Not quite as it seems...

  • 2 of 5

Looks are not everything and while this was a charmingly decorated apartment, in general ,some amenities were lacking.

The biggest problem was with heat and hot water for showering which were really only functioning well on our first and last days. During our stay the nights were quite cold and damp and without constant heating during the day as well the rooms never really got warm. We were using every blanket and our sweat clothes. Extra blankets were available in the closet although one had holes and all the bed linens were very shabby.

The second biggest problem is the fact that a neighboring property has a large and loud dog pack on premise that was a constant irritant at night: all night at odd hours until about 4am when the Rooster joined in. The nights were not restful and with mostly glass doors there is nothing to help shut out the barking and crowing.

As far as space, the two rooms and bath are big enough to squeeze in 4 adults but more comfortably fit two and perhaps a small child or teen. The bathroom was impressively tiled and very attractive but the shower space is so small that the plastic curtain sticks to one throughout any attempts to bathe. Good luck with water pressure and temperature. Also it might be better to pack your own towels as those provided are very thin and rough from being washed in hard water.

The kitchen stove had three working burners and an oven. Ample pots and pans and cutlery are provided as well as plates and glasses. Due to very hard water it seemed better to cook with bottled water from the small supermarket in town. Some of the pans have seen hard previous use and are best avoided.

The owners were pleasant enough but preoccupied with Easter celebrations at the time of our stay and admitted to having forgotten to inspect the unit prior to our stay. This after we mentioned the floors and bathroom had not been very clean when we arrived. (An investment of 1,20 euros at the market when we bought water seemed the best way to deal with it as we like a clean place.) We are sure they will be more aware next time.

There is pretty easy access to the superhighway and you can see quite a bit of the Island as long as you plan to take the train to Palermo; it is impossible to park near anything worth seeing there. Food is excellent and lunch out is the best value anywhere.

Innere Ruhe im Angesicht des Meeres

  • 5 of 5

Einmal Balestrate, immer Balestrate

  • 5 of 5

  • 4 of 5

  • 5 of 5

Vielen Dank!

Car: recommended

Balestrate, with its 7000 inhabitants, is a typical Sicilian seaside town. And it is located only 40 km west of Palermo in the middle of the famous Gulf of Castellammare. With the connectivity to the highway (highway exit 2 miles away) it is very convenient to get there by car. You can reach Balestrate from Palermo Airport and from Trapani Airport by highway. Distance to Palermo Airport is 25 km (no aircraft noise!) and Trapani Airport 50 km. Our venue is at the highway exit - so you don’t have to search for long time. No parking problems. Highway is free of cost.

The vibrant life pulsates in the streets of Balestrate. The bars offer the most delicious dolci, gelati and espressi. In the restaurants you can enjoy Sicilian cuisine, whether frutti di mare, pasta, pizza or meat and a vino di casa. If you enjoy cooking, you have the opportunity every day to buy fresh fish directly from the fishermen or fresh vegetables and fruits from the farmers. The friendliness and pleasant nature of its people make the tourists feel native. There is no mass tourism in Balestrate. With its location directly near sea and its marina, Balestrate offers optimum conditions for motor sports and fishing, and its long kilometres of fine sandy beaches with turquoise water invite you for surfing and diving. You can hire sun loungers and parasols on the beach, but there are also many open beaches. Art lovers visit churches and town squares at their own cost. The landscape around Balestrate is characterised by olive groves, wheat and vegetable fields, citrus groves and vineyards. Balestrate is very centrally located for visiting the various attractions whether by car, bus or train.

We have prepared trip schedules for our guests, indeed, to the most beautiful places here in north-western Sicily.

Palermo / Monreale 40 km, Trapani / Erice 45 km, Segesta 20 km, Lo Zingaro 25 km, Selinunte 50 km. You can also book organised day tours in Balestrate.

We arrange for your transfer to and from the airport - we would be glad to give you more detailed information.
