Overview

About the property

Cozy Cabin, Sleeps 4!

Nestled in the forest near the toe of the Kennicott Glacier, our 5 eco friendly, private log cabins offer a comfortable place to rest after a day of exploring the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park.

Our cabins, completed in 2015, were modeled after nearby original trapper cabins. Each cabin has 2 full size beds, a small kitchen set up with running water, and a drinking water filtration system. The cabins share a shower house with hot water (also considered a luxury in this neck of the woods!), along with an outhouse. Linens, dishware, and towels are all provided. Bicycles are also available for our guests!

McCarthy, Alaska was not the first town established to support the mining town of Kennicott. The town of Blackburn was first established in the early 1900’s as a settlement of hopeful workers and businessmen. In 1911, the Blackburn Roadhouse was built. It was a two-story structure built with logs and milled wood, and at the time it was considered the “biggest log structure in the district.” Because its location was not on the direct route of the Copper River and Northwestern Railway, Blackburn did not endure. The Blackburn schoolhouse was hauled to Kennicott and the remaining buildings fell into disrepair. All that remains are indentations where buildings once stood, and one sole outhouse.

Our cabins are built on the old townsite of Blackburn. They offer a peaceful setting for visitors to spend the night away from the hustle and bustle of downtown McCarthy, yet close enough to walk or bike to town to visit the museum or have a bite to eat!

About Mark and Livvi

In 1996, Mark’s love of the wilderness brought him to McCarthy. Soon after, he bought land and built a log cabin which he lives in today. He has worked for the National Park Service on the historical building restoration project in Kennicott for 15 years, providing him with a cultivated knowledge of the Copper Valley. In 2012, Mark purchased 2.5 acres of land along the Kennicott Wagon Road, with dreams of building small cabins to rent to guests visiting the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park.

Livvi first visited McCarthy in 1998 and returned in 2013 to work as a guide. She and Mark met in 2013, but it wasn’t until a trip to Central America that they began dreaming and working together on Blackburn Cabins. In 2015, construction on the cabins was complete, and Livvi joined Mark to add the finishing touches and to begin managing the cabins.

Mark continues to work for the National Park Service, but they are working toward becoming self sufficient. Mark and Livvi plan to build additional cabins to be available in coming years.

And we hope to see you this summer at Blackburn Cabins!

Comfortable, stylish and rustic cabins - We loved it! McCarthy is a special place

  • 5 of 5

Mark and Levvi are awesome! The cabins are perfect for a couple or a family. The grill outside with a whole set up of pots and pans is an excellent addition. The location is perfect and the bikes helped a lot! They picked us up at the foot bridge so we were able to bring all of our stuff in such as our cooler. If you are looking for an awesome McCarthy experience but still sleeping well, I highly recommend Blackburn Cabins. McCarthy is a very neat place, Kennecot and the glaciers are amazing, but the Blackburn cabins really made the whole experience perfect!! Thank you Mark and Levvi!

Beautiful spot, super convenient for a trip into kennicot or McCarthy by foot or bike.

Outstanding! I'm almost afraid to give too good a review knowing that it will probably be fully booked the next time I try to rent a cabin... But Blackburn cabins deserves it.

Everything was thought of, right down to the coffee and the rental bikes. Saved us the trouble of dragging camping gear onto the airplane and sleeping out in the rain. Terrific service! I'd recommend to anyone.

Immaculate

  • 5 of 5

We were greeted at the bridge to McCarthy with a friendly smile and kind offer to have our gear loaded and delivered into the cabin. It was an offer we could not refuse as we came prepared to have some good meals, drinks, and adventures in the backcountry. We were given great ideas on some of the area attractions to go sightsee, or just listen to the Glacier cracking through the silent night and day. We went on a cross country ski trek up to Kennecott and we loved the trails and views. The cabin was a great place to come and relax after a day of trekking. The beds were so comfortable and the propane furnace keeps the cabin very comfortable. After some relaxing, we walked 3/4 mile to McCarthy for some great food, drink, and laughs with the locals. We can't wait to come back in the summer to see McCarthy in its hustle and bustle surrounded by green trees and huge Mountains. We will be back to Blackburn Cabins! Thank you!
