Also check out our neighbor on VRBO listing #474399. This will give you the advantage of two (2) houses for larger vacation groups.
Ron & Dana are from NJ and originally came to this area to rock climb, hike and enjoy nature. We hope you will enjoy the same and utilize the house.
Dana Roussell purchased this house in 2005
The Mountain House is so close to so many areas. Skiing at Belleayre & Hunter in the winter. Rock Climbing at the Gunks. Swimming holes and waterfalls are at your fingertips!
State land areas: Sundown Forest, Minnewaska Park, Mohonk Preserve and Peekamoose Mountain are all close by.
Hiking & biking and motorcycle exploring everywhere. Horseback riding is right down the road.
Have fun picking apples from the farm around the corner every fall.
Close by is a venician well with fresh spring water. Delicious!!
You will love to watch the leaves change in autumn.
The deer, turkeys, many varieties of birds including hummingbirds can be seen right at the house. Although we rarely see the bear, he is around the area.
Don't forget to explore the old foundation homestead in the state land attached right to our back yard.
There is something here for everyone!!
My wife and I, along with our two dogs, spent the week between Christmas and New Year's Day in this wonderful house. The place is furnished like a home, with all the appropriate furniture and artwork to make it feel like someone really lives there! The kitchen is well appointed with everything you need for cooking and eating. The bedrooms are comfortable and the master even has a Sleep Number adjustable mattress (which is something we'd never tried before!). We spent a lot of time lounging on the two recliner sofas just enjoying the view out to the mountains across the valley while the fire kept us comfortably warm. The floors are hardwood and very easy to maintain and the house is easy to secure and solidly built. The house is very secluded and yet access is relatively easy.
Despite having about 6 inches of snow from a previous storm, we managed to get out and about on several walks in the forest in front of the property and even found what appeared to be some old stone ruins down by a creek which was quite fascinating.
We managed a separate trip around the area each day except for one when it snowed all day. There are gorgeous lakes and small towns in abundance and the roads are generally good all around. My favorite drive was up along Peekamoose road through the same named valley (what's not to love about a place called Peekamoose!?). Stunning scenery!
Even in winter there are several diners open and there seems to be at least one in each town. These make for easy meals and good casual conversation with folks. There are convenience shops at gas stations in nearby Kerhonkson and there's a good sized supermarket at the Wallmart in nearby Ellensville if you need to do a full shop.
The owners checked in with us by email before we left to come to the house and then called as soon as we arrived. They were available by phone easily if needed and are very friendly and eager to assist. There's a detailed guidebook in the house with suggestions for nearby sightseeing and local restaurants as well.
We've been staying at various vacation rentals in a number of different locations throughout the USA for over fifteen years and we both felt when we left that this had been the best experience yet. We were so relaxed when we headed home (but so sad to be leaving!). We're already hoping to get another week here sometime soon if our work schedules will permit.
We can heartily recommend this lovely house for a great break!
The house is beautiful, spacious, has a lot of light. Everything was clean, new, and worked well.
House itself is located at the end of a small private street, is hidden by the trees, but has a large cleared lot and a large deck, so you really get to experience the beautiful fall, or do some star gazing, or just let your kids run around.
The area is great, Minnewaska state park is very close, New Paltz is also close, a lot of family-friendly farms and wineries nearby.
Dana is a great host, will definitely recommend this place to friends and would stay there again!
My friends and I had a wonderful weekend! We took a hike at Stoney Kill. What a great hike! I loved driving around seeing the fall foliage. It was great to catch up with old friends in this lovely home. Home was fully stocked for all of our needs.
Four of us friends came up for harvest weekend. The house was not completely secluded, but completely private.
Nice deck in the back where we had coffee in the morning. Inside of the house was clean and properly furnished. Bedrooms
and bathrooms were great as well. I would recommend this property for romantic getaway, weekend with friends, adventure weekend, and more.
This place is so nice and refreshing, such a change from the city or shore. I went there with my son he's 5 and had a blast, there's lots of trails to walk on in the huge yard and there's State Reserve Land right next to the property with lots of other Trails my, son even found his first frog haha. The house is really nice and comfortable with a beautiful view of the night sky I brought a telescope and we looked at the moon and stars. There's waterfalls and hiking trails all in the area also, we went to saunterkill farm which is close and got done treats, and went to a super nice swimming hole in the mountains called Blue Hole which was amazing, we went to a waterfall called Vernoy Kill which has awesome trails and went to the world largest kaleidoscope. We had a good time and plan to visit again, I know for the winter there is 3 different ski resorts close by. Looking forward to checking some out.
We had a fantastic time! Your place is a wonderful mountain hide-away. We found it so relaxing and enriching to just lounge around the house or get in the car and see where the road took us......everywhere we drove was charming. The Egg's Nest is an awesome restaurant in High Falls but sadly after 40+ years it is closing at the end of the month. We also drove to Woodstock only to find that the first "Woodstock" was actually held in Bethel, NY. So, the next day we drove to Bethel & it was worth the drive. We also went out to hear music at the Rosendale Café which was really fun & their food was delicious too. We could just have easily hung out at home the whole 3 days......very peaceful. Dana was a great host.....responding to all my questions very rapidly. Thank you!
Our house has 5 acres with established trails. Our property is bordered by a Forever Wild Preserve. Check out the rock walls and and stone hearth from and old homestead.
Vernooy Kill is a must see 2 mile hike to a three tiered waterfall and swimming hole.
Stoney Kill is a spectacular 80' waterfall with a horseshoe shape. Bring your lunch and eat behind the falls. An easy hike to the base or for the more adventurous you can also hike to the top. Follow the trail to a local swimming hole. Watch out for nude bathers.
Go to the Mohonk House and do the Lemon squeeze trail it's awesome! There is a parking and entry fee.
We bought our property for the beautiful area and the close proximity to the Shawangunk "Gunks" Mountains, a rock climbers dream. Always a must see is Minnawaska Lake, the ice caves at Sam's Point and the Eagles at Ashokan Reservoir, all close by.
Stop by Saunterkill farms for fresh produce and baked goods. They are a little pricey, but worth it!
Pick apples at the farm around the corner in the fall. Relax and enjoy!
