Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday home in Howe - The River House

Perfect for fishing, canoeing, relaxing and visiting Shipshewana, which is just a short 8 mile drive through beautiful Amish country. A very quiet area right on the river. We have had an otter swim by our house. We watched a deer swimming just upstream. For bird lovers, we have seen egrets, osprey, a kingfisher, sand hill cranes, and a frequent visitor is the blue heron. Woodpeckers, finches, bluebirds, hummingbirds, etc. are at home here. For the fishermen there are smallmouth and largemouth bass, pike, walleye, crappie, blue gills, perch, catfish and more. Just across the water is a nature preserve. This is a great spot for nature lovers!

We have 2 canoes and a flat bottom boat available for a small fee of $15 each per day. It is just a short paddle upstream to beautiful 60 acre Pigeon Lake.

The house is two stories. The downstairs has a cabin feel. It consists of an open living room, dining area and kitchen as well as a bedroom and small half bath. The upstairs offers a landing, very large great room, nice bedroom and bath with a shower. The great room is large, nicely furnished and offers a beautiful view of the river. There are tables on both floors that overlook the river. The large porch was recently updated with new paint and new screens.

The house features 2 bedrooms (1 queen bed upstairs/2 twin beds downstairs)

and a great room upstairs with a futon. The River House can comfortably sleep 6.

There is one bathroom with a shower upstairs and a half bath downstairs.

Prepare meals in a fully equipped kitchen – oven, stove, refrigerator, microwave, toaster, coffee pot, new pots and pans, popcorn popper, blender, etc. Sorry, no dishwasher, but the view over the sink makes dishwashing a pleasure!

The house has central heat and central air.

At the end of the day you can sit around the fire ring or on the screened porch and listen to the owls.

About Kenneth or Nancy Helsel

We have lived in Northeast Indiana since 1987. Our home is at Adams Lake, in the same county as the River House. We have a daughter and 2 granddaughters that live in the Seattle, WA area. One of our sons lives in Sanford, MI with his family which includes our 3 year old granddaughter and a baby boy. Our youngest son and his wife live in Durham, NC. We are retired empty nesters that live with 2 golden retrievers and 2 white cats. Ken loves to hunt and fish and is an all around handyman. He has done a lot of work on the this house and we are glad to finally be ready to share it!

Why Kenneth or Nancy Helsel chose Indiana

We looked for a long time for an investment property that we could afford. Once we looked at the view of the river from the upstairs window, we were sold. It's a beautiful place to have your morning coffee. The house needed a lot of cosmetic help, as well as a roof. Ken and our son Chad put a new roof on the house the first year. Then came the inside. All the flooring has been replaced and the walls were stripped of their wallpaper, refinished and painted. It is so relaxing to sit on the porch and listen to the birds. We took many naps out there in the zero gravity chairs during the renovations.

What makes this house unique

This is a great spot for a couples vacation. The men can fish and the women can shop Shipshewana! There are many good restaurants in the area. It is fun to just drive around and look at the farms, flowers, and animals. This is just a beautiful, laid back area.

Perfect Girls Weekend

  • 5 of 5

My friends and I recently enjoyed a perfect girls weekend at the River House. The house is fully-equipped, clean and comfortable. We enjoyed our morning coffee and afternoon glass of wine sitting in the screened in porch overlooking the river as well as a roaring campfire in the evening with wood provided by the hosts. We had fun canoeing on the river to the small, nearby lake, taking in a winery and visiting some of the nearby quaint communities. If you are looking for a relaxing getaway this is the place. We'll be back!

Nice get away for Memorial Day

  • 5 of 5

My family, including our poodle, stayed for a quick getaway over Memorial Day. The cabin was very clean and GPS took you right to the driveway. Nancy and Ken met us, showed us around and answered all our questions, then left us to enjoy the cabin and view.

It was nice to sit outside by the firepit and watch the river roll by and the guys fish off the dock. There were plenty of chairs and firewood. The neighbors are close, but not intrusive. You have plenty of space to yourself. We spent most of our time downstairs in the kitchen area or outside. It was nice to be unplugged for awhile. (There is no Internet and connectivity, even with Verizon, is a bit sketchy. However, we came to relax so that wasn't an issue.)

You are centrally located to many of the attractions such as Shipshewana, Elkhart, etc. If you go to Shipshewana make sure you check out the E&S bulk food store. It was an adventure all to itself. Plus, you can play with puppies at the store next door.

All in all, this was a great trip. Our deposit was returned within the week, so that was appreciated. The only suggestions I can think of would be instructions on how to turn on the Kureig (it took us about ten minutes to figure out the power button was on the back - not sure what that says about us :-), maybe including a plastic pitcher to make lemonade, and possibly a small table on the screen porch to play cards or eat.

Thanks for sharing your cabin and we will probably be back.

Wonderful experience.

  • 5 of 5

This is a lovely house and beautifully located! The large room upstairs is roomy and the view out the picture window so pretty. Nancy and Ken are wonderful hosts. We thought they had so many little extras like a Keurig and K-cups to start you off, a little frig upstairs (equipped with some water bottles), great TV, comfortable beds, lots of towels and blankets, sheets and pillows provided and even the night lights were well placed. Wonderful places to eat and grocery stores nearby and the kitchen has every appliance you may need, they even have bottled water available. All this and a reasonable price! P.S. We saw an eagle, blue heron, osprey, Canadian geese and their goslings, turtles and many songbirds.

Lovely cabin by the river.

  • 5 of 5

My sister and I and two of our friends have spent a weekend in October here for the past two years. The cabin is spotless. The upstairs bed is very comfortable. Everything you need to cook your meals except the food. Want to eat out? There are numerous restaurants nearby. A very relaxing atmosphere. Walking distance to Pigeon Lake. 5-10 minutes from Shipshewana.

Highly recommend this property. Reasonably priced. Love staying here!
