About Don Thousand

I had the good fortune to grow up in Newport Beach, California. For many years I worked with my Father and Brother designing and building specialty vehicles. I have traveled throughout Mexico, visited Japan several times, and made trips to Europe and Central America. I love being on and around the water, and play beach volleyball when I get the chance.

Don Thousand purchased this house in 2013

Why Don Thousand chose Mexico

I first came to this "rancho" over 35 years ago. I was immediately captivated be the beauty and serenity. It has been my favorite weekend destination ever since. I built my first home here in 1999. Two years ago I was given the opportunity to purchase the entire rancho. I have since been in the process of upgrading and expanding it to provide an even more enjoyable experience for visitors. This "guest house" was my first project, and more recently I developed a campground area. My catch phrase is "Rancho Mil.....Tranquility on the Rio Hardy".

What makes this house unique

The Rancho covers 1000 meters of riverfront on the Rio Hardy, which forms the western boundary of the Colorado River Delta, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. "The Delta" is a stopover for migrating birds on the Pacific Flyway, and one of the most important eco-systems in North America. Inspired by the efforts and accomplishments of the Sonoran Institute, I am focused on creating an ecotourism destination to enhance visitors experiences. Flanked by the Sierra Cucapa mountains to the west and surrounded by thousands of acres of open desert, it is hard not to feel at ease here. Beautiful sunrises and moon rises over the river, captivating sunsets behind the mountains and a million stars in the night sky are all common occurrences!!

I recommend guests call me prior to their visit. Although easy to find, it helps to have a brief description of how to get to the camp. I suggest you shop for your food and supplies before your arrival. There is a small village nearby with some great local cooks that can prepare meals for delivery with advanced notice. The closest store/market is 6-12 miles away depending on what is open. There are a couple cantinas nearby which are normally open weekends but not always. Again, It's best to call me prior to your visit so I can ensure everything will be ready.
