole Foods, holds a popular farmer's market on Sundays; Main Street is a fascinating stroll of music stores, New Age shops, bookstores, coffee houses and restaurants. All of these form an easily walkable nexus downtown.
For those who just want to snuggle in, the entertainment system includes Comcast Xfinity X1 with voice command, and premium channel providers such as HBO and ESPN. AppleTV 4 provides additional internet choices such as iTunes and Netflix. ChromeCast 2 and the Samsung 46" internet-enabled HDTV widen your programming choices. The audiophile sound system includes a NAD 24-bit amplifier with Gallo Acoustics speakers. High speed 200 mbps WiFi is available.
We provide Nespresso coffee + espresso, teas, and condiments. For your cooking enjoyment, the kitchen includes a GE Profile convection microwave, a FlashExpress infrared toaster oven, a Breville juicer, a crock pot and other implements. First rate local restaurants are all nearby.
The dressing area has a spacious closet with several drawers, and a built-in ironing station is at hand.
A whole house soft water system includes a decalcifier, UV sanitizer, and charcoal activated final stage filter for pure delicious water out of every faucet. Our 2-person hot tub is cleaned and refilled with this fresh water for each guest stay, and the water recycled to our gardens after your stay, so no harsh spa chemical treatments are needed.
PV solar panels grace the roof, promoting high end luxury with ecological sensibilities. A ClipperCreek Level 2 32A EV charger allows you to recharge your EV; Tesla owners can fast charge on our 80A Tesla charger by special arrangement.

Lainey (pictured) lived for several years in Paris in her 20's, and later, Boston, for her graduate work; her european sensibilities help inform the delights of our chalet. She is a practicing psychotherapist, speaks French fluently (of course) and is my fellow adventurer and best friend. I (Chris) am a former technology entrepreneur with current interests in neuroscience, process and somatic psychology. We love to swim and hike, play ping-pong, and enjoy excellent cuisine, wines, travel, and good friends.

We wanted to move from Los Altos to wine country, and friends suggested West County Sonoma. We fell in love with its character, its interesting and friendly residents, and the best of wine country and restaurants in a rural area without the traffic.
We were fortunate to find this property, formerly an exotic bamboo nursery with lush, exotic plants. We completely remodeled both the guest cottage and the main house. We found ourselves adjacent to the Village of Occidental, home to colorful and varied beings. Twenty minutes from the ocean, twenty minutes from Armstrong Woods for hiking, the world famous Osmosis day spa down the road, we continue to uncover new gems.
Our chalet is in an accessible, central location: In Occidental, just over a mile away, we shop at the local Bohemian market for organic and local produce and Gonella's for more standard fare with its large selection of wines and ice cream. For morning people, consider stopping by the cozy Union Hotel Cafe for a coffee and decadent cookie. Howard Station Cafe, the Tavern Microbrewery, the Union restaurant, Negri's, and the Hazel restaurant are just a few choices, all with different styles and clientele.
Chalet Elaine is in a wonderful spot - secluded, and private but a quick drive to Occidental or Sebastopol. The property is spotlessly clean with extra linens at the ready. The owner was prompt and helpful with the one interaction we had. We highly recommend staying here.
This was our first time staying at this wonderful cottage. The grounds and garden area are beautiful with a large variety of plantings. The cottage itself is bright and imaculate with plenty of natural light. There are a lot of very thoughtful extras built into the house. If you arrive during college football season, the 46 inch TV is a welcome sight! The kitchen has everything one would need to spend a long time there. A huge walk-in shower with a towel warming rack was very different for us...in a very good way. The bed was very comfortable and the hot tube access just off the slider into the bedroom was perfect. The owners are very good and punctual communicators. They start out the visit perfectly with a bottle of wine, some meats and cheeses ready to go. We really enjoyed being out of town a short, beautiful driving distance. Occidental is a neat little town with several really good restaraunts to choose from. We had an exceptional week not a small part due to the wonderful accomodations. Thank You!
my wife and i stayed at your lovely cottage last june and had a wonderful time. the place is comfortable, smartly designed and decorated, and well located. we enjoyed ourselves (nice hot tub!) and appreciated your assistance in making our weekend work out so well. we look forward to returning.
We throughly enjoyed this beautifully landscaped property, the well appointed home, the colourful and tasteful decor, the comfortable bed, the hot tub and the welcoming hospitality of the hosts. We were very pleased to be welcomed with a platter of excellent cheese, fresh fruit, great coffee and have use of a new Nespresso coffee machine as well as other coffee options, fresh milk and a bottle of wine, along with other kitchen edible essentials that made our stay very easy. We appreciated the quality of the body wash soaps provided in the spacious tiled shower with a heated towel rack. The approach and drive to reach this lovely gated rural property was also a very enjoyable part of our 5 day stay.
Thank you so much for a great stay, we thought your place was very warm and welcoming. After arriving it was so nice to be able to sit down, relax and have a glass or 2 of wine with cheese and crackers that you supplied for us. This is our first time going though v.r.b.o. and we were not sure what to expect. We will be back in the near future. Thank you again for such a wonderful getaway. Sincerely, Jim and Sandy.
My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed this lovely property. Great care was given in the decorating and set up to ensure the utmost comfort of the guests. Everything from the bathroom supplies, the comfort of the linens and towels, the kitchen stocked with coffee and spices, the wine and cheese plate waiting for us at the time of our arrival, to the outdoor eating and lounging areas -- all were superb. We stayed here in the middle of September and took day trips to wineries, redwoods and the coast, as well as the charming towns of Healdsburg and Sonoma. Thank you Chris and Elaine for offering this fantastic vacation home.
