Why drive to the Catskills to hike the many public hiking trails when you can rent Bliss Estate and have miles and miles of trails to yourself. Hike 5+ hours without seeing a human being. Then spend the night in Scandinavian style Manor house that sleeps up to 12 (8 adults, 4 children) and has lots of room to lounge, including a classical library with the book collection of a famous author. Kick back and browse whatever books you'd like while you grill and look at stunning view. Renters may hunt the property with permission from owners - premiere hunting. Renters may also fly fish the Neversink River frontage - which is private to this estate. Fabulous road biking in the area, nearby farms, Catskills restaurants and 30 minute drive to the Shawangunk Ridge and all the fun of Ulster County. Tons of nearby additional hiking (if you somehow exhaust hiking on 400 acres) and near the famous Frost Valley YMCA. Great year round -- Fall leaf peaking, winter cross country skiing, Spring and Summer cookouts, hikes and croquet on the lawn.
Bliss Estate is also for sale. (Note for Renters: House showings are not held when the house is rented out.)
We are a young couple with a new baby and we love to use our upstate home. But work obligations keep us in NYC sometimes and we want others to enjoy the estate when we can't get up there.
louise mckee purchased this chateau / country house in 2014
It's so rare to find so much private hiking and fishing. And Claryville is a totally undeveloped gem in the Catskills where most land is still natural forest.
The home was designed by Peter Pennoyer, a very toney architect who more often designs Hamptons homes. It was built by Louis Auchincloss, a famous NYC writer, and so it has a lovely library. It's a great place for families or groups of friends alike.
This is an amazing property and the house is really cool. It is not your typical boring house. It was clearly designed for getting together with friends and family but the bedroom suites are very private. Entertaining on the huge deck is wonderful with dramatic views of the valley below. The common room with a fireplace - surrounded by windows - opens onto a covered area and then a few steps to the deck. The kitchen is perfect for big cooking - with access to a formal(ish) dining area under the library. The second floor library is circular with on opening (with railings) overlooking the first level dining table. There is also access to the common room with a serving window.
The house is built into the hillside so as you approach the house (far off the road) you drive through a covered portal into a secure cul-de-sac. The space above the portal is a beautiful sunroom that can be used as a kid's playroom or used as another bedroom. You will feel like you have your own castle - that is how we felt.
Beautiful home, incredibly designed and the layout allows solitude while providing room for many guests. The energy in the home is peaceful and relaxing. The beds are comfortable, everything works and the homeowner makes sure you know the layout and all the details for an easy, comfortable stay. I didn't want to leave. A perfect, A+ property.
The house was beautiful clean and very accommodating to our family. We came with small children and everything was set up perfectly for us (including cribs, high chairs, and games) The house is a true sanctuary we felt as if we stepped into and alternate universe away from the Hussle of city life. The views were incredible and we really enjoyed sitting on the deck outside. The rooms were spacious and clean. Although no air conditioning the house is naturally cool and there are many windows all over the house and we were able to enjoy the natural breeze on the mountain. We would definitely go again we had a really peaceful weekend!
A group of three couples stayed at this property in November, and couldn't believe just how wonderful a weekend we had here. We spent the whole weekend here without getting in our cars once, how great is that!
The house itself sprawls out enough that for even 3 couples, we all felt that we had plenty of privacy. The kitchen well equipped enough to cook for all of us, and plenty of living space to lounge around-- inside, or out.
Of course, we wound up spending most of our time out of the house. We had two solid days hiking on the property, and never felt like we were running out of things to do. Lots of interesting old stone structures, a very serene river, and trails that either challenge with a bit of uphill or meander through the woods.
The owner is fantastic, with very prompt and helpful responses. We'll certainly be coming back when the weather gets warmer to enjoy even more of this out door paradise.
This is a beautiful house in an amazing location. We spent a long weekend here in late summer and enjoyed it so much we returned for another long weekend amidst the splendid autumn colors recently.
You know you are headed someplace special as you turn off the road and access the house by a long drive, which insures privacy and makes you feel that you are on your own private preserve, which as the property totals some 400 acres you are!
There are several different trails running over the property which you can explore for hours using the trail maps provided (although we were never able to locate the old farmhouse foundation!). There is even a section of the Neversink River that runs through the property, which is quite picturesque and relaxing to just hang out by.
After a day of exploring there is a wonderful deck on which to kick back, fire up the grill, and watch a bald eagle soar overhead.
We were a small group for both visits, but the size and layout of the house ensures there is plenty of room for larger groups to spread out. The bedrooms are located on opposite ends of the house. It would be a perfect setting for a large family or group of friends.
There is a nearby diner and general store which fills basic needs, finer dining is a bit farther afield.
The owner is very pleasant, responsive and easy to deal with. I would heartily recommend this house to anyone and I am certain that we will be back before long as well.
What an absolutely perfect weekend! Very quiet, very peaceful, and totally secluded. Basically your own private woods to hike around and explore! We spent half the day hiking on Saturday and all day on Sunday and never ran out of things to see. And then at night, we sat on the deck and looked up at the billions of stars. The house itself is gorgeous and very large. It was only my wife and I staying there but I bet a couple families or even 4-5 couples could stay there and not feel crowded at all. And Louise, the owner, was so easy and pleasant to work with. She answered all of my emails promptly (sometimes within minutes). I would highly recommend this house to anyone.
Home is situated on private 400 acres in the heart of the Catksills. The town of Claryville is largely owned by NYC as part of water reservoir and as a result has been left natural. Drive miles and miles in town and feel like you're in a nature reserve. Hike 5+ hours on our property and see no one.
