WHERE IT IS

Red Dirt is located in the sweet spot of the East Hampton/Amagansett border, 3 miles to the best ocean beaches, both Villages and the bay beaches.

Red Dirt is private, quiet and beautifully furnished with family life in mind.

CENTRALITY OF LOCATION

It is a quick, beautiful ride on country roads to Main Beach, Louse point, Albert’s and Barnes Landings, Three Mile Harbor, the trendy Village of East Hampton, or sleepier Amagansett. All of these destinations are 5-7 minutes by car and avoid crowded village traffic.

THE HOUSE ITSELF

As you approach the house, you will first see the back deck with sliders to the living room. Continue along and around to the brick-red front door, retrieve your key from the lockbox - and you are home.

The house has been freshly renovated, preserving its original character, with a brand new open kitchen and a deep soaking tub. It has central air, but also skylights that operate with a remote, to maximize a fresh cross breeze. (No worries about rain -the skylights close automatically when they sense precipitation.)

On the main level you’ll find: living, dining, kitchen and a bath. The kitchen opens onto the dining area and beyond that the living room and deck. Near the front door is a renovated bathroom with a cedar-lined shower,

The three bedrooms are on two separate levels. Two are a few steps above the main: the master with a queen bed and its own deck; a children's, with a pair of twin beds and a large collection of toys and kid lit.

The third bedroom is on its own level a few steps down from the main. It has a queen bed, a large sitting area and sliders to an outside patio and the yard.

The new soaker tub is on the main sleeping level

The cedar lined shower in the main floor bath. This bathroom also has an entrance directly from the outside, if you want to wash off the sand without bringing it into the rest of the house.

The library is on the top floor. It is well stocked with books and big comfortable reading chairs.

There is excellent wifi throughout the house, a computer in the library , a tv and sound system on the main living floor, with a collection of dvds and cds in the cabinet below.

There are also a washer and dryer, a dishwasher, a grill, andbeach equipment (chairs, cooler, beach towels)

INFO BOOK

On the dining table you will find a RED NOTEBOOK with things you may want to know about the house, the area, the beaches, shops, grocery stores, restaurants and phone numbers for any help you may need, casual or emergency.

About Naomi Shohan

Tony and Naomi are filmmakers. Our son Leo is twelve years old. We live in New York City and travel a lot for work. East Hampton is one of our favorite places on the planet. We love to be there together, working or playing and usually have another family or a couple of Leo's classmates along.

When we're not out enjoying the area, Naomi likes to putter around the house and in the yard, while Tony takes care of the music and Leo plays indoors and out with his pals. Everybody loves to cook in the newly renovated kitchen.

Why Naomi Shohan chose East Hampton

We love this home because it is private and secluded, yet very close to every place we love to be. Red Dirt is is a five minute drive (or a beautiful bike ride -Naomi's favorite) from both Villages, East Hampton and Amagansett, AS WELL AS any of the ocean and the bay beaches.

What makes this house unique

Red Dirt has a unique design we found nowhere else during our house hunt. The floor plan is a 'zig-zag' split-level, with four separate levels just a few stairs up or down from one another. This unique layout combines privacy with easy access; the adults can retreat to read or work, but kids are always near enough to supervise.

Great house, excellent location

  • 5 of 5

I recently had a guest from Italy visiting for just over 2 weeks and they stayed in this house. The location is perfect if you want to be centrally located as the description says, you really can drive just about anywhere from this location. The house itself is well kept and in very good condition. It is also very spacious with plenty of room. The owner was very friendly and accommodating as we needed to extend our stay and did so without hesitation. I highly recommend this house!

For us, East Hampton is all about taking it easy.

The ocean beaches are fantastic and friendly, with great snack bars at the Main and Atlantic Avenue beaches. We love to spend hours in the water and along the sand. Bonfires are allowed in the evening and people gather with picnics and wine. If you stay late enough, you'll see the Milky Way.

A local treasure is the Springs General Store. It has been there for eons and is known for its fresh, simple fare. You'll find it jammed in the morning with locals buying coffee and again at lunch.

Our favorite place to kayak is the inlet behind the Store. You can rent a kayak there then paddle out to Louse Point, which has a narrow passage to the Sound beyond. The Point is gorgeous and a nice place to hang out and rest. If you like the open water, you can continue into the Sound and along the coast. We usually go out for a couple of hours then return to the General Store for our lunch.

Also at the General Store: On Sunday afternoons around 5, local musicians gather on the porch for an informal jam. All welcome to join. A real treat whether you participate or just sit and listen.

If you are an art lover, visit the Pollack House where Jackson Pollack and Lee Krasner worked and lived. Pollack invented his drip paintings there and purchased his paint at -you guessed it!-the Springs General Store.

A great day trip is a visit to the Montauk Light stopping for a lobster roll in Amagansett (at Lobster Roll on Hwy 27). Kids need to be 49" tall to climb the light, but even if you don't the rocky coastline is beautiful to explore.

Downtown East Hampton is full of high end shops and restaurants for a fancy afternoon on the town. Or, you can skip the shopping and catch a movie at the local theater and ice cream at Scoop du Jour.

Three Mile Harbor has wonderful places to hire a boat for a day if you enjoy fishing. We like to go out in the morning then home to grill the catch and catch a nap.

East Hampton is pretty flat so bicycling is easy and fun. The roads around Red Dirt are beautiful. You can be at the beach in 15 minutes, Louse Point in 7, the General Store in 10.Or just get lost. Great Bike rentals in Amagansett, 2 miles from the house.

Sometimes a quiet day is all you want. Red Dirt has a large book, cd and dvd library and plenty of places to lounge.

Don't miss sunset at Louse Point. None better.
