Why Bo Ballance chose Savannah

The benevolence of a prestigious gentlemen, Mr. Percival (Percy) Randolph Cohen, provided the financial opportunity to construct the beautiful building which carries his name. Mr. Cohen was born on November 8, 1851 and lived his life in Savannah, Georgia. He served as the CEO of Savannah Compress Company. Upon his passing on April 21, 1927, his entire fortune was dispersed amongst three worthy causes: notably the Fresh Air Home on Tybee Island, Bethesda Home for Boys and funding for the construction of Cohen's Retreat.

In his will, Mr. Percy bequeathed $50,000 to construct a facility "where men would not die old and lonely".

And so it began...

On December 23, 1933, the architectural plan for Levy & Clarke was approved for Cohen's Retreat. A few months later, on March 18, 1934, the cornerstone was laid at 5715 Skidaway Road. The contents inside of this cornerstone were two pennies with Mr. Cohen's birth and death year, corn and a bottle of wine. On Christmas Eve in 1934, the Cohen's Retreat Dedication Ceremony was held and attended by Rabbi Max, Mayor Gamble and Judge A.B. Lovell.

For over 50 years, the building served as a facility for aging men and was named "Cohen's Old Man's Retreat". While it is true, Mr. Cohen's financial generosity provided funding for the building, it was his gift of compassion and care for others which continue to touch our hearts today. There is no greater gift than the gift of giving back to others, as validated by Mr. Cohen's portrait hanging above our mantle, in the very spot it hung so many years ago.

Fast forward to a new millennium, where the names and faces have changed but the fundamental concept remains the same.

Colleen Smith agrees the opportunity to resurrect a Savannah landmark while creating an environment as colorful and quirky as the gentlemen who once resided here has truly been a remarkable journey.

When you bring creative souls together in an eclectic atmosphere, something magical is revealed.

Wonderful home away from home.

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful home away from home for me. I work abroad and enjoyed so much being in a residential area with such a creative flair. Everything I needed was there and anytime I had any questions or issues, they were met immediately. The cottage was the perfect size with very nice touches. I Will be back for my next holiday. Thank you so much.

Very happy with our month stay

  • 4 of 5

We stayed here last year and I forgot to review but really was not too happy with the cleanliness (dog hair) on everything in cottage 7. We had to rip everything apart...also dogs off leashes and no one curbing their dogs...we gave it another chance and this time was much different so I think things have changed for the better....This time we stayed in cottage 9 and it was very clean. The decor in both is awesome if you like a mix of new and vintage and this bed was super comfy too. Last time we had many more amenities as far as dishes and bowls and hangers and cleaning supplies, this time around it was not as well stocked since we made a lot of meals there but we know how to improvise and had brought a lot of things for a permanent move down here... The grounds are lovely to walk the shops are super nice and we went to dinner one night and had dessert the next and it was really spectacular! We got the dessert to go and since we were staying at the cottages we got a discount.!we did not get a discount with our dinner night...Special shout out to Louis who is an amazing person! There is live music and happenings at the retreat it would be great when u stayed that they let you know what is going on like a little calendar of events if Louis did not tell us there was live music and snacks we would have never known...Shout out to Brandy too she is very quick to respond to any issue and both times on arrival we we greeted with a handwritten note and a bottle of wine. I have recommended the cottages and dining to many people and hope they will go forward and continue to provide clean and friendly service in the front of the house as well as the back! Thanks again!

Away from the crowds

  • 3 of 5

Cohen's Retreat is just that - a retreat away from the historic district in a tranquil residential neighborhood. But you are still no more than a short drive from all the wonders of Savannah. Being so close to the Truman Parkway puts downtown Savannah within a 10-minute drive. I clocked it. And easy access to Oglethorpe Mall, Sandfly Barbecue, and all the shops in Sandfly, was a definite plus. The restaurant on the property is great for lunch or dinner.

The cottage itself is beautifully decorated and has most of what one would need for a nice vacation. Providing enough linens would be a nice addition to the cottage. And the Retreat is pet friendly which is not easy to find downtown. There is no rule however that dogs have to be leashed or that pet owners need to clean up after their dogs. That's a negative.

Brandy, the property manager, was easy to reach to resolve any issues and quite pleasant. Would definitely stay there again.

Perfect cottage

  • 5 of 5

This cottage at Cohen's was perfect for a weekend getaway with my fiancé. The cottage was very clean and in a perfect location to spend time downtown as well as away from the city.
