We love Okarito and love to share this special place with visitors. We are the happy owners/operators of Okarito Boat EcoTours. We hope you can join us and explore this very special place with us on the water - the tidal estuary is renowned for its stunning natural beauty and birdlife. We manage two holiday homes here in Okarito, as well as manage the Okarito Native Plants Nursery. When winter rolls around, we head to Canada where we run self-guided cycle tours on a rail trail in British Columbia!

Excellent accommodation, great fire place
Thank you Alice - so pleased you enjoyed your stay in the little cottage!
Cozy and clean with a lovely charm
Everything went smoothly and straight forward. We loved how eco conscious the owners obviously are!
Thank you Maggie for your review which is for 31 Wharf Street - just to clarify she got a little "upgrade" so it's not confusing for future renters. 31 Wharf Street is Okarito Wharf Cottage and was more suitable for her stay so we gave her the upgrade. And yes, we appreciate the recognition for being careful with how we live - we live in a beautiful place and hope to inspire others. Thank you Maggie for coming to stay!
Cute kiwi bach with everything you need.Cosy living room with a fireplace, close to lot of amazing places, close to beach and even a coffee shop?I believe :) Few of us stayed there over one night and we really enjoyed it.
Thank you so much Kristina for your comments and so pleased you all enjoyed your stay in the little bach!
all the best, Paula
Cosy step back in time. Lovely little authentic bach. Basic and no fuss but everything you need.
Really lovely hosts had the heater on for us. Loved the fabulous open fireplace for those days where it was wet outside. Genuine period bach; unpretentious and very relaxing. Has everything you need. We are really glad we stayed in Okarito rather than Franz as when the wet weather meant our flights to the glacier were cancelled we had our own wee house and lots to do outside on the beach (rock hunting, seal spotting...) bird watching tours and bush-walks. The shower pressure is a bit sad but fine for a couple of days stay and the beds were uber comfortable with lovely bed-linen which meant super comfortable sleep. Loved it.
Thank you Nicolette for your review for the little bach! so pleased you enjoyed your time here, and the morning lagoon tour of course too. Definitely true about the shower pressure...sorry! but pleased you had comfy cosy sleeps - they are the best and it helps its so quiet around here at night too.
Sounds like you had a great time exploring - always love it when people get out on the beach, the lagoon and in the bush - all part of being here in Okarito, all the best, Paula
Useable cottage, a bit dated.
The cottage is quite a throwback into the last century, think sixties, it could use a good make over . The layout is quirky, but if you look past that, it is an ok place to hang your hat. The bed and bedding is comfortable, there is a CD player, assorted books, large fridge, several sinks and an assortment of kitchen utensils, plates, glasses etc. The beach is 2 minutes away, you can hear the waveaction. Some windows have screens, so you can open some of them. It's a quite quiet location.
HI Jakoba - Kiwi Cottage exactly - and was one of the first "baches" in Okarito. Definitely a throwback! and quirky indeed - a lot of Kiwi's enjoy the "flashbacks" to holidays they remember growing up - a simple place for simpler times....maybe not so familiar to our overseas travelers! Do hope you enjoyed exploring the area and sounds like you enjoyed the beach - safe and enjoyable travels to you in your discoveries around NZ!
Awful stay The place stinks of tobacco and very musty
My husband and I booked for a two nights stay, but packed up and left after the first night. Couldn’t bear to stay a second night there.
It is basic as described, which I was quite happy about. I wanted to experience a simple kiwi Bach pad. Brooms and mops greet you ar the entrance. The front door is so dirty we were hesitant to open the door afraid how it might be inside. Once inside itt was another level of disgust. The place was smelling of tobacco smoke and musty. Although the windows were left opened, it hadn’t helped. I am very sensitive to smells and this triggered a fit of coughing sneezing which went on for a few days after. There were a lot of allergens in the air.
We were hesitant to touch anything. It felt very unclean.
We’ve been travelling in the South zisland, NZ for over two weeks and have been staying in a combination of air bnb, home away accommodations. I had an expectation of the standard for the amount I paid for this.
I notified the host and she put it down to hay fever, which I do not accept as that was not the case. Referred to many positive feedback received in the past. However, this is my experience!!
Overall, it was very unpleasant and a depressing stay.
We had quite a number of emails from this guest who notified us late in the day after leaving. There has never, ever been smoking allowed in the cottage but it does have an open fireplace that has been happily used over many years which I suggested may have triggered her response. We are located just two minutes walk from the cottage and would happily have placed these guests elsewhere immediately but were unable to do so as they did not notify us of the allergy until the following evening (after leaving). For anyone who is experiencing an allergic reaction we would expect to be notified immediately rather than having to spend an uncomfortable night - wish we could have been given the opportunity to do so. This is an older cottage and some may find it has an older musty aroma, or if the fireplace has been used the smell of woodsmoke.., there are screened windows and a fan - most people find it as described.
Okarito is off the beaten track but not far from the hustle of Franz Josef Glacier and the moutain attractions (25 minute drive). But take the time to explore Okarito! we offer discounts to our guests when joining us on an Ecotour of the Okarito wetlands and waterways - birdlife here is abundant and on a clear day we will see the Southern Alps towering over the Okarito lagoon - renowned for its untouched biodiversity. Explore the rainforest with beautiful tracks or take a longer walk to the famous 3 Mile Lagoon - watch for seals, whales and Hector's dolpins know to frequent this area. Okarito is a special place, mostly untouched by time - if you like getting away from it all - this is your place too!
