Great cabin nestled in the wood of 500k plus acres of public hunting woods. On the Ochlocknee river which has great catfish and brim fishing while you aren't out in the woods. Bring a kayak, canoe or riverboat and tootle up and down the river and enjoy seeing the wild life. It is just a great place to come and relax and enjoy being "unplugged". Campfires at night and sightseeing during the day. Also.... We have another house available for rent for an additional fee on the same property. You'll love it!
Lots of room for everyone. We had both cabins. Could have stayed right here and relaxed and fished but we made day trips to St George Island and Cape san blas. Great people to deal with. Was 8 of us and all had a great time. Everything was as expected. Clean is always first thing I check and it passed with flying colors. Hope to come back to Sopchoppy sometimes.
Lovely rickety, crickety place with loads of character and surprisingly spacious. We enjoyed the tranquillity of the place, and time spent on the dock, especially early mornings. The peace settles in your bones.
The price is very reasonable, but don't forget to add the hefty cleaning fee: £125 We are 2 seniors, staying 4 nights and it only needed bed linen and towel changes and floor sweeping plus mopping of bathroom and kitchen area. So $125 seemed extortionate. We stayed 10 places around Florida on our travels and the other cleaning costs went from $0 (7 places) to $90. HOWEVER, as long as you include it in with the daily rental costs, then you could still find the total price is reasonable.
We'd hoped for local hikes, but could only find walks along the sandy track-roads by all the cabins. Not the most inspiring so we travelled by car. Be prepared to drive (for us Brits) long distances, eg Sopchoppy is about 20 miles. The local store there is fantastic in itself.... like a museum, and rather well stocked.... we certainly found a corkscrew there (thank goodness! and don't worry, we left it at the cabin!) Nearby is Ochlockonee State Park... where we both remarked on how still and quiet it all was.... and seeing the white squirrels! Further afield we recommend Leon Sinks and awesome Wakulla Springs where there's a worthwhile boat trip on the river. The beauty here is the clear water, and you can safely swim, knowing that within a couple of hundred yards (are manatees swimming (even out of season in October) with their calves.
One great disappointment was although the cabin was superbly stocked with DVDs, we couldn't play them. There were 2 remotes, one had no batteries, the other was corroded batteries. Phoning the owner, she said that the previous visitors had also been unable to get the system to work, but they should work so off we went to the local shop (20 miles each way don't forget!!) to buy new batteries. Still no joy. We got the video working but couldn't get the TV to go onto the right band/channel for the DVD player. Rang owner again.... and she told me how to press different buttons (on the TV itself) together to try and get the system working. Another hour later we gave up again. Very frustrating, especially as the previous visitors had reported the issue, but the owner just thought that 'maybe the other people didn't know how to use the TV'. However she promised that (after we'd left) she would be visiting to sort it out.
We had both cabins for a few days. It was 8 of us. We most likely could have got by with just the main house. I stayed in the back cabin and loved it. The bed was very comfortable. I loved the screened in porch with river view in the main house..and would have loved the tin roof :) Nice fishing dock with lights. Sleeping arrangements was set up good for extended family.Very clean and comfortable. We look forward to visiting again.
This cabin is in a remote area that allows you to have no worries about the world you are leaving for vacation. You can be at a beach in 45 minutes for ocean fun or saltwater fishing, or you can stay at the house for fishing in the river. No much to do but enjoy the outdoors. It is an older cabin, but it gets the job done.
Had a group of 7 and we couldn't have been more pleased. My only hesitation on putting 5 stars was not wanting everyone else to love it so I can book it again!
Had a wonderful stay at the River House. Very roomy and accommodating for our large crowd of 10. Beds were comfortable and kitchen was nicely stocked. Fishing wasn't great during our stay, but that didn't matter; there's just something therapeutic about sitting on the dock and watching the line bob in the water! Definitely the place to stay if you need to get away from it all and unwind for a while.
