Bert Rakestraw purchased this barn in 2000
The incredible expanse of the Gila National Forest and the four gentle seasons here makes for a wonderful quality of living.
New Mexico is an earthy experience . . . Eagle Peak Lodging embodies all of the kick back earthy qualities from the adobe block that was used to build the barn to the riding arena and garden area. Just hike or ride out the gate into millions of acres of adventure.
Very cozy and serene mountain cabin. Mr. Rakestraw was extremely courteous and accommodating. We will definitely be booking this cabin again next year if we draw the same hunt.
We had the best time at Reserve. The place was just great .we would recommend it to anyone Bret is a great person
Very clean and comfortable. Bert the owner was very hospitable and willing to accommodate. Would highly recommend.
Bert (the owner) is a warm, humble sort of guy, very open and friendly in a simple kind of way, easy and enjoyable to chat with. The place is located on a small working ranch where you will see him tending to his cows and horses. There is a horse corral area near the adobe apartment where he saddles up and practices roping. The adobe apartment is part of a storage barn that has been converted. Very small, tight and basic place, but a nice bathroom with an old west galvanized steel washbasin as the sink (has hot/cold taps). Nice shower. A National Forest road goes right by his property up to Eagle Peak-- great access to the back-country which is quite beautiful around there. If you like target shooting, there is a designated shooting range in the National Forest at the end of his property about a quarter mile away from the apartment.
This is a very small, cozy studio room in a well-built adobe structure on 30+ quiet acres, in the Gila wilderness. Clearly well cared for. The host, Bert Rakestraw, is lovely - kind, thoughtful, attentive. The space is small, with a microwave, grill, and double burner hotplate, but no stove. Markets and restaurants are five minutes away. The space was immaculate and well-cared for. The isolation of the location means it will probably appeal most to hikers and hunters. The stars at night were brilliant, and the stillness was restorative.
My wife and I went to stay in this cute and rustic New Mexico getaway in the Gila wilderness and what a wonderful experience it was. Bert the owner is very friendly and pleasant and will show you around his place but will give you your privacy. Be prepared to bring everything you'll need as far as food because there's not much of a choice of anything in the town of Reserve, which is about 3 miles away. Other than that the little Adobe casita has everything and is self sustained just like it is described in the posting. My wife and I look forward to returning and would recommend it highly.
There are numerous ancient Indian ruins and petroglyphs to experience in the area along with tons of wilderness and wildlife adventures to have. Your host will even show you to some really cool places hiking or horseback!
The lodging is an apartment located in an adobe barn. There is also lodging available for your horses!
