About Ellen and Mike Tomy

Mike Tomy is an award winning architect and Ellen painted portraits for 15 years and now paints miniatures. They are both retired and recently renovated the main house and the carriage house that sits near.

Ellen and Mike Tomy purchased this cottage in 2012

Why Ellen and Mike Tomy chose Historic District

The carriage house has wonderful views of historic homes. The trees somewhat block the view of the water, but it is just a block away. Park the car and walk to museums, restaurants, shops, marina and art galleries. Or take a horse drawn carriage ride along the streets of Beautiful historic district. Go for a drive to Hunting beach and climb the lighthouse. Stop in the colorful shops and road side vegetable stands along the way.

What makes this cottage unique

The Carriage House on Craven, central to all that is happening in Beaufort has a separate unit downstairs (property 742825) if one has a large party and all want to stay in one place.

During the many yearly festivals parking is not easy to find in town. Just stay at the carriage house, leave the car and the festivals are a block away. Meander through one-of-a-kind shops on Bay Street and enjoy fabulous seafood in Beaufort's unique restaurants. If you don't want to eat out, a fully equipped kitchen is ready for you.

Relaxing Stay Downtown

  • 5 of 5

This property is perfect! It was absolutely what I needed for my stay, a nice quiet place. The inside is beautifully decorated. Everything was comfortable, it was like home. In fact I wouldn't mind just living there! Beaufort is not new to me as I have lived there for the last 25 years only having recently moved away. I had to come for a short business trip and needed a quiet place and this was perfect. The kitchen is well stocked, I just didn't feel like cooking. I was able to drive to Starbucks for a chai latte in the morning although the coffee shop downtown is in walking distance and they make their chai homemade. There are so many wonderful restaurants within walking distance also. The ease in which to visit the downtown is great, you don't have to pay additional parking fees as you just walk a couple of blocks to get there. This would be a great place for anyone to stay whether to see your loved one graduate or a romantic weekend. Thanks so much Mr and Mrs. Tomy for having such a beautiful place and being so accommodating on letting me sneak in a little early! I appreciated your beautiful home! I will certainly look to see if it is available the next time I am in town! Coming home is always a wonderful thing, leaving is always hard. I will certainly be recommending The Craven house Carriage home to my friends!

Honest review of the good and bad

  • 3 of 5

Plus:They have done a nice job with the property and it is in a great location.

Minus: Uncomfortable living.room seating, no closet or place to hang or put away clothes in one bedroom. Insistence you remove all facial make up to prevent stains (we suggest Oxy Clean) Stone driveway difficult for walking on heels (like everyone in town that weekend, we were there for a military ceremony). No smoking anywhere outside on premises announced only after arrival (ignored by unknowing family member).. Unreasonably high clean up cost.

Owner's Response: I am terribly sorry this guest didn’t enjoy their stay. Local hotels are more expensive, but may be a better fit for these guests than an historic home, especially being smokers. Certain things are expected in an historic home. A rock driveway is congruent with an historic property and our sensitive ecology for water runoff. Our historic property has antique furniture, as expected, and is pictured in our ad. We have put photos of all the rooms so one can clearly see what is in them. Also in all capital letters on the description in our ad is the information about no smoking anywhere on the property. It is stated again in our instruction sheet in the unit. This guest clearly did not read the ad before booking. We provide well kept, high end linens, therefore we have simply requested ladies kindly not use wash rags for makeup removal. We even provide make up removal pads at no charge. Our cleaning fee, also disclosed in our ad, is one of the lower among vacation rentals in our area. Our advertising specifically says what is to be expected; all one has to do is read it.

Wonderful Experience

  • 5 of 5

We recently rented the upper and lower accommodations for our son’s graduation from the Marine Corp. The apartments are wonderful and completely met our needs. The quality of the renovations are excellent, thorough and very well done. Beautiful decor throughout - very warm, antiques and great linens. Honestly felt like home. Great beds and shower. The owners are lovely, helpful and friendly and there is parking onsite. The location is perfect - across the street from the bay and walking distance to shopping, restaurants, etc. Would not hesitate to stay here again!

very quaint and quiet

  • 4 of 5

Really a good stay overall. I just have 3 suggestions-tea pot for those who like tea instead of coffee-the pot under the stove burns more gas and takes longer-filter curtains on french door for the first bedroom for a bit of privacy from the livingroom-and black out curtains or black out film for the bedroom windows as the sheers on the windows and that roll down shade just don't do a thing for the light coming in at night. Great space-really enjoyed it and a much better value than any hotel!
