Very small but nice little place if on a budget

  • 3 of 5

Bert (the owner) is a warm, humble sort of guy, very open and friendly in a simple kind of way, easy and enjoyable to chat with. The place is located on a small working ranch where you will see him tending to his cows and horses. There is a horse corral area near the adobe apartment where he saddles up and practices roping. The adobe apartment is part of a storage barn that has been converted. Very small, tight and basic place, but a nice bathroom with an old west galvanized steel washbasin as the sink (has hot/cold taps). Nice shower. A National Forest road goes right by his property up to Eagle Peak-- great access to the back-country which is quite beautiful around there. If you like target shooting, there is a designated shooting range in the National Forest at the end of his property about a quarter mile away from the apartment.

Off the beaten track hide-away

  • 4 of 5

This is a very small, cozy studio room in a well-built adobe structure on 30+ quiet acres, in the Gila wilderness. Clearly well cared for. The host, Bert Rakestraw, is lovely - kind, thoughtful, attentive. The space is small, with a microwave, grill, and double burner hotplate, but no stove. Markets and restaurants are five minutes away. The space was immaculate and well-cared for. The isolation of the location means it will probably appeal most to hikers and hunters. The stars at night were brilliant, and the stillness was restorative.

Awesome rustic and detached from the outside world experience!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I went to stay in this cute and rustic New Mexico getaway in the Gila wilderness and what a wonderful experience it was. Bert the owner is very friendly and pleasant and will show you around his place but will give you your privacy. Be prepared to bring everything you'll need as far as food because there's not much of a choice of anything in the town of Reserve, which is about 3 miles away. Other than that the little Adobe casita has everything and is self sustained just like it is described in the posting. My wife and I look forward to returning and would recommend it highly.

Very basic, pleasant, rustic unit with a very nice host - Bert

  • 4 of 5

We just spent one evening and morning in this VRBO on our way back to Albuquerque after a brief trip to southern New Mexico. It is a very basic, very rustic one room cabin with a separate bathroom and laundry. There is also a kind of entryway/storage area between the bathroom and the main living area. The living area has two, very soft single beds that could be moved together. There is also a table and four chairs. The unit has a hot plate, large refrigerator and small microwave. There is no internet or TV in the unit. I have Verizon and I could not get a signal either at the VRBO or while in the nearby town of Reserve.

The VRBO is located out in the country, just outside of Reserve, New Mexico. Reserve is the nearest and largest town, but it only has 300 or so people living there. There are a couple of bars and restaurants in Reserve, which are within about three miles of the VRBO. The VRBO owner, Bert, lives in a home very near, but not connected to the VRBO. Bert is very nice and met us when we arrived. He built not only his lovely home, but also this VRBO unit as well. He introduced us to his three horses and to his dog Tidbit. There are also some cattle nearby. Our dog was with us and he really seemed to enjoy himself. This was his first experience “meeting” horses and cattle.

As long as you have the correct expectations (basic, rustic, one room unit with no Internet or TV), we think you will enjoy staying here. It is extremely quiet and dark in the evening. It's a beautiful place to see the evening sky and to listen to the natural sounds of the wild. There is even the chance of some elk making an evening or morning appearance, though we did not see any during our stay.

Tranquil Casita snuggled between the Apache and Gila National Forests

  • 5 of 5

This is a gem of a find situated a few miles outside of the Village of Reserve, NM. The casita, or barn as our terrific host Bert prefers to call it, looks out over a tree laced pasture with a mountain range in the distance. Bert, of course, is very knowledgeable about the area and helpful in planning your stay in the area. We spent two relaxing days and comfortable nights on the property. The casita is well appointed and more than met our needs. One could not ask for better neighbors - Bert's horses, cows and the resident herd of elk. The Village of Reserve is small and charming - however, bring your groceries with you as the nearest well stocked store is miles away. We visited during the month of February - intent on escaping the snow in Colorado. The days were warm, the roads dry and very conducive to riding our sport motorcycles. The snow did prevent us from getting through some of the mountain passes - but the views on the trip back down were as spectacular as they were going up. We will be back!
